Over the years, being the father of eight children I have had a lot of proud moments. One of the best happened just last week when I learned of an act of kindness by one of our children that thrilled my heart. I won’t mention who or what, but the act was extra-ordinary in my opinion. It was one of those WOW! moments that make you feel proud as a peacock. I wish I could tell the world but it’s better this way.
I mention this mainly as a reminder to parents that it’s not all painful. There is pleasure also, and in some cases more so. As the Psalmist said, “Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them..”(Psa. 127:5). May God help us to focus more on the good. Not only do they need to know that we are proud of them we need to rejoice in knowing that our efforts to raise them right were not in vain. It is thrilling beyond words when you realize than your child is better than you are! We hear a lot about parents being heroes of the children, but sometimes it’s the child who becomes the hero. That’s really special.
I love all my children and I want what is best for all of them. I hurt when they hurt and I rejoice when they are happy. But I am blessed beyond what I am able to describe when I see them obeying God and living out the principles of His Word! Seeing them show their love for God by loving others is a dream come true. And I’ve seen it happen!
Who is you hero? Sgt. York? Audie Murphy? George Washington? Mom? Dad? What if your hero is your child? Wouldn’t that be something? It could happen. In my case it did–more than once! Think about it! —HDS
