VICTORY IN JESUS
“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”- Rom. 8:37
I shouldn’t have to convince anyone that we need victory, but evidently some folks don’t see the need for it. Have you ever noticed the discrepancy between what the Bible says about Christians and what we see in their daily lives? We look at the Bible and see a picture of what we ought to be, but sadly that’s not what we always see. We often do not look anything like what the picture ought to be. It’s like the difference between a “glamour shot” and an actual photo. It is no wonder we often make a bad impression on others.
I want you to notice in vs. 35-36 the terrible things related to what Paul is talking about when he says “we are more than conquerors“. He speaks about tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, sword, and slaughter. Yet, he says “we are more than conquerors”. That phrase comes from just one Greek word that is used only once in the Bible. It means exactly what it says – to gain a surpassing victory. We don’t just barely conquer, we conquer in an overwhelming manner and by a wide margin!
Considering the fact that we were conquered, “taken captive” (2 Tim. 2:25), by the devil before we were converted this is glorious news! We are now victors rather than victims. We are free indeed and without excuse for our failures. We are not just conquerors, we are “more than conquerors”. As Christians we know that someday we’re going to eventually come out on top, but our text says “we are“, not “we are going to be”. In other words, we are able to win even while we are in this wicked world. Thank God for that!
Lastly I want you to notice how this is possible. Paul says it is “through him that loved us“. We are not victorious through our own personal efforts, but through Christ. He not only saves us from the penalty of sin He is saving us from the power of sin. Paul sums it up well in Phil. 4:13 where he says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”.
