COMPLAINING

July 24, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.”-– Mark 14:4-5

I recently read that last year, officials of Washington’s Reagan National Airport received more than 8,600 complaints about noise. Imagine their surprise when they discovered 6,500 of them came from the same person! Some unidentified neighbor was incensed enough to call, on average, 18 times every day of the year. Can you imagine wasting so much of your life on complaining? Sadly this bad habit reaches over into our spiritual life a well. It is so bad that some gain a reputation for it such as the woman who had surgery and when the surgeon finally emerged from the operating room and said, “Your mother is extremely critical.” Her son replied, “Don’t take it personally, doctor. She’s like that with everyone.”

J. R. Miller wrote: “It is very easy to yield to the temptation to criticize others, and find fault with their way of serving Christ. There are many motives which come in to promote this unchristian habit. We are all prone to be envious of others, and hence to form unjust opinions of what they do. One of the last graces to ripen in a Christian, is usually that of rejoicing in another’s good work. It is very hard, too, to learn our Lord’s lesson: “Do not judge–or you too will be judged.” It seems natural, too, as sad as the confession may be, for us to disparage what others do, and to underestimate it.

But we should learn the sinfulness of murmuring against others. We see how unlovely, how unChristlike, it was in these first disciples. Is it any less so in us when we allow ourselves to criticize our fellow-Christians, finding fault with the way they show their love for Christ? Even if they do not do their work as we do ours–have we a right to judge them and blame them, and speak unkind things about what they have done? Between them and their Master, rests the matter, and it is not our duty to make ourselves judges and condemners of their acts. They are responsible for what they do–not us. There are few lessons more needed than this, for there are few faults more common than that which we see here in these first disciples.”

THE GIFT OF LIFE

July 23, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”–1 Kgs 19:4

Even the best, brightest, and bravest among us are not exempt from discouragement. Who would have ever dreamed that the great Elijah would be whining like a little child, but it happened. It can happen to us also– be alert. Concerning that ancient prophet J. R. Miller wrote:

“He was sorely discouraged. It seemed to him that all he had done, had come to nothing. There are few things we need more to guard against than discouragement. When once we come under its influence, it makes us weak, robbing us of our hope and making cowards of us. Many a life is discrowned and drawn down to failure, through discouragement.

It is surely a sad picture: this greatest of the old prophets lying there under the little bush, in the wilderness, longing to die! If he had died then and there, what an inglorious ending it would have made of his life! As it was, however, he lived to do further glorious work and to see great results from his contest with idolatry. God was kinder to him, than he knew.

It is wrong to wish ourselves dead. Life is God’s gift to us, a sacred trust for which we shall have to give account. While God keeps us living–he has something for us to do. Our prayer should be for grace to do our duty bravely and well unto the end. From Elijah’s after-experience, we learn that we would never be cast down by any discouraging experiences. The things we think have failed are often only slowly ripening into rich success. We have only to be faithful to God and to duty, and we may always rejoice. What seems failure–is often best success.”

A GREAT CHURCH

July 22, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

Having just returned from the Missions Conference at Rodgers Baptist Church in Garland, Tx. my mind is filled with precious memories. I have been attending this conference for 45 years and have made a lot of friends as a result. Many of them have already gone to be with the Lord and they are greatly missed– thus precious memories. It was a special blessing to be reunited with old friends and to see that they have stayed by the stuff and are still serving the Lord. A minute with them leaves you longing for more. There was also the joy of making new friends! It is a great encouragement to meet young preachers and to see their excitement for serving God–it’s like a breath of fresh air. Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that God is still calling men to preach and that there are still young families willing to give themselves to preaching the gospel.

And, not to be forgotten, there is the sight of a church totally committed to missions. Rodgers Baptist Church has a long heritage of promoting missions and is an example for all. It is to be commended, not only for what it has done, but what it is doing. From the moment I walked in I saw old familiar faces of those who have been serving in the church for as long as I can remember. That serves to to remind you that whatever a church is it gets down to the individual members who make up the congregation. I want to thank Rodgers Baptist Church and her good pastor, Ron Thomas, for being a friend to preachers and the best promoter of missions that I know. Their example has inspired and helped many down through the years. May we all do so well! Think about it! — HDS

LISTEN TO YOURSELF

July 22, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.”– Revelation 5:13

Listen to yourself. This is you, being quoted by the apostle John, as he views the final judgment of the world and the triumphant return of Jesus Christ.

At that time, every part of His creation will bow their knees (some voluntarily  and joyfully, some involuntarily and reluctantly) and be made—by the irrepressible, undeniable glory of Jesus Christ—to declare His worthiness for all worship. No one will be able to deny His sovereign majesty in that day.

When Christ returns, you will ascribe to Him honor and glory. You will publicly recognize that all power comes from Him and so all power should be spent for Him. You will proclaim His eternal merit.

Are you living that way now? Are you honoring Him in your relationships, at your workplace, and in your private thoughts and plans? Do you see that all the strength you have—financially, emotionally, physically—comes from Christ and so it is only right that you should use it all to His glory?

If you will one day be singing the praises of Jesus Christ and heralding His infinite worthiness, why not begin doing it now? Listen to yourself!—Copied

A LIFE WORTH LIVING

July 18, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain”–Phil. 1:21

It seems mighty strange to me. A man, perhaps even a professing Christian, can spend his life in the pursuit of things that bring him pleasure, refuse to contribute to the needs of others, be unfaithful to the Lord’s church, wreck his marriage, love money, cheat others, and strive for popularity, then die and be called a “good”, “great”, or “wonderful” person. Really? Who are we kidding?

Point is–we shouldn’t live in such a way that people would have to lie in order to say something nice about us at our funeral. Rather we should invest our lives in things of eternal value rather than things that will perish. We should desire to please God rather than ourselves or others. And it will be evident when we do– no one will be wondering about what we value. Jim Elliot, martyred missionary to the Aucas in Ecuador, wrote in the flyleaf of his Bible, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” He’s talking about giving his life for Christ.

Adrian Rogers once said, “I’ll tell you, in these days the most dangerous thing you can do is to play it safe. You are safer out on the waves with Jesus Christ than you are in the boat without Him. These are desperate days, and we need to live like it. Don’t just sit there and let life pass you by! You’re going to die anyway. You can’t save your life. You’re not going to get out of it alive. And so you might as well invest it in something important.”

We need the attitude of William Carey who said, “I’m not afraid of failure. I’m afraid of succeeding at things that don’t matter”. That’s good advice. Being a success in something that is unimportant doesn’t make you a success in life. Those who spend their lives majoring on minors are failures–regardless of what they accomplish, or how wealthy or popular they are. If the end result of my life doesn’t glorify God I have missed my purpose and failed miserably in life.

They can say all manner of nice things about you, erect a marble statue on your grave, and even establish a memorial to keep your name in the lime light for a while, but the truth is — you wasted your life. It is only by living in God’s grace and for God’s glory that it can truly be said, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant“(Matt.25:21). Now that’s a life worth living! –HDS
