BLESS THE LORD

February 13, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” — Ps 34:1

It is not hard to bless the Lord at some times. There are days when all is bright. There is no sickness in our house. No recent sorrow has left our heart sad. It is easy then to bless the Lord.

But there are other times when things are different. Business is not prosperous. Or, health is broken. We begin to say this verse, but we cannot get through it. “I will bless the Lord at _____.”

We cannot bless the Lord for the broken health, for the empty chair. Yet there the words stand. We cannot make them read: “I will bless the Lord at some times: His praise shall be in my mouth on certain days – days when the sun shines.”

It is not our business to write Bible verses; it is our business rather to bring our lives up to the standard of the inspired words. So we must learn to say the verse just as it is written.

We must learn to bless the Lord on the dark days as well as the bright days. We must learn to praise God in pain as well as in pleasure. (J. R.Miller)

A SURE SUPPLY

February 13, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“…lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.”– Luke 22:35

The Lord will always provide for His own people, who keep His company, do His will, and aim at His glory. If He sends us, though He chooses to carry the purse, our bread shall be given, and our water shall be sure.

The disciples went out unfurnished, but then Jesus commanded them; they return, and confessed that they lacked nothing, the God of providence supplied them. If we are in the Lord’s way, we may rest assured that we shall meet the Lord’s messengers bringing our supply. They that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. He notices our wants, remembers His promises, times His mercies, and proves Himself a faithful God.

Have you lacked anything? for body? for soul? He Who has supplied the past, will provide for the future. Jesus is full of grace; go, and receive, that your joy may be full. Jesus is the God of providence; look to Him, trust in Him, plead with Him, and you shall never be destitute.

Believe His word, He cannot deny Himself; trust in His faithfulness, and He will put honour upon thy faith, fulfilling His own word. “Thy bread shall be given thee, and thy water shall be sure.” (James Smith, 1840)

His love in times past, Forbids me to think
He’ll leave me at last, In trouble to sink;
Each sweet Ebenezer I have in review
Confirms His good pleasure To help me quite through.

HE REDEEMED ME

February 13, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.”–Ex. 21:5-6

That is the law of the bond-slave and it should make us mindful of what Christ has done for us and what we should do for Him. The following story comes from an old book called ” The Preacher’s Book”, written in 1885:

The tears of a slave girl just going to be put up for sale, drew the notice of a gentleman as he passed through the auction mart of a southern slave state. The other slaves of the same group, standing in a line, for sale like herself, did not seem to care about it–while each knock of the hammer made her shiver.

The gentleman stopped to ask why she wept, and was told that the others were used to such things, and might even be glad for a change from a hard, harsh master–but that she had been brought up with much kindness by a good owner, and she was terrified to think who might buy her.

“What is her price?” the stranger asked. He stood a moment in deep thought when he heard the greatness of the ransom, but paid it nevertheless.

But no joy came to the poor slave girl’s face when he told her that she was free. She had been born a slave, and knew not what freedom meant. Her tears fell fast on the signed parchment which her deliverer brought to prove it to her. She only looked at him with fear. At last he prepared to go on his way, and as he told her what she must do when he was gone, it began to dawn on her what freedom was.

With sudden joy, she cried out, “I will follow him! I will serve him all my days!” And to every reason urged against it, she only cried, “He redeemed me! He redeemed me! He redeemed me!”

When strangers afterwards visited that master’s house, and noticed, as all did, the loving, constant service of the glad-hearted girl, and asked why she was so eager with unbidden service night and day–she had but one answer, and she loved to give it: “He redeemed me! He redeemed me!”

So may it be with us. When any note the joy in our looks, the love in our voice, the freedom of our service–we have but one answer, “He redeemed me!”

MAKE UP YOUR MIND

February 10, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“…choose you this day whom ye will serve….as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. ”—Joshua 24: 15 ( read vs.22- 28)

John Henry Jowett wrote, Here was a definite decision. Our peril is that we spend our life in wavering and we never decide. We are like a jury which is always hearing evidence and never gives a verdict. We do much thinking, but we never make up our minds. We let our eyes wander over many things, but we make no choice. Life has no crisis, no culmination.

Now people who never decide spend their days in hoping to do so. But this kind of life becomes a vagrancy and not a noble and illumined crusade. We drift through our days, we do not steer, and we never arrive at any rich and stately haven.

It is therefore vitally wise to “make a vow unto the Lord.” It is good to pull our loose thinkings together and to “gird up the loins of the mind.” Let a man, at some definite place, and at some definite moment, make the supreme choice of his life.”

James 1:8 says, “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”  He is like the Missouri Mule that starved to death while standing between two hay stacks–because he couldn’t make up his mind which one to eat from! I’ve met people like that. Many year ago a young married man surrendered to preach under my ministry in Missouri and his excitement was evident, but he could never settle on exactly what to do. One week he was going to be the next Billy Graham, the next week a pastor, and the next a missionary, etc. He seemed to have a new idea every week. That went on and on until finally he ended up getting a divorce and wasting his life. Dear friend there is great peace in knowing what you ought to do and deciding to do it. It’s time to act. As Joshua said, “choose you this day whom ye will serve“.— HDS

PRAY WITHOUT CEASING

February 10, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Pray without ceasing“– 1 Thessalonians 5:17

What is the first thing you do when you wake up? What is the last thing that you do as you go to bed? What occupies your thoughts, attention, and affections throughout each day? Is it communion with God? If not, why not?

Through the finished work of Christ on the cross we have access to, and the favor of, the only Being in the entire universe who has the wisdom we need for decisions, the strength we need for struggles, the love we need for relationships, the goodness we need for right living. When we pray, we enter into the presence of God and we commune with Him from our hearts.

The question, then, is not why Paul gives us such a difficult commandment—to pray without ceasing—but why we would not avail ourselves constantly of the single greatest opportunity that Christ’s blood has now provided us. We should pray, not to appease some vague sense of guilt or obligation, but to enjoy the great pleasures, pursue the great holiness, and enter the great presence of the Lover of our souls.

Pray to Him today. Pray to Him tomorrow. Pray to Him when you’re sad. Pray to Him when you’re exhausted. Pray to Him when you’re exuberant. Pray to Him when you feel empty and when you feel full. Pray to Him without ceasing.( Baptist Bible Hour)
