MORE BLESSED TO GIVE

September 22, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“…remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35

Unhappiness comes from mirrors. Happiness comes from windows.

If you want to be miserable, then think about yourself first…

  • what you want,
  • what people are saying about you,
  • what you ought to have done for you,
  • how down you feel,
  • how good you feel.

Just focus on yourself. Feeling good yet? If you are, then something is wrong. Selfishness and happiness just don’t go hand in hand.

If you’re thinking it is better to receive than to give, then you’ll never be happy. You’ll never experience the blessing of giving that Jesus taught.

Hold out your hand and make a fist for at least one minute. Now, relax. Which feels better — the clinched fist or the relaxed and flexible hand?

Imagine that your spirit is tight like that fist and think of how severely that can quench His work in your life. Now relax and submit your spirit to the One who truly blesses.

DAILY GRACE

September 21, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Yesterday, God was very gracious to me;
tomorrow he will be very gracious to me;
and the same will be true the next day, and the next day,
and the next day, until there shall be no more days,
and time shall be swallowed up in eternity.

Between here and heaven, every minute that
the Christian lives will be a minute of grace.

From here to the throne of the Highest, you will have to be
continually supplied with new grace from the Lord who sits
on high.

—– you will never live a truly holy,
happy, blessed day, except by divine grace.

You never think a right thought, never do a right act,
you never make any advance heavenward except by grace.

I like to think that it is so, that every day I am a
monument of mercy; that every day a fresh display of
sovereign grace is made to me;
every day my Father feeds me,
every day my Savior cleanses me,
every day the Comforter sustains me.

Every day, new manifestations of the lovingkindness of the Lord
break forth upon my wondering soul, and give me fresh visions
of his miraculous love.—-

— miracle-working love, making the Christian’s life
to be a series of miracles, at which angels shall gaze
forever in astonished adoration of the amazing love of God
to guilty men.

So I reckon that we may go onward with great confidence;
for, although every day will bring dangers,
every day will also witness divine deliverances.

WALK WORTHY

September 20, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power.” 2Thessalonians 1:11

D.L. Moody once wrote the following story in one of his books, “Some years ago a remarkable picture was exhibited in London. As you looked at it from a distance, you seemed to see a monk engaged in prayer, his hands clasped, his head bowed. As you came nearer, however, and examined the painting more closely, you saw that in reality he was squeezing a lemon into a punch bowl! What a picture that is of the human heart! Superficially examined, it is thought to be the seat of all that is good and noble and pleasing in a man; whereas in reality, until regenerated by the Holy Ghost, it is the seat of all corruption.”
We human beings have become good at pretending to be what we’re not. Some people make a living of it as spies, others simply employ it when beneficial. We pretend to like someone’s cooking, put on a show to impress our boss, fake knowledge and skill to look better in the eyes of others, and act civil around people we can’t stand. We even take that skill into our spiritual lives, putting on a show of spirituality and sincerity when our hearts don’t match our words and actions.

For example, there once was a man in history who made free use of the Christian vocabulary. He talked to others about God’s blessings and painted a picture of Christian principals that would lay the groundwork for the new government he had in mind. He conveyed a deep burden to help his fellow countrymen and a historic responsibility to better the lives of others. He printed sincere stories in newspapers, and even in church papers. He toted an old Bible and referenced it as the secret to his strength. Some people thought he was a prophet from God, others thought he was the devout leader their nation needed. But when everything was eventually revealed, people realized that while Adolf Hitler had the outward evidences of Christianity, his sincerity was a lie.

How sad that someone would use religion to their own selfish advantage, but isn’t that what we do at times? We pray when others are watching, read our Bible because it’s expected, and attend church so no one thinks we’re skipping; yet on the inside our hearts are untouched and our lives are unchanged. We put on the religious show to impress others, while God mourns our inward degradation.

Paul prayed in 2 Thessalonians that the early Christians wouldn’t simply have an outward show of faith, but would truly follow God and love Him with their hearts,– He prayed that God would count them worthy of the work they had done.

If we were to remove your outer Christianity (your words, actions, behaviors, and appearances) and revealed your inner Christianity (your thoughts, desires, emotions, and heart motives), would we still recognize you as a Christian?

Playing the part of a Christian becomes natural as you get into the routine of outwardly following God’s commands, but God’s desire isn’t for you to be an outward conformist (as the Pharisees and other religious leaders of His day were), but He desires for your heart to follow Him.

Is your outer walk consistent with your inner walk? Don’t fall into the trap of hypocrisy, but daily evaluate your motives and allow God to judge your heart. Keep a consistent walk with God both inwardly and outwardly. (Daily in the Word)

WHEN TROUBLE COMES

September 19, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him My salvation.
—Psalm 91:15-16

Are you facing an emergency today? Dial 911—Psalm 91:1, that is.(He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.) God can use adversity in the life of the Christian. None of us wants adversity in our lives, but God can be glorified through it. It might be a sickness that looks life-threatening, and then God heals you. Or it might be a sickness that He allows you to experience, but He is glorified in the midst of it.

Psalm 91 does not say you will never die. But it is saying that you won’t die before your time. It is saying that until God is done with you, His angels will keep you in all your ways . . . in your ups and downs, when you are awake and asleep, in the sunshine and the rain.

What is your part? It is to dwell in the secret place of the Most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty. It is to live in quiet and resting and enduring and remaining, with consistency.

Your objective as a Christian should be to stay as close to the Lord as you possibly can. Because this all-powerful, all-knowing God possesses heaven and earth, has made a covenant with you, loves you, and offers to protect and provide for you, you should make it your objective to get closer to Him, asking, How can I walk so closely with Him that I will be in His very shadow?

You should periodically ask yourself whether you are meeting the criteria of this great psalm, whether you are living up to the conditions that have been set forth. If your answer is yes, then you have God’s word that these promises will be activated in your life.(From “Harvest”, by Greg Laurie)

Those who meet the conditions of God’s commandments never lack comfort –HDS

GOD’S SUPPLY FOR YOUR NEED

September 18, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficent for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

Make no mistake about it–this will be a difficult day for some folks! Different people will face different difficulties: poor health, loss of goods, domestic difficulties, separation from a loved one, the loss of a loved one, temptation, failure, sin, difficult duties, etc. Numerous things bring us pain. And that threatens our peace and joy. These painful experiences cause us to cry out to God for help–that’s when we find sustaining grace!

It is at this point that we discover the treasure of our trials. Although the pain remains, we find grace for our grief. We discover the presence of God in our problem, and out of our weakness we receive strength for the struggle.

That’s what happened with the apostle Paul and his God is your God–and He has not changed! Mark it down–He will be there in your hour of need just as He was with the aged apostle in his affliction.

God’s promise to the prophet Isaiah may be claimed by all of God’s obedient children–“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10 Rest assured that God’s grace will be sufficent for whatever you face. He will not fail you!
