While sitting at my desk preparing for a funeral service in a couple hours I received a phone call telling me that my best childhood friend had just died. I could literally write a book about our childhood experiences. Jerry was the person responsible for getting me into church, and I was saved a few weeks later. He was the best singer I’ve ever known and had as much natural talent as anyone I know. Over the years we drifted apart and our lives went in different directions.I could say so many things, but it would be meaningless to most of you.
All this just serves to remind me that life is short, our days are uncertain, and nothing is more important that serving God—that’s the only reason God leaves any of us on earth. If we are going to live only to please ourselves there is no reason for us to be here–heaven is much more pleasing!
In light of these facts we need to pay close attention to the words of Solomon, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do , do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”(Ecc. 9:10). So, what are you living for? Are you serving God with all your might? Think about it!—Time is short!
