200 LAUGHS

August 30, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”–Proverbs 17:22

It’s been said that the average child laughs two hundred times a day, while the typical adult laughs only four times every twenty‐four hours. So what has happened to us grown‐ups? Maybe it has something to do with those grueling hours at the office, long lines at the grocery store, and piles of bills on the kitchen counter.

Of course, life can be very difficult, and some people face serious obstacles and hardships. But many of us frown or complain over relatively minor inconveniences. I knew a woman who made herself and her husband miserable just because she had one more child than she had bedrooms in which to put them. Too many irritations come from a complete inability to appreciate the humor and blessings that exist around us. When your husband forgets to take the kids to their dentist appointment, or your wife accidentally gives away your favorite sweatshirt, or your toddler draws his version of the Mona Lisa on the living room wall—wouldn’t it be easier on everyone if you looked on the funny side of the situation?

Kevin Jones, dealing with increasing paralysis from Lou Gehrig’s disease, was asked to describe the worst thing about his condition. He replied, “My wife’s driving! She has to take me everywhere.” No matter what you’re facing, a smile can only make it better.

Just between us . . .

• How often do you laugh each day?
• Do we keep our heavenly destination in mind when adversity strikes?
• How could we add humor to the next difficult situation we face?

Dear God, when problems threaten to affect how we treat each other, help us to see them in the perspective of Your unfailing goodness. Amen.– Dr. James Dobson

A LACK OF LOVE

August 29, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“We love him, because he first loved us.“–1 John 4:19

A lack of love for the Lord is a common and serious problem. If any thing needs our full and immediate attention this is it. Observation shows us that there can be no doubt, a great many fail at this. So “How to fix it?” becomes a crucial question. While many things could be mentioned perhaps the first thing we need to realize is that, since Christ is “altogether lovely“, it is always our fault and never His. I mention this because there are a great many who try to justify their failure by blaming someone of wrong doing else–even God.

Regardless of what mysterious miseries trouble us we never have the right to blame God. What he does or doesn’t do never justifies your bitterness toward Him. Although we can rightly attribute our experience to God allowing or causing it we are not at liberty to accuse Him of being unjust, etc. So regardless of what we’re going through, if we lack love for Christ or if it has ceased to grow we have only ourselves to blame. We are guilty of allowing this to happen, regardless of how it happened. The problem must always be attributed to us and it affects us in numerous ways. We ignore it at our own peril.

The first thing we need to remember is that love for Jesus is connected with the love of Jesus. We must never forget that Christ is the first cause. We love Him because He first loved us. A person never truly loves God until they are aware and appreciative of His love for them. To increase your love for Christ you must think more about His love for you. That is not only a pleasant thing to do it is a simple, yet serious, thing. What could be more delightful than thinking about the greatness of His love for us? And, amazingly, as we delight in His love for us, we develop the capacity to love Him to a greater degree. That changes us drastically. Living in the awareness of His unconditional love we suddenly begin to love others in the same way.

SHAKING HANDS OR SAVING LIVES?

August 28, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” – John 3:36

There was a preacher who kept a painting in his study of a shipwreck. There were sailors in lifeboats reaching out their hands to people floating on debris from the ship. A little boy looked at the painting and asked his daddy, “Are those in the lifeboats trying to save those people or are they just shaking hands?”

I wonder about us. It is all right to have friends; in fact, I encourage you to do that. But are you doing more than just socializing? Wouldn’t it be a shame if all you did was shake the hands of those around you, when you could be serving and showing them the way to God through Jesus Christ?

We don’t pray, live, and witness as if people are dying and going to hell or heaven every day around us. May God have mercy on us. The need of the hour is for men and women to have a servant’s heart.–Adrian Rogers

“The early church was a lifeboat for rescuing the perishing.Today’s church is a cruise ship for pampering the prosperous”.–Leonard Ravenhill

REJECTING GOD

August 27, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.”–Luke 11:14–15

Despite all the evidence available from astronomy, the space program and history, the Flat Earth Society still exists, claiming hundreds of members. The group, which traces its roots back to the 1800s continues to promote the flat disk model of the earth that posits a world ringed by a wall of ice. No matter how many astronauts they talk to, no matter how many moon rocks they see, no matter how many pictures taken from space they are shown, they deny the reality in favor of clinging to their beliefs.

While we may be amused by people who believe the world is flat, many people in our world take the same approach to God. There is no shortage of evidence for His existence, because the very creation speaks to the need for a Creator. But people realize that acknowledging creation requires an accountability, so instead they cling to anything else, no matter how far-fetched it may be, rather than admitting that God is real.

This is not a new thing. Peter dealt with people who refused to acknowledge God. “For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water” (2 Peter 3:5). To willingly be ignorant is preferable to these people to admitting the existence of God and facing the fact that they will one day have to face Him and be judged. As Christians we have experienced the reality of God at work in our lives, and we should be not just telling but also showing those around us that He is real.(Daily in the Word)

Do you remember the old Stuart Hamlen song “It is no Secret”? My dear friend God’s existence is no secret, nor is “what He can do” a secret. There is evidence of His presence and power all around you. Pretending He doesn’t exist doesn’t make Him go away. God is real and He will be your deliverer or your judge and executioner. The choice is yours.–HDS

DO

August 26, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9

You see the perfection of the Apostle’s method. In verse 8 he has dealt with the realm of thought. Ah, but the Apostle knows the subtle danger that is always confronting us . . .
the danger of being content with theoretical knowledge,
the danger of being satisfied with doctrine only,
the danger of failing to put into practice, that which we know.

You can be a great student even of the Bible–and live a life that is utterly contrary to it!

It is the masterpiece of Satan to make us put theory and practice into separate watertight compartments–to make men so interested in the Book, that they forget to apply its teaching. “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me,” says Paul, “do“(put into practice)–Martyn Lloyd Jones

“If you know these things happy are ye if ye DO them.” John 13:17

“It is not the knowing, nor the talking, nor the reading man, but the doing man–who at last will be found the happiest man!” Thomas Watson
