OBSERVING OR OBEYING?
“Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you”– John 15:14
A life of godliness requires obedience. That’s why believers need to understand that they are in the school of Christ where they learn to live as they ought. In the school of Christ He is both the teacher and the subject. As Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls” (Matt. 11:29). His life is our textbook, therefore we should always be “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith”(Heb. 12:1). Becoming more like Christ should be the goal of every Christian. It’s good to learn about Him, but it’s better to live like Him.
The problem with most folks is, whether due to delights or difficulties, they are distracted from Him. When that happens they cease to grow. Their spiritual life is stunted, they are weakened, and in danger. Perhaps the best definition of a backslider is “when a person ceases to to ‘grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ’” (2 Pet.3:18).
It’s true that we shall never attain perfection in this life, but we should be progressing in that direction. Our prayer should be, as the old hymn says, – More about Jesus would I know, More of His grace to others show; More of His saving fullness see, More of His love who died for me”.
May God help us to remember, ”You are the only Bible some people will ever read”. Therefore we ought to live in such a way that others can see something of Jesus in us and be drawn to His saving grace. – HDS
