WHAT IS CHRISTIANITY WORTH TO US?
We must reflect on this question. It would behoove us to consider the reality of secret cave worship services Christians have gathered for so they could sing, pray, and preach the Word of God.
There was always a possibility of being captured and even killed for doing so, yet they continued to meet steadfastly because of the value of Christianity to them. Many have had their lives taken because of the truth they stood for. These are truths we are able to openly meet for and share today.
Truths such as :
– THE BIBLE IS THE FINAL AUTHORITY. We teach from it and the operating of the church is molded from it.
– THE CHURCH IS LOCAL AND INDEPENDENT of any power, authority, or persuasion of any outside organizations, people, or groups.
– THE CHRISTIAN HAS INDIVIDUAL ACCESS TO GOD through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
– THE BIBLE SPEAKS OF TWO OFFICES IN THE CHURCH, pastors and deacons.
– THE PRACTICE OF TWO ORDINANCES, baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
– LIVING A SET APART LIFE OF HOLINESS as a result of the great sacrifice Jesus Christ willingly made for us.
These are some truths which date back to the early church. Christians stood for these truths in the face of persecution, and many have died for them.
What a privilege it is to be a member of a church which still stands for these truths today. Our heritage should humble us. We must ponder how we are passing it along to future generations.
