FROM PAIN TO PRAISE

July 14, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”–Revelation 21:4

It is for good reason that Christians like to sing about heaven–our home is there and as our dear Bro. Nolan sings, “Heaven is better than this“. Till the day I die I’ll never forget hearing Bro. Earl Smith of High Street Baptist Church sing, “Until Then“. Maybe you ought to grab the hymn book and read the words right now. Dear friend we aren’t promised an easy life on earth, but we are assured of a glorious home in heaven–where there will be no more tears.

Turning Point magazine said, “According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2,513,171 people died in America in 2011 from all causes. On average, 6,885 people died every day; 287 people every hour; 5 people every minute; one person every 12 seconds. In the time it takes you to read this devotional 5 to 10 people will die in America. At this moment, tears are being shed somewhere over the pain of loss. And that’s just in America, which represents only 8.5 percent of the world’s population. Is it any wonder Paul spoke of creation groaning for freedom (Romans 8:20-22)?

All of us will shed tears of pain and loss and grief at some time in life. But a day is coming when all those tears will be wiped away and will never be seen again. The sounds of pain will be replaced by the sounds of praise to the One who has redeemed us from a fallen world and ushers us into a new heaven and new earth.

If you are shedding tears of loss today, ask God to help you transition from pain to praise for the One who knows your every tear.”

There is a land of pure delight, where saints immortal reign; infinite day excludes the night, and pleasures banish pain.–Isaac Watts

SERIOUSLY!

July 13, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen”– Matt. 28:19-20

Sir Isaac Newton, the English mathematician and physicist, is considered by many to be the greatest scientist who ever lived. He was accorded the honor of being the first scientist to be buried in Westminster Abbey.

The well-known story relates that, on seeing an apple fall in his orchard sometime during 1665 or 1666, Newton conceived that the same force governed the motion of the moon and the apple. He calculated the force needed to hold the moon in its orbit, as compared with the force pulling an object to the ground. And that’s how he discovered gravity!

Seriously, what you may not know is that it seems to have been due to the influence and tact of Sir Edmund Halley at his visit in November, 1684, that Newton undertook to attack the whole problem of gravitation, and practically pledged himself to publish his results: these are contained in the Principia.  The printing of the work was slow, and it was not published until the summer of 1687. The cost was borne by Halley, who also corrected the proofs, and even put his own research aside to press the printing forward. Historians call it one of the most selfless examples in the annals of science.

Newton began almost immediately to reap the rewards of prominence, while Halley received little credit for his work.  But he is known for discovering the comet named after him, which appears briefly every 76 years. However, one profound biographical fact regarding Halley stated that he didn’t care who received credit for discoveries—his single mission in life was to advance the cause of science . . . and he did.

It seems there is an ever-growing problem in the church today, stemming from confusion surrounding our mission in this world. Why exactly are we here? The members of the early church seemed to have had this answer figured out. Gibbon noted in his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire that the most sacred duty of the new convert was to diffuse among his friends and relatives the blessing which he had received. Harnack, another church historian, wrote that the great mission of Christianity was accomplished by means of casual missionaries.

Why has it become so difficult in our own society to determine why we are here? George Barna, in his book What Americans Believe, revealed the results of a survey of people claiming to be born-again believers. When asked, “Do you have a responsibility to explain your religious beliefs to others who may believe differently?” less than 45% answered affirmatively.

This is a far cry from the passion and fervency displayed by our brothers and sisters who have gone before us, living and dying to advance the gospel. They took the great commission seriously . . . and it didn’t matter who got the credit.

Have you committed your life to advancing the cause of Christ?  Think about it . . . seriously!

If you do not come in close contact with unbelievers on a regular basis, then pray that God will bring someone into your life with whom you can share the Gospel. If you already have relationships with those who are unsaved, pray that God will not only open doors of opportunity for you to witness, but that He will give you boldness when that time comes.(Stephen Davey)

YOU CAN TRUST THE BIBLE

July 12, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Every word of God is pure…”– Proverbs 30:5

When you watch a play, read books, take in a movie, or even converse with friends, you must have the filter on. Is this worldview right? Are these ideas true? Is this lesson correct? Is the moral of this story actually moral?

But when we come to the Word of God, all the filters must come off. The reason why is that there is no filter—our own ideals, the best philosophies, the most scientific theories—that is as pure as the Word of God itself. If we filter the words of God through our own understanding, then we contaminate, rather than purify, the ideas which are conveyed.

Every word of God is pure. There is not a drop of foolishness in the ocean of God’s revelation. There is not a single falsehood within the many pages of the Bible. Every word of God is trustworthy because every word of God is true.

How do you read your Bible? Do you read it with the filter of your own wisdom, desires, and preconceptions? Or are you allowing the unadulterated word of God to wash over your receptive soul, cleansing it of every prejudice, personal ambition, and sinful ideology?

God’s Word should be a set of glasses through which we view all the rest of the world — music, psychology, biology, journalism, business practices, college lectures, or retirement plans. Anything else is just one fallen head influencing another fallen head.–Baptist Bible Hour

BATTLING BITTERNESS

July 11, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;”-Heb. 12:15

The blight of bitterness is an awful thing. It doesn’t just make us miserable, it is terribly destructive. Yet many act as though it is no big deal and dismiss it with the wave of a hand. Watching people try to deny or hide bitterness would be funny were it not so serious. They don’t seem to realize that bitterness colors every area of their life.

The characteristics of bitterness are many, such as sourness, moodiness, rudeness, ingratitude, complaining, impatience, anger, holding grudges, evil speaking, etc. These are things that do not go unnoticed for very long. It is common to see folks with these problems and wonder what’s wrong with them–the answer is “bitterness”. They are so burdened by bitterness that they can’t enjoy the beauty of a sunset, the laughter of a child, or the embrace of a loved one. Nothing makes them happy.

In the battle against bitterness it helps to consider the cause—things such as resentment toward God or man for failing to fulfill our expectations, unresolved anger, unforgiveness, etc. Although we would like to blame someone else, the fact is, it is our sin that causes us to get bitter. We might be bitter toward them but it is because of us. People can and will mistreat you, but they cannot make you bitter–that is a choice you alone can make.

It also helps us to consider the consequences— the harm it does. If you don’t see the danger you won’t see the problem, nor take any corrective measures to fix it, and things will go from bad to worse. The Greek word translated “bitterness” was used to describe plants that produced fruit that was poisonous and inedible. In addition to making us miserable, bitterness causes us to treat others as Satan treats us. We become a tool in his workshop! Thus, we are useless to God.

What a horrible way to spend your life! And some have been in that sad state for years, and it is there for all to see. For others it is a root, underground and hidden from view. However, unless dealt with, it will grow and grow until it springs up. Consequently we should deal with it as soon as possible. The longer we linger the greater the danger. Some are so blinded and bound by bitterness that they can’t hardly function–all because they delayed in dealing with it.

So what is the cure? How can we rid ourselves of this sad situation? The late Adrian Rogers suggested these three things:

1. Let God reveal it– Ps. 139:23-24

2. Let grace remove it– Heb. 12:15

3. Let good replace it– Heb. 12:14

That is good advice. This is not a terminal illness that can’t be cured. Bitterness is something we can do something about. There is no need for any of us to enslaved by such a dreadful thing. We have a choice. We can choose to get bitter or choose to get better.

JUDGING OURSELVES

July 10, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”–Matthew 7:3-5

A pastor was once speaking at a large conference in Washington. Being the main speaker, his sessions were always full and everyone was very attentive, except for one man. One man always sat in the same seat in the front row of his sessions, and halfway into the sermon he would fall asleep. The first time it happened, the pastor thought the man had experienced a tough day of driving to get to the conference and accidently fell asleep. But night after night the same thing happened. Annoyed by the occurrence, the pastor had developed a bitter spirit toward this man. After the conference, the man’s wife approached the pastor and apologized for the man’s actions. As she explained, he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and the new medicine made him drowsy. But his one wish was to hear that pastor preach before he died, so they had made the long, painful journey to be at the conference.

Notice the parable Christ gives in today’s verses: “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” How often have we judged others about sins or shortcomings that are in our lives as well? Why can’t we see our own failures before seeing those of others?

Many times we ignore sin in our lives because we don’t want to deal with the sin. It’s easier to see the problems that other people have rather than dealing with our own problems. If we were honest with ourselves, we probably have more problems than the people we judge!

Notice the symbolism Jesus uses. While a mote refers to a dry stalk or twig, a piece of grass, or a straw; a beam refers to a large plank of wood, similar to a 2×4. Christ says, “While you’re scrutinizing the small issues of other people, there are large looming sins in your own life!”

Much of this teaching was aimed at the religious leaders of the day, those who wanted to point out the minor inconsistencies of the Jewish people while overlooking their blind ignorance of God’s Word. Christ pointed out that rather than judging others, they needed to be judging themselves.

Do you sometimes act like the Pharisees, pointing out the sins of others while ignoring sin in your life? Have you become accustomed to judging others without judging yourself? Take time today to open your heart before God and let Him judge you. Lay out your actions, thoughts, and motives before Him and pray as the Psalmist, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts” (Psalm 139:23). The next time you’re tempted to point out someone else’s sins or failures, be reminded of your own shortcomings and pray that God will help both of you.(Daily in the Word)
