OUR DUTY TO OTHERS

June 24, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”— Matt 7:12

This is a wonderfully comprehensive rule of action. It bids us consider the interests of others as well as our own. It bids us set our neighbour alongside of ourself, and think of him as having the same rights as we have, and requiring from us the same treatment that we give to ourself. It gives us a standard by which to test all our motives and all our conduct bearing on others. We are at once in thought to change places with the person toward whom duty is to be determined, and ask, “if he were where I am, and I were where He is, how should I want him to treat me in this case?” the application of this rule would instantly put a stop to all rash, hasty actions; for it commands us to consider our neighbour and question our own heart before doing anything. It would slay all selfishness; for it compels us to regard our neighbours interests as precisely equal to our own. It would lead us to honour others; for it puts us and them on the same platform.

The application of this rule would put a stop to all injustice and wrong; for none of us would do injustice or wrong to ourselves, and we are to treat our neighbour as if he were ourself. It would lead us to seek the highest good of all other men, even the lowliest; for we surely want all men to seek our good. The thorough applying of this Golden Rule would end all conflict between capital and labour; for it would give the employer a deep, loving interest in the men he employs, and lead him to think of their good in all ways. It would also give to every employe a desire for the prosperity of his employer and an interest in his business. It would end all strife in families, in communities, among nations. The perfect working of this rule everywhere would make heaven; for the will of God would then “be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”–J. R. Miller

WORSHIP IS A WITNESS

June 23, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. “–Heb. 13:15

Speaking in reference to the importance of worship Pastor Greg Laurie writes: I came to faith because of worshiping Christians. No one invited me to their meeting. No one broke down the gospel for me and said, “Here is how to come to Jesus Christ. . . .” But I saw a group of Christians sitting on the front lawn of my high school campus, singing songs to Jesus. I watched them and thought, “They have something I don’t have,” and it opened my heart to listen to the message that was presented.

There is a direct connection between our worship and our witness. Acts 2 says of the early church, “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” (verses 46–47).

We are being watched by the world. And they marvel when a Christian can praise God when he or she is going through a hardship. It’s a powerful testimony. But sometimes they come in and joins us in the pew. They sit next to us. The question is what kind of worshiper are you? What kind of witness are you?

You may say, “Well, it doesn’t matter.”

Actually it does. They are checking things out. Maybe they have never been to church before. They are sitting next to you, and while the worship is going on, you’re preoccupied. You’re chatting with a friend or daydreaming or texting. Pay attention and engage, because they are watching you. Praise and worship can be a sacrifice because sometimes we don’t feel like worshiping. But our worship is a witness. Let’s be good witnesses. Let’s make sure our hearts are in the right place. ABRAHAM’S AMAZING ADVENTURE

June 22, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. “--Heb. 11:8

The story of Abraham is amazing! He began his journey without knowing his ultimate destination. Who does that? When I was a kid we sometimes took a “Sunday drive”. Dad would simply drive the country roads with no set destination in mind, but we knew we would end up back home around dark. That however wasn’t the case with Abraham. He and Sara moved from their home and set out on a journey known only to God.

Amazingly Abraham set out on his journey without any complaint or questions. He simply took one step at a time trusting God to lead the way. Rather than resent or resist God’s command, bemoaning what he had to leave, he rested in his belief that God would not lead him astray. He based everything on the divine call. Basically all he knew was Whom he knew and believed. Let that sink in–it speaks volumes. So great was his faith that he is called “the father of all them that believe“( Rom. 4:11).

Don’t mistake Abraham’s actions for “blind faith”, taking a shot in the dark, or the lifestyle of a gypsy. He wasn’t like a hobo just wandering from place to place. Although he didn’t know exactly where he was going, he knew–

— Who was leading. He wasn’t just doing as he pleased, nor wandering aimlessly, nor following someone else. He was confident that God was directing his steps.

— Why he was going. This was an act of obedience. He was obeying God– a matter of great importance to him. It should be the same with us. Why is more important than what. What you do doesn’t matter if it’s what God wants you to do. Obedience to God should be the why behind all we do.

— What the result would be. He knew because God had revealed it to him. He would be blessed and a blessing. He knew a reward awaited him. And that goes a long way in keeping us going when the way gets long and the going gets tough. When you know your labor is not in vain you refuse to give up. Many have given up on life and resigned themselves to misery simply because they don’t know their God-given purpose in life.

None of us will receive the same kind of revelation or mission from God that Abraham did, but He has a plan for each of us. We don’t know all the details as to the future, but we can know that God will never lead us astray and that our faithfulness will be rewarded. What we leave behind should not be a matter of concern when we know something better lies ahead. We don’t need to know where we’re going as long as we are going with the Lord. For the child of God in the will of God, the future always looks bright if we look far enough ahead.–HDS

THE “LITTLES”

June 21, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.”–Eccl 10:1

It was Solomon who warned us that it is “the little foxes that spoil the vines“( SS 2:15) yet most people ignore his warning. They suppose as long as there is not a total moral collapse that all is well. But they put themselves in grave danger by ignoring the little things in life.

J. R. Miller explained it well in his comments on our text. He said—“It is sad to see how some holy and noble characters are marred by little–yet grievous, faults and blemishes! One man is generous–but he desires always to have his charity praised. Another is disposed to be kind and helpful–but by his manner, he hurts or humiliates the one he befriends. Another is unselfish and devout–but is careless of promises and engagements. He makes appointments, and never thinks of them again. He borrows money, and does not repay it. His friends say, “He is so forgetful!” Yes; but how his forgetfulness mars his character and hurts his influence! Forgetfulness is worse than an acceptable weakness; it is a sin! Untruthfulness is a blot in all eyes. Whenever SELF leaks out in conduct or disposition–it is a dead fly in the perfume It makes little difference, that a person is not intentionally at fault in the things which so mar his life. Carelessness and thoughtlessness are themselves such serious moral blemishes–that they make impossible, any excuse for delinquencies resulting from them. We need to look to “the littles” which either make or mar godly character. No fault is too small to be worth curing, and no fragment of beauty is too small to be worth setting in the mosaic of character.”

Before you break your arm patting yourself on the back because you excel where others fail, examine your heart. What you might consider a minor matter could become a major issue, causing your downfall if left unattended. You don’t have to be the worst person in town to cause great harm. Sometimes simple neglect can do more harm than an overt act of rebellion.–HDS

DAILY DOXOLOGY

June 20, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.“–Philippians 2:13

One of the hardest, but most important, lessons for children and young people to learn is to view hardships in light of their purpose and outcome. Most children don’t like to practice scales on the piano, but they love a superior rating at the recital. Most young athletes don’t relish the hours of grueling practice, but they love the joy of victory and accomplishment.

Granted, the purpose and outcome of every hardship in life is not always evident. But all we need to know is that God is at work in us “to will and to do of His good pleasure.” God has a purpose (Romans 8:28) and His outcome is plainly stated: to conform us to the image of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). And for that He is worthy to be praised. It’s why Paul wrote that we should “in everything give thanks” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). We may not thank God for the pain, but we can certainly worship Him because He is in control of our life—confident that He has a purpose and knows the outcome. Worship in times of hardship isn’t easy. If you need a guide, use Paul’s words in Romans 11:33-36—a doxology of praise when we don’t have all the answers.–Turning point

I hope you see the importance of this. To become the person God wants you to be, not only must we know of God’s work for us, we must also understand God’s work in us. The Holy Spirit is working to make us holy, and that enables us to be happy –regardless of the happenings. Then we can “Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;( Phil. 2:14-15) –HDS
