WHAT DO YOU KNOW?
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” – 1 John 5:13
Growing up in the Ozarks I’ve heard a lot of different greetings. As a boy we would say “What ya doing? or “How ya doin?” In high school the boys would say one to another, “What’s up cat?”. Another was “What’d ya know?” Of course no one expected a detailed account of the person’s knowledge. It was just a greeting, but “What do you know?” is actually a very good question.
You’ve heard people say “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.” Taken in a certain context that might be true, but taken literally it is ridiculous. What you don’t know can hurt you, it might kill you, and could cause you to end up in hell.
No one can be saved without knowing and trusting the gospel of Christ (Rom.10:14). There can be no saving faith where there is no knowledge of the truth. And a saving relationship goes beyond knowing about God – it is knowing God and being known of God, which happens when we trust Christ. So it’s not just a matter of “What do you know? It’s also “Who do you know?”
With this in mind, do you know Christ as your Lord and Savior? Do you know your sins have been forgiven? Do you know your home is in heaven? If you don’t you can – “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”I John 2;3. – HDS
