“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” – Psa. 119:18
It’s no wonder that I never grow weary of studying God’s Word. Just this morning I discovered something that I never saw before. It happens all the time. How any Christian could tire of studying the Bible is a mystery to me. Maybe it’s because they’ve never really tried it. They’ve heard sermons, read the Bible, checked out a few words in the dictionary, and made reference to a popular commentary, but they have never really studied the Bible.
Had they done so they would have made such wondrous discoveries that it would whet their appetite for more. In addition to that, it would have helped them in ways they never expected and enabled them to grow spiritually. I’ve often challenged people to study a portion of scripture as though they had to teach or preach it next Sunday. Do so anticipating questions that might be asked, for which you can answer. That will give you a new perspective on Bible study.
Bible study is hard work, but unlike when I started it is easier today than ever before. Today great Bible study aids are at your fingertips. When I started preaching we didn’t have computers or the internet. I spent countless hours in used book stores searching for good reference books. Then if I found one I had to hope that I could scrape up enough money to buy it. I hardly had enough money for gas to get there. And don’t get me started about the nonsense of not needing reference books. If the great preachers and scholars of yesteryear were alive today I would travel miles to hear them. So why would I refuse to read what they said? Take advantage of the great opportunities you have. It would be foolish to not avail yourself of the chance to learn all you can about the wonders of the Word.
All of us can think of someone we admire – someone who serves as an inspiration and example. So, what’s the difference between them and others – or you? There is a reason for them being such as they are and I can assure you that if they’re all you think they are it has to do with their attitude toward the Word of God. Every Christian has the potential for spiritual growth, but no Christian can grow if they neglect the Bible. While, by divine design, we are all different, we all serve the same God and have the same scriptures that can cause us to grow in the likeness of Christ. But it happens only for those who use them. So, again, I challenge you to get started studying God’s Word. -HDS
