LIGHTEN THE LOAD

October 23, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,“–Heb. 12:1

In 1845, the ill-fated Franklin Expedition sailed from England to find a passage across the Arctic Ocean.

The crew loaded their two sailing ships with a lot of things they didn’t need: a 1,200-volume library, fine china, crystal goblets, and sterling silverware for each officer with his initials engraved on the handles. Amazingly, each ship took only a 12-day supply of coal for their auxiliary steam engines.

The ships became trapped in vast frozen plains of ice. After several months, Lord Franklin died. The men decided to trek to safety in small groups, but none of them survived.

One story is especially heartbreaking. Two officers pulled a large sled more than 65 miles across the treacherous ice. When rescuers found their bodies, they discovered that the sled was filled with table silver.

Those men contributed to their own demise by carrying what they didn’t need. But don’t we sometimes do the same? Don’t we drag baggage through life that we don’t need? Evil thoughts that hinder us. Bad habits that drag us down. Grudges that we won’t let go.-David C. Egner

Even sinless things can become sinful if they keep us from doing what we should. Innocent activities can divert our attention, dominate our time, and drain our energy so as to keep us from the more important things of life. We are often kept from the best by that which is good as well as what is evil. Let us then “lay aside every weight“.–HDS

THE 50th

October 22, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

The most wonderful thing in my life took place on Sunday Aug. 14, 1966 when I received Christ as my Lord and Savior. Words cannot describe how I felt when I walked out of the Community Baptist Church in Willard, Mo. on that day. It seemed like a thousand pounds had been lifted from my shoulders and the birds seemed to be singing “Amazing Grace”. I didn’t hear thunder or see lightning, but I knew a storm in my soul had ended and I had a peace unlike anything I had ever known. Then just two months and eight days later (Oct. 22) I surrendered to preach. Those two months were wonderful, but strange times. Everything was new, exciting and in some ways frighting.

Before I was saved I had stood in front of a mirror looking at myself and thinking, “There’s got to more to life than this. Surely I exist for some purpose”. After being saved I experienced a peace and joy unlike anything I’d ever known, but something still troubled me. I couldn’t help but wonder “What now? What does God want me to do?” After nearly every sermon from my pastor, regardless of the subject, I felt the need to pray and ask God for guidance. I asked the pastor if I could teach a Sunday School class and started teaching Jr. boys, driving the church bus, going on visitation twice a week, etc. but the desire to do more never went away.

Finally, as my wife and I prayed with my pastor and his wife, near midnight on Oct. 22, 1966 God made it clear to me that I was to preach His Word. I can’t explain how I felt that night, but I’ve never had any doubts about what God wanted me to do. But that’s not to say that I didn’t have questions. I couldn’t understand why God would call me to preach. I lacked knowledge, speaking ability and everything else needed to be a preacher. The only thing I had that was a positive was a strong God-given desire and a precious wife who was willing to stand by me and follow me.

I don’t have words to explain how ignorant of the Bible I was, but I was determined to learn–to learn as I was going and preaching what I learned– hoping no one asked questions about anything else. I don’t recommend that for others however. I can’t tell you how hard I studied over the next three years. I was working a full time job, involved in everything at church, studying every spare minute and preaching every chance I got. I quit hunting, fishing, playing ball, and watching TV. Meanwhile I preached at a rescue mission, pulpit supply, youth meetings and any place I could until a church called me as their pastor. I’ll never forget the first sermon I preached at the Fundamental Baptist Church in Pleasant Hope, Mo. I had been preaching for three years but never with such freedom as that day. I tremble just trying to describe it and it’s impossible to explain what God did in my spirit that day. It was like I was a different person, without making any effort to be different. I can’t explain it so I’ll just leave it at that.

Looking back I am amazed at the way God has opened doors, provided needs, and directed my steps throughout the years. To think that God could and would use someone like me is absolutely amazing. The how and why is something He alone can explain. The blessings are undeserved. They have been abundant and due to God’s grace alone. I could talk for hours about the personal experiences and for good reason, but it hasn’t been a solo journey. From beginning to end my wife has been my biggest supporter and best helper. Now after fifty years she is right where she has always been–at my side and helping every step of the way. She is deserving of far more than I could ever give her and I love her more than life itself.

While I would like to say much more, I’ll end by saying I thank God not only for my wife but for all those who have helped in various ways. They have made the journey a joy, a blessing rather than a burden and I am grateful for each and every one of them. Now as I enter my 30th year at Lakeway Baptist Church, I have no idea when it will end, I just want to live each day feeling as Paul did when he said, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain“.(Phil. 1:21) –HDS, 10/22/16

A STRANGER

October 22, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“I am a stranger in the earth.” Psalms 119:19

Beloved, we are strangers and pilgrims in the earth, as all our fathers were; our days are as a shadow, and there is no abiding. We are born from above and are bound for glory. We are distant from home, where our kindred, our treasure, and our hearts are found. Here we have no fixed residence; nor should we have any fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. We are called to submit to many inconveniences. The Bible is our light, our food, our joy, and our directory. We want a guide, a guard, a companion, a comforter; but Jesus has engaged to fill each of these offices. We should pray for the peace of the country where we sojourn; we should not be meddlers with its concerns, but keep ourselves detached, we should be thankful for every advantage, but set and keep our affections on things above; we should neither be impatient nor reluctant in reference to going home, but submit to our Father’s will; we should consider ill-treatmentas permitted to do us good; and contrast the present with our own beloved country and home.–James Smith

There is my house and portion fair,
My treasure and my heart are there,
And my abiding home;
For me my elder brethen stay,
And angels beckon me away
And Jesus bids me come.

HELL IS REAL

October 22, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:” – Matt. 25:41

Pastor Greg Laurie wrote: Often whenever the subject of judgment and hell comes up, so does this question: If God is all-loving, then why would He send people to hell?

Answer: because He is a God of love and justice. Hell was invented, if you will, for the devil and his angels. Do you think the devil deserves to go to hell? Of course he does. And if a person ends up in hell, it is because they have rejected, through their lifetime, the offer of forgiveness through Jesus Christ that required the death of the Son of God on the cross. They rejected it again and again. It is not that God sends them to hell as much as they go there voluntarily.

J. I. Packer said, “Scripture sees hell as self-chosen. . . . Hell appears as God’s gesture of respect for human choice. All receive what they actually chose, either to be with God forever, worshiping Him, or without God forever, worshiping themselves.”

Also, C. S. Lewis wrote, “There are only two kinds of people in the end: Those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’ All that are in hell, choose it. Without that self-choice, there could be no hell.”

Heaven and hell do exist. And in that final day, if you are a believer, God will say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant….enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”- Matt.25:21, 23

But if you are not a believer, God will say, “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matthew 7:23).

Everyone will meet Jesus Christ one day. It is inescapable and unavoidable. And if you don’t meet Him as Savior, then you ultimately will meet Him as Judge.

A PROPER VIEW OF SELF

October 20, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:”–Luke 18:9

The author and humorist Mark Twain was not a Christian, and his disregard for faith and the things of God were well-known. One of the things that Twain hated the most, and that helped turn him away from being saved, was the hypocrisy of professing Christians he knew. Though that does not excuse his refusal of salvation, it should serve as a warning to all of us that our conduct does have a great impact on those around us. It is said that on one occasion a prominent businessman who claimed to be a Christian but was known for unscrupulous dealings told Twain, “Before I die I mean to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I will climb Mount Sinai and read the Ten Commandments aloud at the top.” Twain responded, “I have a better idea. You could stay in Boston and keep them.”

The temptation to feel like we are doing well—or at least better than those around us—is so comforting that we often find ourselves giving in to it even though we should know better. When we evaluate our lives by the measure and standard of the expectations and commands of a perfectly holy God found in His Word, we quickly realize that we fall far short. God uses the metaphor of a mirror to describe the Bible. “For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was” (James 1:23–24). Instead of looking around for others to whom we can compare ourselves so that we feel better, we need to allow the Scriptures to perform their cleansing and correcting work in our lives. (Daily in the Word)
