The mind is a strange thing. For example, regardless of how hard I try I have a hard time remembering certain things, yet without any effort there are some things I can’t seem to forget. I can remember certain sermons I preached 50 years ago and some articles I wrote years ago, yet sometimes I can’t remember what I ate yesterday. I was thinking about that this morning when I remembered an article I wrote over a year ago. It was called “The Saints by my Side”.
Here’s what triggered the recall. I had just started an article by writing these words – “We talk a lot about God taking care of us and well we should, but we seldom mention the means by which He does so. And in most cases God uses people to care for people”. That’s what took my mind back to thinking about the saints by my side. I can’t help but wonder where I would be or what I would do were it not for the help of others. I thank God for the caregivers! They don’t all work in the hospitals and nursing homes. They are liable to be found anywhere. But, sadly, they seldom get the attention they deserve.
Naturally my greatest helper in life has been and is my wife. She has enabled me to do the things God called me to do, and she is still by my side. Even after nearly 55 years in the ministry she is still there. I feel that I would have to resign as pastor if it wasn’t for her and for the best associate pastor anyone could ask for. Indeed God is caring for me, but He is using others. God has kept His promise to supply all my needs, but He has used others to do so. I have everything I need and more than I deserve, but the supply has come to me through the generous members of the church I pastor. I doubt that any pastor could be more proud of their church than I am of the folks at Lakeway. That’s why I say, Thank God for the caregivers! – HDS
