GRATEFUL FOR GRACE

November 21, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;”–1 Cor. 1:4

For the Christian, grace is something we simply can’t get enough of. The more we hear about it the more we want to hear. We can’t think of God without thinking of grace. If I want to speak of God’s beauty I use the word “holy”. If I speak of God’s banner I use the word “love”. If I want to speak of God’s benevolence I can use the word “mercy”. But if I want to speak of God’s blessings I use the word “grace”. In describing God’s attributes, what He is, many words might be employed. But when describing God’s actions man-ward there is no word better than “grace”. If there is any one word that captures the essence of God as related to man it is “grace”.

Since we cannot fully fathom the depths of our depravity, nor the height of God’s holiness, we cannot grasp the greatness of His grace. It is more than tongue or pen can ever tell, even beyond what the mind can imagine. When the greatest preachers have exhausted their supply of sermons, and the most gifted song writers have done their best, and the grandest poets have finished their efforts to describe “grace”, the half has not yet been told! God’s grace is amazing, available, adequate, and abundant– and it should be appreciated!
Grace without gratitude is like the sun without heat, or the ocean without water, or honey without sweetness— it just doesn’t make sense. Certainly no heart quickened by the Holy Spirit could ever be anything but grateful for grace. Realizing that all I am and all I have is due to the grace of God I should be thankful for everything and complain about nothing. His grace has given me what I need rather than what I deserve, and I could never understand it apart from what God has revealed. Eph. 1:6,12,14 tells me it is for–“His glory”. I have read thousands of sermons, definitions, examples, and illustrations regarding grace, but I am as a baby trying to understand Einstein’s Theory of Relativity when I try to comprehend grace. It is beyond me. All I can say is that God’s grace is given for my good and His glory, and I am grateful!
