I recently heard an amazing rendition of Amazing Grace sung by one of my favorite groups (Celtic Men). It was as good as I’ve ever heard, but I couldn’t help but wonder where they stand with the Lord. Anyone can sing Amazing Grace and just about everyone in our part of the world has– even many who give no evidence of being a Christian. But until a person has actually accepted God’s grace through Christ he cannot fully appreciate it.
God’s grace is beyond our ability to comprehend, more marvelous than the mind can imagine, more amazing than words can describe, and available to whosoever will receive it. It is, well, “amazing”–what more can I say? But there is something else that is truly amazing, yet seldom discussed. It is amazing that anyone would refuse, set aside, nullify the grace of God! How they could possibly turn their back on the most precious thing in the world is beyond me.
To reject God’s grace is not only shocking it is sinful. It is amazing and awful! It is to treat the blood of Christ as a worthless thing. It is an insult to and rebellion against God. God has extended His grace to all and has “commanded all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). Consequently every person who despises His grace, dishonors His Son, and disobeys His command is a rebel against God. Even if you did your best to keep the moral law, stayed busy doing good deeds, and gave every penny to charity, your rejection of Christ proves you are a sinner. Refusing His grace is worse than anything else you could have done. That is the very sin that condemns you to a lake of fire for eternity.
Not only is this sinful, it is stupid– the dumbest thing you could ever do! What could be more foolish than to reject God’s forgiveness, refuse God’s gift of eternal life, resent the grace of God, rebel against the command of God, resist the Spirit of God, and remain in your lost estate? Why would you do that? God’s grace is freely bestowed upon all who believe. It is there for the taking. Don’t refuse it. His grace will meet your deepest need, bring your greatest joy, provide perfect peace and bring about a glorious transformation. To refuse amazing grace is amazing! Think about it!
