Many are miserable with their lives. There is a dark cloud of doom and gloom hovering over their head everywhere they go. And, as a general rule, they always find someone else to blame for their sadness. But, truth be known, their misery is the product of their own making. Their attitude and actions have been such as to make joy and peace impossible.

It would be a glad day if they woke up to the fact that they are responsible for their condition and took steps to correct it, but they don’t. They choose to live in disobedience to God, even though they despise the bitter dregs of such behavior. They allow their moments of sinful pleasure to rob them joy and peace. They speak of loving God, but refuse to live in obedience to Him. They either don’t know what true love is or don’t care that it is lacking. Our text sets the record straight – “this is love, that we walk after His commandments“.

Love for Christ is more than merely attending church occasionally, singing hymns, reading the Bible once in a while, and thanking God for our food. Love for God is manifested by obedience to God. It is a desire to please Him who is the object of our affection. It is the surrendering of ourselves to the One who sacrificed Himself for us. It is the giving of yourself to the One who gave all for you. Those who love God obey God! Do you? – HDS
