Just as God sustained ancient Israel in the wilderness with manna from heaven, He provides exactly what we need in this wicked world by way of the Bible. But, as the Israelites had to gather the manna for themselves we must feed upon the Word He has provided. It is not forced on us.
If we are to find strength for the day feeding on scripture is essential. That’s why Job said,” I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.”(Job 23:12).
Anyone who understands the perfection and power of the Bible feels the same way. Just as our body needs nourishment, so does our soul. Life is tough and we are weak. Without a daily dose of God’s word we will fail–no doubt about it! J. R. Miller was right when he wrote:
Nothing is more helpful and practical in Christian living—than the habit of getting a verse or phrase of Scripture into the mind and heart in the morning. Its influence stays
through the day, weaving itself into all the day’s thoughts and words and experiences.Every verse in the Bible is meant to help us to live.
