LOSING SIGHT OF YOUR PURPOSE
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” – Matt. 5:13
It’s amazing how easy it is for us to lose sight of our purpose and get off track. I thought about that after reading a story about a store owner in London, by the name of Sohan Singh, who was so disturbed by people’s bad manners that he actually banned customers from entering his store.
The story, reported in the “Flagstaff Live”, related that he first banned smoking, then crude language, baby strollers, pets, and finally customers. Now the shoppers have to peer through the window, spot the item they want, and ring a bell to signal that they want to make a purchase. The money and items are then exchanged through a small hatch in the door! Mr. Singh stated,”I have lost business, but I can’t say how much. I am a man of principles, and I stand by my decision”.
Well, that’s fine and dandy with me, it’s his store, but that doesn’t mean it’s smart. It appears to me that he has lost sight of his purpose. If you’re going to make a living selling groceries you have to put up with people– even when they do things you don’t like.
Now as silly as this is, I’m afraid that Christians and churches often are guilty of the same thing. They get so up-set with others that they shut-out the very people they should be reaching for Christ. Or they get so distraught over the rotten condition of the world that they isolate themselves from it to the point that they have no influence in it. They become like the salt that has lost its savor–good for nothing.
