Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you-—John 12:35
Darkness can sometimes be delightful. The work is over, the family is gathered, and it’s time to rest and recover. Times like that are of greater value than gold. But, darkness can also be dreadful, and that’s what our Lord refers to here. He warns us–“lest darkness come upon you”. It is a picture of being overtaken–such as a beast that would spring upon you and devour you. There is a darkness that likewise robs you of life itself.
In this simple, yet serious, statement we find a lesson for all. Regardless of what stage or season of life we find ourselves in, duty calls, and we are to capitalize on the golden opportunities set before us before it is too late.
For those who are young, this is the time for education, preparation, and the formation of relationships–some of which will last a lifetime. Do not believe the lie that says you will always have tomorrow. Today is your day, perhaps your last day. Waste not your opportunities!
For those in their prime, you’ve heard the old saying, “Strike while the iron is hot”–well, now is the time! Your mind is sharp, your body is strong, and your eyes are keen, but the night cometh. Use it or lose it.
For those who have reached old age. The sun might be setting, but the day isn’t over—yet. Don’t be reduced to the status of a “Has-been”. The very fact that you are still here tells you that the sun hasn’t set–there is still a work for you to do.
Whatever your age, the watchword is “Now!”. Today is the time. The clock is ticking. The sun is setting and darkness is coming–“Walk”! Despise no duty. Waste no time. Ignore no opportunity. As someone said:
“Never comes the opportunity that passed;
That one moment–was its last”
