THE CHANGE AGENT

June 14, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Although some folks aren’t serious enough about life, others are too serious. They are so miserable because of the badness of the world that they can’t enjoy it’s beauty–they even lose the ability to laugh. They want change. They work for change. They often act as though everything depended on them, that others can’t get along without them. Their intentions are good, but their assumptions are wrong. We can’t change the world. We’re not God.

These words from Jesus help us gain the right perspective. Speaking of the Holy Spirit, He said, “He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”(John 16:8)

Commenting on that statement in 1757, Samuel Davies wrote:” The Holy Spirit is the only effectual reformer of the world!—–
  legislators may make laws against crime;
  philosophers may reason against vice;
  ministers may preach against sin;
  conscience may remonstrate against evil;
  the divine law may prescribe, and threaten hell;
  the gospel may invite and allure to heaven;
but all will be in vain!

The strongest arguments, the most melting entreaties, the most alarming denunciations from God and man, enforced with the highest authority, or the most compassionate tears—all will have no effect—all will not effectually reclaim one sinner, nor gain one sincere convert to righteousness!

Paul, Apollos, and Peter, with all their apostolic abilities, can do nothing, without the Holy Spirit. Paul may plant the seed—and Apollos may water it; but God alone can make it grow! “So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.” 1 Corinthians 3:7.

Never will peace and harmony be established in this jangling world—until this Divine Agent takes the work in hand.

It is He alone—who can melt down the obstinate hearts of men into love and peace!

It is He alone—who can soften their rugged and savage tempers, and transform them into mutual benevolence!

It is He alone—who can quench those lusts that set the world on fire, and implant the opposite virtues and graces.—- mentioned by Paul, as the fruit of the Spirit, because the Spirit alone is the author of them. And if these dispositions were predominant in the world—what a serene, calm, peaceful region would it be, undisturbed with the hurricanes of human passions!

Oh, how much do we need the influence of the blessed Spirit . . .
  to break the heart of stone,
  to enlighten the dark mind, and
  to comfort the desponding soul!”

THE UNEXPLAINABLE

June 13, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord.”–Isaiah 55:8

There are some things in life that just do not make sense, such as the placebo effect, a round earth with a flat horizon, and the Bermuda Triangle. Though scientists constantly search to understand these mysteries, for the majority of us, they are so far beyond our comprehension that we just accept them as a part of the universe we will never understand.

In the same way, there are things about God that even the greatest minds will never be able to comprehend. For those that need to have the answer for everything in life, this is difficult and can be an obstacle to fully accepting God’s love and authority. For others, it is comforting to know that while we may not fully understand everything, the One who holds everything in His hands does.

We cannot allow doubt to creep into our thoughts when we don’t understand something; this is exactly what the enemy wants. Instead, we must ask God to help us accept that some things are perhaps hidden from our understanding for a purpose, and we must trust Him regardless.

God has wisely kept us in the dark concerning future events and reserved for Himself the knowledge of them, that He may train us up in a dependence upon Himself and a continued readiness for every event.
Matthew Henry         —–From Turning Point

REFUSE TO FEAR

June 9, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?”–Mark 4:38

God’s promised to bring you through each storm you face; you must trust His guidance.

Fear is a crippling emotion that many people allow to rule their lives. Fear of the future, fear of the past, and even fear of the present can keep people from doing many things. It is said that Communist dictator Joseph Stalin was so afraid of assassination, he chose a different bedroom in his eight-bedroom house to sleep in each night, so no one knew his exact location.

Notice the fear of the apostles as they faced a severe storm while crossing the Sea of Galilee, “And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?” These experienced fishermen were so afraid of the storm that they woke Christ from His sleep and questioned His loving care for them.

What would cause the disciples to question the very love of Christ? Had He not proven to them time and again His love for them, for their countrymen, and for the entire human race? The fear of dying so gripped their hearts that they forgot the love of God.

G. Campbell Morgan once said, “What we do in the crisis always depends on whether we see the difficulties in the light of God or God in the shadow of the difficulties.” “Does God care?” asked the disciples. God did care, but fear kept them from believing this.

Have you ever questioned God’s love and care in the midst of a storm? Have you ever felt fear so much that you began questioning the will of God? Never forget that any circumstance out of your control is in the will of God.

Consider the following promises from God that apply to your storm:

“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”-Hebrews 13:5-6 (By Dr. Paul Chappell)

PURE LOGIC

June 8, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Jesus saith unto him,I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but through Me.” –John 14:6

Men have used the laws of logic in mathematics, science, and history, but when it comes to the spiritual world, they throw these laws away. Instead, they suggest: What is right for you to believe is correct, and what is right for me to believe is equally correct.

I read about a man who was driving in the country. He passed a barn with painted targets on the side facing the road. Interestingly, in the center of each target was an arrow. The driver was amazed by this farmer’s skill with the bow. He decided to drive up to the farmhouse and congratulate the farmer.

To his astonishment, the farmer laughed and said, “I didn’t do that. It was done by a young guy in our town who shot a bunch of arrows into the side of my barn, and then painted bull’s eyes around each arrow.”

What a perfect illustration of the shift that has taken place in today’s society. The once-held conviction that everyone had a right to his own opinion has been replaced with the belief that every opinion is equally right. Thus, not only is our society living in complete rebellion to Scripture, it is also living in opposition to the very laws of logic to which it holds. It simply invites you to shoot your arrow and then assures you that wherever it strikes, it will be a bull’s eye!

But think about it for a minute . . . you have a pot of water sitting on top of your stove; it’s boiling and the burner is red hot. You say to your friend, “I believe the water is hot,” but he says, “I believe it’s cold.” So you and he agree that the truth is the water is hot for you, and cold for him. How absurd would that be? The water is either hot or cold. One of you believes the truth,  the other believes a lie. —- Although both of you could be wrong, both of you cannot be right.

The Western world now believes that you can shoot your arrow of faith in any direction and a benevolent supreme being will approve every shot. This is why you can tell someone that you believe Christ is a fine moral leader, and you will be viewed as a nice religious person. On the other hand, if you dare to say that you believe Jesus Christ is the only true and living Savior, you are labeled an intolerant zealot.

The truth remains:  there is a real target—God— and Romans 3:23 informs us that our arrows are continually falling short of Him. In fact, we’re consistently shooting broken arrows that don’t fly straight . . . they never even hit the target.  But we can get in range of it when we open our  hearts to  the truth  in His Word . . . and maybe someday we’ll hit the bull’s eye!

Only by Christ’s redeeming grace are we able to discover that He is the right Way, the correct Truth . . . and the only Life. –By Stephen Davey

GROANING WITH GRIEF

June 7, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travileth in pain together until now.”-Romans 8:22

We are constantly bombarded with bad news, from the media and contact with others. We live in perilous times. Some folks would have us to believe that the planet is on the verge of total destruction. That kind of talk gets depressing. So, what are the facts?

The Bible tells us “the whole creation groaneth and travileth in pain”. This suffering includes all of creation. Even God’s children are not exempt. We all suffer. Life is tough for everyone. Right now some of you feel you are drowning in a sea of sorrow. You suffer to such an extent that you wonder if you can make it through another day.

So, what is the cause of all this? In a word it is “sin”. We live in a fallen world that has been affected by sin, consquently all of creation suffers and we groan. Oh how we groan!

The good news is that it won’t always be this way. Although it is bitter now, there is a better day coming. Our grief will give way to glory, burdens to blessings, drugery to delight, and pain to pleasure. Paul tells us our afflictions are “but for a moment” and “worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” Hang on Christian—the best is yet to come!

But can the future blessings out weigh the present burdens? Indeed they can when you are talking about what God provides. When we stand before the Lord we will have no complaints. Our reward will be more than ample to satisfy us forever. It is this hope that helps us get through the tough times.
For every need God has an answer.
