Being hyper-sensitive to cold, I was shocked when I opened the door to my office this morning– it felt freezing! Yeah, I know it wasn’t really that bad, I’m just telling you how it felt to me. Just yesterday I had the a/c on and I had left the controls on that setting overnight, so no heat this morning. When the temp dropped into the thirties overnight the heater was off and the office was cold, and I’m uncomfortable. Having turned the heat on, I know it will be warm as toast in just a few minutes, but my mind is on now, and I’m cold and I don’t like it! Hopefully there’s a lesson in this.
In a speech before he became president, Lincoln said, “This too shall pass”. But that phrase originated long before he was born. It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: “And this, too, shall pass away.” How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!
Whatever uncomfortable situation you are in at the moment, know this–if you are a Christian things will get better. It’s just a matter of time! Don’t allow the difficulties of the day spoil your outlook on life and steal your joy– things will improve. For God’s children it’s always just a matter of time, because the best is yet to come. And it is my intention to never let you forget that!
Believe it or not, I’m getting warmer already. I’m almost in my comfort zone! I knew it would happen and it did. Now if I can just be that patient in all the other ares of my life–laboring on cheerfully, knowing that it’s just a matter of time until everything will be just right. Just knowing I would get warm made me more comfortable and just knowing the best is yet to come gives me “joy unspeakable and full of glory”( 1 Peter 1:8). Perhaps it will work for you also. Maybe you ought to spend some time today thinking about heaven (read 2 Cor. 5:16-18). It’s my guess that it will make you happy! Think about it! HDS
