MORNING MANNA           10/29/20

October 29, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16

“We love him, because he first loved us.“- 1 John 4:19

“Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”- 1 John 4:11

“God so loved the world” – that we know. What we don’t know is the “breadth, the length, the depth, and height” (Eph. 3:18) of His love. There is no way to measure God’s love toward us. Neither is there any way we can love Him as much He deserves. But we could love Him more.

Charles Spurgeon said, “I feel that, if I could live a thousand lives, I would like to live them all for Christ; and I should even then feel that they were all too little a return for His great love to me!” How could any blood bought believer not feel the same? Seeing this is the first and great commandment ( Matt. 22:37-38) and that we are helpless by nature, how can we possibly love God? We can’t merely force ourselves to do so. Neither can we be forced. As J. C. Philpot said, “We are not flogged into loving Him, but are drawn by love into love”. Indeed we are! We love Him because He first loved us. How do we know? Just look to Jesus! See Him there upon the cross for our sins and see Him raised again for our justification. That’s love!

There should be no question about God’s love. The only question has to do with our love for Him. Where is the evidence? Octavius Winslow said, “it is utterly impossible to know Christ, and not become inspired with a desire to love Him supremely, to serve Him devotedly, to resemble Him closely, to glorify Him faithfully here, and to enjoy Him fully hereafter!”

The degree of our love for Christ can be determined by the measure of our devotion to Him. that being the case you have to wonder if some people love Him at all. And especially when you consider that the first commandment is connected to the second – “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” ( Matt. 22:39). Not only do we love Him because He first loved us, we also love others as a result of loving Him. – HDS
