CONSECRATION

March 20, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.— 1 Cor 6:19-20

The fact that we have been bought with a price, not with corruptible things, as silver or gold, but with the precious Blood of Christ, lies at the foundation of all consecration (1Pe 1:18). In consecration we do not make ourselves Christ’s but recognize that we are His by an unalienable right. In the slave market human beings were sold like cattle; but this institution is set forth as the first step in our devotion to the service and person of Jesus Christ, the Lord who bought us. Slaves pass from one master to another. Among the Hebrews an Israelite would sometimes sell himself into slavery until the year of Jubilee, or until one of his kinsmen redeemed him (Lev 25:47-50). So our Kinsman, Christ, bought us back from sin and guilt and condemnation; He says, as He buys us: “Ye shall be for Me, ye shall not be for another.”

Our Lord’s claim upon us is built on His own supreme sacrifice. “He gave Himself for us,” says the Apostle Paul, “that He might redeem us from all iniquity” (Tit 2:14). He gave Himself up to the Death of the Cross, that we might reckon ourselves to be dead unto sin. The Apostles constantly speak of themselves as “the slaves of Jesus Christ.” Oh, that we might all live like this, counting nothing as our exclusive possession, but believing that all we have has been given to us to use in trust for our Lord and Master. He assigns to us each and all the work that we can do best. Some are called to work for Him in the high places of the Church, and others to toil in lowly obscurity, but everything is important in the great House of the Master, and all He requires is faithful service. I shall never forget when I first entered into the realization of the Ownership of my Lord; that I was His chattel, and had no longer any option or choice for one’s enjoyment or emolument. The life which was commenced then has been one of perfect freedom, for this is the enigma of His service, that Christ’s slaves are alone free; and that the more absolutely they obey Him, the more completely do they drink of the sweet cup of liberty!

O Lord, I give myself to Thee. I am born to serve Thee, to be Thine, to be Thy instrument. I ask not to see–I ask not to know–I ask simply to be used. Amen.—F. B. Meyer

HOW TO BE HAPPY

March 17, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

Considering the wretched condition of this wicked world one might wonder how it is possible to be truly happy, or to “rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory“( 1 Pet. 1:8). There seems to be 1001 things working against us to hinder our happiness. But it’s not just the world that tends to get us down. Our biggest enemy is within. Our aging achy body, frail flesh, and propensity to sin works against us (Rom.7). So how can we hope for happiness? I could approach this in a lot of ways, but perhaps a story from Spurgeon’s experience will help.

Jordan Standridge wrote an article entitled “The Three Verses that Kept Spurgeon from Quitting the Ministry“. If you are really serious about how to be happy in this hellish world it will be worth your time to consider what he said. Here it is:

It was 1856 and things could not have been going better for Spurgeon.

Twenty-two years old, married for about a year, already with twin boys, Spurgeon was also experiencing great blessing in ministry. He was preaching to thousands. On October 19, 1856 some say almost 14,000 gathered to hear him preach, even though only 10,000 fit in the building. They were eager to hear this young pastor who preached the Bible. But there were many jealous people.

That night during the service at around 6 o’clock some people started shouting “fire!”

A stampede broke out, and in the midst of the panic, people trampled over each other causing the death of seven people.

There was no fire.

Because Spurgeon was so distraught over the events that occurred, he was unwilling to preach the next Sunday, he even thought about quitting the ministry altogether. And it wasn’t until the Sunday after that that he was willing to return to the pulpit. Here were his first words as he got up to preach that morning,

“I almost regret, this morning, that I have ventured to occupy this pulpit because I feel utterly unable to preach to you for your profit… I feel somewhat of those same painful emotions which well-nigh prostrated me before. You will, therefore, excuse me this morning if I make no allusion to that solemn event, or scarcely any. I could not preach to you upon a subject that should be in the least allied to it. I would be obliged to be silent if I should bring to my remembrance that terrible scene in the midst of which it was my solemn lot to stand. God shall doubtless overrule it. It may not have been so much by the malice of men, as some have asserted. It was, perhaps, simple wickedness— an intention to disturb a congregation—and certainly with no thought of committing so terrible a crime as that of the murder of those unhappy creatures. God forgive those who were the instigators of that horrid act! They have my forgiveness from the depths of my soul. It shall not stop us, however. We are not in the least degree daunted by it. I shall preach there, again, yes and God shall give us souls there and Satan’s empire shall tremble more than ever! “God is with us; who is he that shall be against us?” The text I have selected is one that has comforted me and, in a great measure, enabled me to come here today—the single reflection upon it had such a power of comfort on my depressed spirit. It is this—“Wherefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, of things in Heaven and things in earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”—Philippians 2:9-11.”

Christ’s exaltation was what brought him peace. Knowing that Jesus Christ knew what had occurred two weeks earlier, and that he had a master plan for this event brought him great comfort.

As we think about tragedy, we must train our minds to think eternally.

A lot of people are broken and they want to live a better life. A life that doesn’t involve fear, racism, and war. The sad reality is that there will always be injustice. Human beings in over 6000 years of world history have not been able to stop injustice. And although we should all strive to make this world a better place, through selfless love for one another, we have to resist the urge to put our hope in this life, because that is what has caused this mess to begin with.

We must tell them that hope can only come when we value what Christ does. And Christ reminds us constantly to buy stock in eternity, because he is going to be forever exalted.

The only way that justice is possible is if every individual who has ever lived will face God one day. And even better, every human being will bow the knee to Christ one day. His exaltation truly begins on the day foreshadowed by Paul in Philippians 2.

Spurgeon rejoiced in knowing that the men who shouted “Fire!” would one day exalt Christ by bowing their knee to Him.

Micah Xavier Johnson will one day bow the knee to Jesus.

Every cop will one day bow the knee to Christ.

Every president and king will one day bow the knee to Christ.

Every human being will bow their knee to Christ. And unless they repent and give their life to Christ, they will be forced to do so and cast to hell. And instantly justice will be served.

There will never be perfect justice in this life, but one day soon Jesus Christ will reign and he will rule perfectly and we will all be free from sin and its consequences.

Sometimes we treat Spurgeon and other heroes of the faith as super-human. But they were as vulnerable to despair as me and you. They wisely chose to think eternally in the midst of suffering. Eternal thoughts are the only thoughts that will give us comfort. We cannot hope in politics and we cannot hope in morality. We must focus instead on the day that Jesus will be exalted and when we will enjoy Him forever.

CATBIRD CHRISTIANS

March 17, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. “–Col. 4:6

There are very many things that may choke out love in the home. One of these is the lack of kindness. If you have grown less kind in your feelings, in your actions, and in your words–then love cannot thrive. Kindness is one of the best fertilizers for love.

There are so many people who have two sets of tones in which to speak–and two sets of manners in which they act. They have their company manners–and their family manners. When they have company–then the voice is soft and pleasant, and the manners are agreeable and kindly. They treat their friends with the greatest consideration; but as soon as their friends are gone, the pleasant voice changes into crossness or harshness and fault-finding–and the pleasantness of manner disappears! In how many homes is this true!

The greater consideration, the greater kindness–is due the home folks. Otherwise, love cannot flourish. If you wish to have love for your home folks–then you must show them the consideration that is due them.

Some professors of religion are like the catbird!
When it is away from its nest–then it is one of the sweetest of the northern warblers; but when it is close to its nest–then you will hear only a harsh, discordant note. It has no sweetness in its voice while at its nest.

In the same way, some people reserve all their kindness, tenderness, and sweetness–for those outside the family circle. Is it any wonder that love dies in such a home? —Charles Naylor, 1920

“Let love be without dissimulation” (hypocrisy.)– Romans 12:9

WHEN WE SAY “NO”

March 16, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.”–Jer. 17:23

Yesterday’s devotion was entitled “When God Says ‘No'”. Today I want you to think about when we say “No”. Although it might at first be a disappointment when God says no, it should soon become our delight. We get ourselves into serious trouble when we refuse to seek, acknowledge, or accept God’s will. Yet many are obviously displeased with the will of God. Some act as though He might make a mistake and needs to be monitored by them.Although God’s will is perfect and His ways best, most people refuse to obey His commands, follow His counsel, accept His changes, or heed His warnings. They refuse to give Him their attention, and the outcome is predictable.

God, however is patient, long-suffering and determined. Not only does He speak to us through His Word, He is actively involved in our lives seeking to get our attention. We often talk about our belief that there are no accidents with God, but we don’t seem to believe it. We claim we believe that God either causes or allows everything that happens, but strangely enough we often fail to see His hand in the affairs of our life. While we say God is good all the time, when things are going our way, we act as though that isn’t the case when something displeases us. Like ancient Israel we tend to murmur and complain when our desire is denied.

This is not to say that every bad thing that happens is because we’ve done something wrong–good people have bad problems. They can be for reasons other than correction. but we shouldn’t be so quick to rule out the possibility that our difficultly is divinely designed to correct the course of our life. A trial certainly ought to cause us to pause and investigate the state of our life. God might be trying to tell us something. And if we are disobeying God’s command or refusing to seek His will in our decisions there is good reason to believe that the trial is indeed designed to get our attention. If it is and it doesn’t we can expect things to get worse. To reject, resist, or resent God’s will is dangerous. It would be far better if we would remember that”The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD..”–Psa. 37:23. God’s will is always right, best, and safest! Never say “No” to God.– HDS

WHEN GOD SAYS “NO”

March 16, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“But the LORD said to David my father, Forasmuch as it was in thine heart to build an house for my name, thou didst well in that it was in thine heart:“–2 Chron. 6:8

On several occasions I have preached a message entitled “When God Says ‘No'”. It is based on God choosing Solomon to build the temple rather than David. Although David desired to build the house of worship he was not allowed to do so. God however commended David by saying, “thou didst well in that it was in thine heart”.

I thought of that message last week when I had to make a certain painful decision. I must say, that sermon is easier to preach than practice. We can’t always do what we would like to do–regardless of how good it is. Were that the case my wife would be running an orphanage in some remote part of the world taking care of children– it is in her heart. God, however, decided to give her a different job description. And I must say she deals with it well. I tend to be more whiny when things don’t go my way. I know. That’s an embarrassing confession, but I’m trying to be honest. Sometimes we are more concerned about being pleased than we are about pleasing God.

Sometimes we can’t do what we would like because God doesn’t give us permission, but sometimes we can’t because we can’t. I recently started to write an article called “The Art of Aging” but decided that’s out of my league, for now. I don’t mind getting older, I just have a hard time adjusting to the physical limitations. I still have a desire to do things I used to do but I can’t. But I’m not alone. Many have it worse than I. At this moment there are many who have a great desire to serve God in various ways, but they can’t. There are dear saints in nursing homes, aged Sunday School teachers, and disabled preachers who have it in their heart to do things that they can’t. Their heart is willing, but their body, mind, or circumstances causes them to be unable to do what they would like to do. Not only do they have to deal with their desire being denied, they often worry about what others think–and that can be the toughest part. We should be more concerned with what God thinks about it. If you should do it you could do it.

My heart has been encouraged in this by knowing God knows it is in my heart, and that is enough to please Him. That’s all I wanted to do in the first place! What I wanted to do wasn’t important just because I had a desire to do it, but because it was pleasing to God– part of His plan for my life. Now I realize He has a different plan. It is a great blessing to know that God understands and says, “Well done”– although we didn’t do what we desired. God could have given me the ability to do what was in my heart, but He didn’t. He had a better plan and if I can’t be happy about that then I wasn’t qualified to do what I desired. So, having thought this through, I am now pleased that God is pleased with denying my desire. His will is all that matters!
