BIBLE BLESSINGS

August 11, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Paul wrote: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” In other words, the Bible is good for teaching—it tells us what is true; it is good for reproof—it tells us what’s not right; it is good for correction, literally meaning “to stand us up on our feet”—it tells us how to get it right; and finally, the Word of God trains us to perform what is right. That’s a pretty hefty resume for one book. A book like this must be taken seriously.

Many years ago, a man named Robert Chapman gave Christians a powerful reminder of our privilege and responsibility as stewards of God’s Word. He wrote:

This book contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, and the soldier’s sword. It should fill the memory, test the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It involves the highest responsibility, rewards the greatest labor, and condemns all who will trifle with its sacred contents. Christ is its grand subject, our good is its design, and the glory of God is its end.

The question then is not “Why study the Bible,” but “How can we afford not to?”  What will you do with God’s Word today?  It’s not meant to simply adorn the table in your living room or lay on your bedside table, unread.

Pick it up—use it.  It’s the perfect blueprint . . . for building your life!  (From Wisdom for the Heart)

WONDERFUL LOVE

August 10, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Christ is wonderful in His love. Love was the first and eternal link in the golden chain lowered from the highest throne in heaven down to the lowest depth of earth. That Christ should love us was the beginning of wonders. When we endeavor to comprehend that love, measure it, fathom it, scale it-we learn that it has heights we cannot reach, depths we cannot sound, lengths and breadths we cannot measure! Such love, such divine love, such infinite love, such everlasting love, such redeeming, dying love, is an ocean whose eternal waves waft into our fallen world every wonder of God and of heaven.

That Jesus should love such beings as us-that He should love us while we were yet sinners-that He should set His heart upon us, choose us, die for us, call us, and finally bring us to glory, knowing what we were, and what we would prove to be-oh, this is wondrous love indeed! Plunge into this fathomless, boundless Ocean of love, O sin-burdened one! It will cover all your sins, it will efface all your guilt; it will flood over all your unworthiness-and, floating upon its golden waves, it will gently waft you to the shore of eternal blessedness!

How often have you wondered why Christ should set His heart upon such a one as you! And is it not a wonder that, amid all your fickleness and backslidings and cold, base returns, this love of God towards you has not chilled or changed? But do not rest, do not be satisfied with your present limited experience of Christ’s wonderful love. It is so marvelously great. This Ocean of love is so fathomless, boundless, and inexhaustible, you may plunge, with all your infirmities, sins, and sorrows, into its fullness, exclaiming, “O, the depth!” The well is deep! Drink abundantly, O beloved!–Octavius Winslow (1808-1878)

THANK GOD FOR PAIN

August 9, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.–Psalm 34:1

In her biography of Dr. Paul Brand, Dorothy Wilson tells the story of one night in Brand’s life when his fear nearly became reality:

Dr. Paul W. Brand, the noted leprosy expert who was chief of the rehabilitation branch of the Leprosarium in Carville, Lousiana, had a frightening experience one night when he thought he had contracted leprosy. Dr. Brand arrived in London one night after an exhausting transatlantic ocean trip and long train ride from the English coast. He was getting ready for bed, had taken off his shoes, and as he pulled off a sock, discovered there was no feeling in his heel. To most anyone else this discovery would have meant very little, a momentary numbness. But Dr. Brand was world famous for his restorative surgery on lepers in India. He had convinced himself and his staff at the leprosarium that there was no danger of infection from leprosy after it reached a certain stage. The numbness in his heel terrified him.

He rose mechanically, found a pin, sat down again, and pricked the small area below his ankle. He felt no pain. He thrust the pin deeper, until a speck of blood showed. Still he felt nothing…He supposed, like other workers with leprosy, he had always half expected it…In the beginning probably not a day had gone by without the automatic searching of his body for the telltale patch, the numbed area of skin. All that night the great orthopedic surgeon tried to imagine his new life as a leper, an outcast, his medical staff’s confidence in their immunity shattered by his disaster. And the forced separation from his family. As night receded, he yielded to hope and in the morning, with clinical objectivity, with steady fingers he bared the skin below his ankle, jabbed in the point-and yelled. Blessed was the sensation of pain! He realized that during the long train ride, sitting immobile, he had numbed a nerve. From then on, whenever Dr. Brand cut his finger, turned an ankle, even when he suffered from “agonizing nausea as his whole body reacted in violent self-protection from mushroom poisoning, he was to respond with fervent gratitude, “Thank God for pain!”

David’s life was filled with trouble, yet he always saw a reason to praise the Lord. Do yourself a favor and study this Psalm. God has a purpose in pain. Regardless of the nature of the pain you are suffering there can be some benefit from it and, even if you never see exactly what it is, knowing God can use it for some blessed benefit gives you a good reason to praise Him. Now you decide–how will you start your day? You can wallow in self pity or you can praise the Lord. It should be easy to figure out what course of action is the best. But, it’s your choice. Think about it!

GOD WILL MAKE A WAY

August 8, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. —Romans 15:13

Thousands of Christians in North America have heard one of Don Moen’s praise songs which he wrote to affirm God’s sovereignty in the Christian’s life.  However, most Christians who have sung this song do not know the kind of hopelessness from which the lyrics came.

Don Moen was awakened in the middle of the night by a phone call from his mother-in-law; a tragic car accident had just occurred. Don’s sister-in-law, Susan, her husband, and their four little boys were on an automobile trip when tragedy struck. They all were seriously injured, and their eight-year-old son was dying from his injuries.

As Don and his wife grieved and poured out their hearts to the Lord, they felt helpless to communicate any hope to Susan and Craig. Don recalls asking the Lord to help him express hope to the family members. In a very short time, Don scribbled some lyrics and composed the music for a chorus that, to this day, gives believers a deep sense of hope in the midst of difficult times. The lyrics read:

God will make a way,

Where there seems to be no way;

He works in ways we cannot see,

He will make a way for me.

He will be my guide,

Hold me closely to His side;

With love and strength for each new day,

He will make a way. He will make a way! To put it simply, the only way to have hope is to have Him. The only way to have peace is to have Him.

As Paul reminds us in Romans 15:13, hope—as well as peace and joy—come through faith. It is true that many people claim to have faith in God during the good times, but when trials come their way, their faith is clearly lacking. In times when our vision of God becomes blurred by sorrow, the eyes of faith are more important than ever.

George Macdonald, author and mentor to C.S. Lewis, once wrote: “I think faith can never have a greater victory than when it will trust even in the midst of darkness and doubt and temptation.” What a great definition of victorious faith!—faith in our victorious God who never loses control of His people . . . and His planet.

The truth is, God’s will for us isn’t even nullified by our suffering, nor does it end at the grave. Our hope rests in the promise that our lives will stretch far beyond these few fleeting moments on earth, into an eternity of heavenly joy and satisfaction.

Are you willing to believe that God will make a way where there seems to be no way? He works in ways we cannot see . . . He will make a way!

Faith in the promises of God naturally leads to a hopeful expectation of their fulfillment. Pray that God will increase your faith in Him, not allowing it to waver amidst difficult circumstances, but instead, causing it to grow stronger through them. (From “A Wisdom Retreat”, by Stephen Davey)

THE SCHOOL OF SUFFERING

August 7, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Everyone has sorrows and a good number of people hate it, and would do almost anything to avoid them. Some even think that being good or doing good will aid in the escape of them. But it never does. Often the best people have the worst problems. Being a Christian, even a “good” one, does not exempt us from grief. We can, however, be transformed in our trials by trusting Christ. It’s true. God doesn’t want us to just endure our sorrows. He wants us to understand that there can be a blessing in them–a blessing that only comes if we accept them in love and with trust.

Misery has a mission. Pain has a purpose. Even when we are chastised,”it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”(Hebrews 12:11) If we could see the end result there would be no complaint. But not seeing is all a part of the learning process. We walk by faith, not by sight.

God doesn’t want us to waste our sorrows. Although we dread them and shrink back from them, we are assured by His word that He will use them for some good. Indeed, there are some things we can never learn except through the school of suffering. It’s often the case that God wants us to ascend to some new height in life, where we’ve never been before, and the only way to get there is through strain and pain. Were there no obstacles and opposition there would be no opportunity. We get the best things out of the worst things. Just as the rush needs the mire the saints need the fire. As Job said,”when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.”(Job 23:10). Instead of cursing your trials trust God to use them to produce some glorious good. The good might not be of a personal nature, nor a present blessing, but someday in some way God will do exactly as He promised–good will come from them. Remember the old song that says,”We’ll understand it better bye and bye”? It’s true! Someday the course will be over. You will graduate with honors and an experience that will pay eternal dividends. Then you will say,”It was worth it all”.
