THE TENDER SOLICITUDE

September 7, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Matthew 10:30

What a promise is this! All that befalls you, to the very numbering of your hairs–is known to God! Nothing can happen by accident or chance. Nothing can elude His inspection. The fall of the forest leaf–the fluttering of the insect–the waving of the angel’s wing–the annihilation of a world–all are equally noted by Him! Man speaks of great things and small things–but God knows no such distinction.

How especially comforting to think of this tender solicitude with reference to His own covenant people–that He metes out all  their joys–and all their sorrows! Every sweet–and every bitter–is ordained by Him. Even “wearisome nights” are “appointed.” Not a pang I feel, not a tear I shed–but is known to Him. What are called “dark dealings,” are the ordinations of undeviating faithfulness. Man may err–his ways are often crooked; “but as for God–His way is perfect!” He puts my tears into His bottle. Every moment His everlasting arms are underneath and around me. He keeps me “as the apple of His eye.” He “bears” me as a man bears his own son!

Do I look to the future? Is there much of uncertainty and mystery hanging over it? It may be, much foreboding of evil. Trust Him! All is marked out for me. Dangers will be averted; bewildering mazes will show themselves to be interlaced and interweaved with mercy. “He keeps the feet of His saints.” Not a hair of their head will be touched.

He leads sometimes darkly, sometimes sorrowfully; most frequently by cross and circuitous ways, which we ourselves would not have chosen; but always wisely, always tenderly. With all its mazy windings and turnings, its roughness and ruggedness–the believer’s is not only a right way–but the right way–the best which covenant love and wisdom could select.

“Nothing,” says Jeremy Taylor, “does so establish the mind amid the rollings and turbulence of present things–as both a look above them and a look beyond them; above them–to the steady and loving hand by which they are ruled; and beyond them–to the sweet and beautiful end to which, by that hand, they will be brought.” “The Great Counselor,” says Thomas Brooks, “puts clouds and darkness round about Him, bidding us follow at His beck through the cloud, promising an eternal and uninterrupted sunshine on the other side.” On that “other side” we shall see how every apparent rough blast has been hastening our boats nearer the desired haven.

Well may I commit the keeping of my soul to Jesus in well-doing–as unto a faithful Creator. He gave Himself for me. This transcendent pledge of love–is the guarantee for the bestowment of every other needed blessing. Oh, blessed thought! my sorrows are numbered–by the Man of Sorrows; my tears are counted–by Him who shed first His tears, and then His blood for me! He will impose no needless burden, and exact no unnecessary sacrifice. There was no unnecessary drop in the cup of His own sufferings; neither will there be in that of His people. “Though He slays me–yet will I trust in Him!” “Therefore comfort one another with these words.”–By John MacDuff

JOY IS A CHOICE

September 6, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Looking back over my life as a Christian I am reminded of the many things that have helped me. Of all the things that could be mentioned, nothing has helped me more than God’s Word. And, one of the most helpful portions is found in Philippines 4. It has been helpful because it teaches us how to have joy inspite of our tendency to worry. Here we see Paul’s command (vs. 4); counsel (vs.6-8); challenge (vs.9); choice (vs.10); contentment (vs.11-12); and confidence (vs. 13,19). It’s easy to see that joy demands a choice on my part. If I don’t have it I have no one to blame but myself. I am obligated to “rejoice in the Lord”(Vs.4). So are you!
Charles Swidoll gives us these insightful words:

I have discovered that a joyful countenance has nothing to do with one’s age or one’s occupation (or lack of it) or one’s geography or education or marital status or good looks or circumstances. Joy is a choice!

Joy is a matter of attitude that stems from one’s confidence in God—that He is at work, that He is in full control, that He is in the midst of whatever has happened, is happening, and will happen. Either we fix our minds on that and determine to laugh again, or we wail and whine our way through life, complaining that we never got a fair shake. We are the ones who consciously determine which way we shall go. To paraphrase the poet:

One ship sails east
One ship sails west
Regardless of how the winds blow.
It is the set of the sail
And not the gale
That determines the way we go.
(Ella Wheeler Wilcox
)

Regardless of how severely the winds of adversity may blow,
we set our sails toward joy.

AN EXAMPLE OF HUMILITY

September 5, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”–John 13:13-15

While Jesus and His disciples were gathered for their last meal together, the Lord took time to humble Himself in front of them and wash the dust off their feet. He didn’t care that He was performing the job of a servant. He didn’t order the job be done for Him. He simply saw the need presented and took it upon Himself to fulfill it.

After this example of great humility, Jesus gave His disciples, and gives us today, an important command, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.” Christ desires that we would follow His example in humility and graciously serve others.

Do you realize the context of this story? The Lord was preparing for His death on the Cross. He was spending His final moments with the men He had chosen to carry on His work after His death. Of all the commands, principles, or lessons He could have shared with them at this time, He took extra time to show them that a humble and servant-like attitude was important to Him.

Whom have you served recently? When was the last time you humbled yourself and displayed a servant-like spirit through serving others? God desires that you would follow His example and humble yourself before others. Even in times of great difficulty or trial, you can show humility through helping others.

Commit to displaying humility this week. Whether through serving at a church event, assisting a neighbor in some area, or helping your spouse, determine to follow Christ’s example of humility. (Daily in the Word)

GREAT IDEAS—ALL MINE

September 4, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“—in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man on the things of others.”—Philippians 2:3-4
Someone has described our present generation as the “Me Generation”, and for good reason. We all tend to be selfish. Our selfish spirit manifests itself in many ways. The following “Nine Great Ideas: All Mine”, by an unknown writer, illustrates what I’m talking about:

1. My idea of visitation: everybody come to see me.

2. My idea of sympathy: everybody suffering with me.

3. My idea of a sinner: the man for whom I have a great dislike.

4. My idea of a meek man: the man who yields to me.

5. My idea of a contentious man: the man who takes issue with me.

6. My idea of a wise man: the man who listens to me.

7. My idea of unity: everybody agreeing with me.

8. My idea of cooperation: everybody working with me.

9. My idea of a good sermon: one that fits and hits everybody but me.

The bottom-line is this—we will never be of any great usefulness in God’s kingdom until we value others more than self. As long as we “look  out for number one” instead of the needs of others we miss our God-given purpose in life. It is precisely for this reason that so many people are miserable. As someone said, the way to spell JOY is, Jesus first, Others second, and Yourself last.

NOT AFRAID

September 3, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.” Hebrews 11:23

We talk a lot about the dreadful condition and the desperate need of our nation, but few  actually do anything about it. Why? We Christians also talk a great deal about winning the lost before it is too late, but very few make any effort to do so. Why? I believe the answer is the same in both cases. Perhaps this illustration from Paul Chappell will help.

Russia was a controversial place during the early 1900s. Led by a dictator named Stalin, the country built up forces just in time for World War 2, a war that saw them betrayed by their “ally” Hitler, and eventually led to their switch to the Allied side of the war. One of Stalin’s leaders in his regime was Nikita Khrushchev. Khrushchev served many different roles including soldier, military leader, ruler of Ukraine, and party official. Khrushchev had a hand in a lot that went on during Stalin’s rule. After the death of Stalin, a long battle for the control of Russia took place, eventually leading to Khrushchev’s rise to power.

While in office, Khrushchev sought to de-Stalinize the nation and move them toward a more liberal form of government. He publicly denounced Stalin’s policies and ideas and spoke of his own ideas for moving Russia forward into a time of prosperity and growth. At one such meeting, he spent an unusual amount of time degrading Stalin. After his speech, during the comment period, someone in the crowd yelled out, “You worked with Stalin. Why didn’t you stop him?” A hush came over the room, and Khrushchev angrily boomed, “Who said that?” No one replied. “Now you know why I did nothing” he explained.

Khrushchev’s fear of Stalin kept him from speaking out against the atrocities Stalin committed. He allowed his fear to cause him to follow along in practices he knew were wrong, but no matter how much he detested Stalin, or how loudly he renounced his ideas, Khrushchev was always tied to the acts of the previous administration.

Even so, fear often causes us to neglect doing what we know we should do. Doing what is right often involves risk and/or sacrifice. We know what we should do, but we are frozen by fear. Fortunately, for Israel, the parents of Moses fought through their fears and did what was right. What about you?

If the need is truly as great as we say it is, should we not be making our very best effort to meet it? Don’t allow fear to rule your life and ruin your usefulness. You don’t have the right to be that selfish! Obey God regardless of how you feel and trust Him to supply your needs and bless your efforts.
