THE RIGHT ROAD

October 27, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established . Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.” — Prov. 4:26-27

Have you ever made a wrong turn? I bet you have. And I bet you would agree that the quicker you find out the better it is. Several years ago I turned in the wrong direction and drove over 30 minutes before I discovered my error. Since the plan was to be on the lake fishing before sunrise, by the time I got to the lake it was well past daybreak. While it might be that you haven’t wasted that much time by taking a wrong turn, I doubt that anyone can say they’ve never taken a wrong turn. Whether you traveled a few blocks or many miles it wasn’t something you want to repeat. But, wrong turns can happen in ways other than driving. You can apply this to many different areas of life.

Some folks could stand and testify that one wrong turn changed the course of their life for the rest of their life—- they married the wrong person, took the wrong job, made the wrong investment, etc. Point is—we can do somethings that we can’t ever undo. In other cases, after a wrong turn the consequences could be avoided if correction is made in time. There’s an old song called, “I’m on the right road now”. I wish that was true of everyone. Sadly some people have failed to correct their course and they are still on the wrong road.

How is it with you? Did you take a wrong turn? Are you on the right road? Have you considered where the road will lead? Have you thought about how you got on the wrong road— error in judgment, outright rebellion, following someone else,? Have you thought about what you need to do to get back on the right track? One more question– When will you do it?  I can assure you, the sooner the better! While how it happened might be important as related to how you get back on track, it shouldn’t stop you from doing so. If you are wrong nothing should stop you from getting right. It would be foolish for you to stay on the wrong road because someone wronged you, misled you, or joined with you. Regardless of how you got there, the consequences are the same. If you don’t turn around you will make a wreck of your life, and the chances are that you won’t be the only one who gets hurt. Think about where you’re headed and correct your course before it is too late. Think about it! Please!

REMARKS TO REMEMBER

May 28, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country, in defense of us, in wars far away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and gray haired. But most of them were boys when they died, and they gave up two lives — the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for our country, for us. And all we can do is remember.——-

And the living have a responsibility to remember the conditions that led to the wars in which our heroes died. Perhaps we can start by remembering this: that all of those who died for us and our country were, in one way or another, victims of a peace process that failed; victims of a decision to forget certain things; to forget, for instance, that the surest way to keep a peace going is to stay strong. Weakness, after all, is a temptation — it tempts the pugnacious to assert themselves — but strength is a declaration that cannot be misunderstood. Strength is a condition that declares actions have consequences. Strength is a prudent warning to the belligerent that aggression need not go unanswered.

Peace fails when we forget what we stand for. It fails when we forget that our Republic is based on firm principles, principles that have real meaning, that with them, we are the last, best hope of man on Earth; without them, we’re little more than the crust of a continent. Peace also fails when we forget to bring to the bargaining table God’s first intellectual gift to man: common sense. Common sense gives us a realistic knowledge of human beings and how they think, how they live in the world, what motivates them. Common sense tells us that man has magic in him, but also clay. Common sense can tell the difference between right and wrong. Common sense forgives error, but it always recognizes it to be error first.

We endanger the peace and confuse all issues when we obscure the truth; when we refuse to name an act for what it is; when we refuse to see the obvious and seek safety in Almighty. Peace is only maintained and won by those who have clear eyes and brave minds. Peace is imperiled when we forget to try for agreements and settlements and treaties; when we forget to hold out our hands and strive; when we forget that God gave us talents to use in securing the ends He desires. Peace fails when we forget that agreements, once made, cannot be broken without a price.—— Thank you. God bless you all, and God bless America.   THINK ABOUT IT!

MAKING MARVELOUS MEMORIES

October 26, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“ And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded ; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.” 1 Samuel 12:2
Like most people my age, I occasionally think about the faults and failures of my past and wish I had done better. Although I can’t change the past, I can learn from it and use it to help others– if they will give heed. I’ve often said, someday some young person will decide to listen to and learn from their elders, without thinking they must experience things for themselves, and it will make a world of difference. So with that in mind, here is some great advice from the pen of the late J. R. Miller— hopefully “some young person” will read and heed this:

“Old age is the test of life. It is the harvest of all the life’s sowing. In its evening shadows, the deeds of all the past years appear at their real value. All life’s memories gather about the old man’s last days, and make either sweetness or bitterness for him. It is a great thing to be able to stand up in old age, and face all one’s past without a blush, and challenge everyone to witness if anything wrong is known.

Nothing but well-lived years all along life’s way, can yield such a happy consciousness in old age. We must begin in early youth—to grow old; that is, to grow into the beauty and sweetness which we all want to have in our character, when we become old. If we would be able to face our own past without blushing, when we reach seventy years—we must not do anything during the seventy years that we shall be ashamed to face. If we would be able to challenge the scrutiny of the world, turning the light on every chapter of our life, every page and line—we must be careful that we leave nothing behind us as we go on, which anyone can bring up against us. It was because that from a child, Samuel had served God, and had been exemplary in his conduct—honest, faithful, and upright in all his dealings—that he could now so confidently appeal to his record.”

EFFEMINATE CHRISTIANITY

May 25, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

In this age of confusion and corruption, the following message by Horatius Bonar (1809-89), written in 1864, is greatly needed today. Many will go to almost any length to excuse their rebellion against God, even if it means redefining sin and revising God’s Word to such an extent that love for God and obedience to God isn’t necessary for righteous living. That is a far cry from the Christianity of the Bible. Please read on:

Beware of Effeminate Christianity

For there is some danger of falling into a soft and effeminate Christianity, under the plea of a lofty and ethereal theology. Christianity was born for endurance…It walks with firm step and erect frame; it is kindly, but firm; it is gentle, but honest; it is calm, but not facile; obliging, but not imbecile; decided, but not churlish. It does not fear to speak the stern word of condemnation against error, nor to raise its voice against surrounding evils, under the pretext that it is not of this world.

It does not shrink from giving honest reproof lest it come under the charge of displaying an unchristian spirit. It calls sin ‘sin,’ on whomsoever it is found, and would rather risk the accusation of being actuated by a bad spirit than not discharge an explicit duty. Let us not misjudge strong words used in honest controversy. Out of the heat a viper may come forth; but we shake it off and feel no harm.

The religion of both Old and New Testaments is marked by fervent outspoken testimonies against evil. To speak smooth things in such a case may be sentimentalism, but it is not Christianity. It is a betrayal of the cause of truth and righteousness. If anyone should be frank, manly, honest, cheerful (I do not say blunt or rude, for a Christian must be courteous and polite), it is he who has tasted that the Lord is gracious, and is looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God.

I know that charity covereth a multitude of sins; but it does not call evil good, because a good man has done it; it does not excuse inconsistencies, because the inconsistent brother has a high name and a fervent spirit. Crookedness and worldliness are still crookedness and worldliness, though exhibited in one who seems to have reached no common height of attainment.

Before you jump on the band wagon of some popular preacher with a Hollywood smile and nothing but nice things to say, you better think about it. Any man who ignores or distorts the truth is not your friend. Before you set out to follow someone like that you had better consider where it will lead you.

NEVER FORGOTTEN OR FORSAKEN

October 25, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee– Isaiah 49:15

“Have you ever felt forsaken, forgotten, or overlooked? Have you ever had your closest friends, and even family, let you down?

As unthinkable as it may seem, as unnatural as it clearly is, it is possible even for a mother to forget or neglect her nursing baby. She may become frustrated, or exhausted; or she may simply put herself first and not consider the needs of her infant baby. There have been shocking accounts in the national news lately of mothers who even harmed their own infant children for selfish reasons.

But God speaks this unalterable, unmistakable promise: even if your own mother were to turn against you, or forget you, yet He will never forget you. Although in a fallen and sinful world, parents may neglect or abuse their children, God will always nurture and prosper and provide for His.

What a comfort to hear these words from our heavenly Father! Though circumstances may deteriorate, though fathers may disappoint, though friends may forsake, God will never let you go. He is the perfect, protective parent.

There is no trial that faces you, no temptation that overtakes you, no problem that afflicts you without God’s loving hand embracing you. Fall into His ever-present, compassionate embrace today and rest in the fact that He will never leave you or forsake you.”–Baptist Bible Hour

But suppose the very worst was to happen. What then? Well, here is a promise for that—“When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up . ” Psalm 27:10

J. R. Miller commented: “We all know how much our father and mother love us. It seems to us there never could be a stronger love than theirs. No matter how wickedly a son may act, the love in his father’s and mother’s heart, still continues tender and faithful. Though all the world turn him out-of-doors, the ‘home door’ still stands open for him.

But this verse tells us that even if parental love is worn out, and parental patience exhausted, and the home door shut in one’s face—there is still a place in God’s heart and home for the outcast! This is the verse for the man or the woman who has gone down to the lowest depths of shame, until even his mother—if this is possible—has given him up and shut him out of her heart!

God’s love outlasts human love.

This is also the orphan’s verse. When God removes father and mother, He Himself takes up the child in special love and care. Very desolate is the world, when both father and mother are gone. Life is never the same again. There is no place to go with the heart’s hunger, and with the burden that is too heavy. Yet God remains, and in the loss of the human, there are first revealed, ofttimes, the warmth, tenderness, faithfulness, and help of the divine love.

Cast all your care on God—that anchor holds!“
