If you are a Christian you have been blessed beyond measure. If God never did anything but save you, delivering you from wrath and accepting you into His family, you would have no cause for complaint. If you had no shoes for your feet, no food in the cupboard, no roof over your head, etc. you would still have reason to rejoice. Considering the greatness of God you have to wonder how anyone could lose the wonder, but they do. Why?
Christians usually start off rejoicing with great relief, high hopes, delightful dreams of the life to come. But over time, dealing with difficulties, troubled by trials, weary from work, etc. we get distracted from Christ. Suddenly the excitement escapes us and wonder wanes. We no long marvel at God’s mercy and glory in His grace. Our sights are on our sorrows, our focus is on our fears, our attention is on our afflictions. We cease looking unto Jesus as we’re told to do in Heb. 12:2.
Our beliefs remain in tact, our behavior is still good, our service doesn’t stop, but we grow weary in well doing and life becomes a burden rather than a blessing. So we drag on day after day – surviving, existing rather than really living. And if the problem isn’t recognized disaster awaits. If we don’t fall altogether we fail to live the abundant life God intended for us. If and when we come to our senses we come to God to be restored. It is a great day when we finally get honest about our condition and repent of our sin. We reach the place that we pray as David did, “Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation” ( Psa. 51:12). – HDS
