BATTERED BUT NOT BROKEN

December 19, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“He keepeth all His bones; not one of them is broken”   (Psalm 34:20).

This promise by the context is referred to the much afflicted righteous man: “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”( Psalm 34:19)  He may suffer skin wounds and flesh wounds, but no great harm shall be done; “not a bone of him shall be broken.” This is great comfort to a tried child of God, and comfort which I dare accept; for up to this hour I have suffered no real damage from my many afflictions. I have neither lost faith, nor hope, nor love. Nay so far from losing these bones of character, they have gained in strength and energy. I have more knowledge, more experience, more patience, more stability than I had before the trials came. Not even my joy has been destroyed. Many a bruise have I had by sickness, bereavement, depression, slander, and opposition; but the bruise has healed, and there has been no compound fracture of a bone, not even a simple one. The reason is not far to seek. If we trust in the LORD, He keeps all our bones; and if He keeps them, we may be sure that not one of them is broken. Come, my heart, do not sorrow. Thou art smarting, but there are no bones broken. Endure hardness and bid defiance to fear. –Charles Spurgeon

CONSTANT COMFORT

December 18, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“….I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”–Matt. 28:20

Others are gone and the room is empty. The lights are out and you are engulfed  in darkness. The chatter has ceased and all is silent. You are alone with your thoughts, your pain, your doubts, and your fears. And there is a sense of weakness that compels you to cry out to God for help. Thankfully, even when it seems it isn’t so, He is there–ALWAYS!

Sadly, however, we do not always sense His presence. If we can block out the sight of the sun with a penny, it is possible for us to lose sight of the Son’s presence when we are focused on painful problems. The walls seen like a prison, heaven seems as brass, and God seems afar off. What now? It is then that we must rely upon His promise that He will never leave nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5). If we are to walk by faith rather than sight we must rest in that revelation. And why not? He has never failed to keep a promise and He cannot lie.

Wherever you are, He is there– an ever present help in time of need. He is at your side and a witness of your suffering–but there is more. Not only is He a witness, He sympathizes with you in your trials. He knows how you feel (Heb. 2:18). As James Smith wrote–“His head has been racked with pain. His heart has been torn with sorrow. His mind has been overwhelmed with darkness and distress, occasioned by the hiding of His Father’s countenance. He understands what you are going through. He will treat you tenderly and lovingly”. But there is more!

As wonderful as all this is, there is something yet more wonderful. Not only does He know and care, He can help. And it helps us to know that! Being conscious of His concern is comforting, sensing His support is strengthening. Being aware that He is able and available empowers us to do what we normally couldn’t do. But there is more—

Not only does He get us through it, He creates something good out of it (Rom. 8:28). The worst thing imaginable can produce the most glorious thing possible. With this blessed assurance we are able to confront any enemy, conquer every foe, control our feelings, and continue on faithfully—in spite of the pain. Knowing that when the worst is over the best is yet to come gives us hope. Living in the awareness of these truths will get you through any day, and one day at a time is all we ever need to be concerned about (Matt. 6:34). You won’t face anything today that God can’t get you through, and the same holds true for every day to come. Think about it!

BE NOT AFRAID

December 17, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.” John 6:20

The fears of the Christian are a dishonour to his Lord, a denial of his creed, and a fruitful source of distress to his own soul. All things are of God, He worketh all things after the counsel of His own will, and in every event He says to us, “IT IS I; BE NOT AFRAID.” If friends turn to foes and distress us, if death enters our dwellings and bereaves us, if sickness lays us aside and fills us with pain, He says, “It is I; be not afraid.” If losses, crosses, and sore trials come upon us, and discourage, distress, and perplex us, He says, “It is I; be not afraid.” If death approaches, and calls upon us to leave the body and close our eyes upon our beloved relations, friends, and connexions, He says, “It is I; be not afraid.” Should we hear the pillars of heaven crack, and feel the strong foundation of the earth give way; should the heavens be rolled up like a scroll, and the great white throne appear; still, amidst the wreck of matter and the crash of worlds, He cries, “Be not afraid; it is I.” Happy Christian! thy fears are groundless and thy brightest hopes well founded. Rejoice in Jesus.(James Smith)

O that I might so believe,
Steadfastly to Jesus cleave;
Only on His love rely,
Smile at the destroyer nigh:
Free from care and servile fear,
Feel the Saviour always near.

LIVING IN THE LIGHT

December 16, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.”–Matthew 4:16

I woke up this morning to the sound of rain and the absence of light. After fumbling around with a flashlight I finally found a candle. So I sat in my recliner with only a flickering candle to illuminate the room and a vivid imagination of what it must have been like in “the old days”. What was a minor inconvenience to me was a way of life for folks back then. How blessed we are to have light! As soon as the electricity came on a started checking devotions that I read everyday and couldn’t believe how many related to the subject of light–it was amazing. Then I started to read my emails and sure enough the theme continued. The second one was “Turning Point” which related the following story:

“If you’re planning a Christmas trip to Tromsø, Norway, don’t pack your sunglasses. Between November and January the sun never rises there. This town, which sits on an island about the size of Manhattan, is the second-most populated place north of the Arctic Circle. Every fall, its 70,000 residents face the prospect of spending the winter in perpetual polar night.

Would you find it difficult to live where the sun never rises? In a spiritual sense, that’s where we’re living now. This world is spiritually dark, and its inhabitants are blinded to the truth. Every morning they awaken to darkness, failing to recognize Him who said: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12).

We have what the world needs—the light of the world, Jesus Christ. Let your character and conduct reflect Him today. The Bible says, “ Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;” (Philippians 2:14-15).

THE LORD EVER-PRESENT

December 15, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

Last Sunday I preached from 2 Tim. 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” That verse has been one of my favorites for many years, for good reason. The world is a dangerous place and facing fear is a common thing. That’s why it is crucial that we remember Christ and what He what has provided—“power..love, and.. a sound mind.” But we also need to be reminded that we have these things because Christ Himself is within us and He is “greater” than any enemy we will ever face. Think about that for a while and it will give you courage to face the day.

Adrian Rogers wrote, “The One who created the valley is there with you! He has prepared the way through the valley. It is not a place of permanence, but a place of passage. He knows every twist and turn, every changing shadow, every den where danger lurks—that One is with you!

Focus on the light and not the darkness. God has made you to walk through shadows. When the shadow approaches, you must walk through. The One greater than death is in you! He is your Jehovah Shamah—the Lord ever-present. His grace is greater. His peace is purer. His devotion is dearer. Where Satan casts a shadow, our Sovereign Lord reigns supreme.

This is a day of hope. Meditate on 1 John 4:4 throughout the day and ask God to give you a divine appointment to share this beloved truth with someone today.”
