THE SECRET TO SATISFACTION
” Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.“- Matt. 5:6
I don’t know about you but that word “filled” gets my attention – that’s to put it mildly. Actually it grabs me by the throat, shakes me, and shouts in my ear. I don’t want less than what God wants for me. Why would I?
I remember what happened when Israel “limited the Holy One” ( Psa. 78:41). So why should we short change ourselves when God wants the very best for His children? We don’t have to twist His arm to get what we need. All we need to do is to align our will with His and He fills us. Therefore, in that sense, we can get as close to God as we choose to be.
The problem is that most people are more concerned about happiness than they are about holiness – so they miss the blessing. They don’t realize that holiness leads to happiness. In other words, God actually wants for them what they want for themselves – He just expects them to find it in Him rather than where they are looking. Those who “hunger and thirst after righteousness” receive what the world can’t give or take away.
The word “filled” speaks of being satisfied – the state of wanting nothing more, content with what God gives. We seek and He satisfies. Therefore any lack of such as expressed in our text is due to a failure on our part, not God’s. When we want what He wants we get it! So actually there is no secret to satisfaction. Our Lord has already shown us the source – “hunger and thirst after righteousness“.
