CARTER–CONFUSED AND CORRUPT

March 22, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Well I just read another article about Jimmy Carter. Yep,you guessed it–it made me sick! Actually it made me angry. So, I decided to write an article. After considering all the things that could be mentioned–support of abortion, belief that gay marriage is fine, that’s it’s time to have a gay president, etc.,etc., I decided there are too many issues to deal with. So, I’ll just mention one, because it explains all the others.

As you might already know, the former president (Wow! Hard to imagine) is touring to promote his latest book— his own study Bible! Really! It’s called, “NIV Lessons from Life Bible: Personal Reflections with Jimmy Carter”. It “contains the full text of the New International Version of the Bible and the former president’s prayers, reflections, and asides”. Sadly this corrupt version and this confused man will rake in millions. Now consider this.

When Paul Raushenbush, senior religion editor of “The Huffington Post”, asked Carter if he believed the Bible is God’s word, Carter answered,” the basic principles of the Bible are taught by God, but written down by human beings deprived of modern day knowledge. So there is some fallibility in the writings of the Bible—There are many verses in the Bible that you could interpret very rigidly, and that makes you ultimately into a fundamentalist”.

Well that explains why he does what he does. When you deny the infallibility of the Bible you leave the door open for every whacked-out, off-the-wall, nut-case view point imaginable. Without the infallible Word of God to depend upon we have no sure standard by which to live. Naturally that leads to people like Carter spewing their personal opinions out on gullible people who believe them to be true. That’s sad indeed!

We have had leaders who were ignorant, lots of them, and leaders who were wicked, and at least one who is both! It is not a minor matter when someone seeks to pervert God’s Word and leads people into believing that sin isn’t sin. This is the same guy who tried to divide and destroy the SBC by calling for a new and more liberal Baptist convention in 2008, which he said constitute an “historic event for the Baptists in this country and perhaps for Christianity”. If that isn’t oozing with pride I don’t what is. I just wish to God that he would stop calling himself a Christian and a Baptist–he is neither. And, he’s not alone! There are multitudes who espouse the same view points and they are not silent about it. Neither should we remain silent in denouncing them. Think about it!

SIN AND ITS EFFECT

October 14, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels“– Psalm 81:12

Sin results in separation from God. But here we are also reminded that it means being joined completely to our own desires and schemes.

At first glance, this might not sound so bad. While we certainly don’t want to be separated from God, the thought of being married to our own desires and plans doesn’t seem to be much of a penalty. Isn’t that more like a dream come true?

In reality this is judgment; this is punishment. Those who persist in sin and rebellion, God leaves to their own lust and allows them to walk in their own counsels. But notice that it does not say that the lust is fulfilled, or that the plans prosper.

When God gives a person up to his own lusts, his lusts consume him without end, because there is no true or lasting or deep satisfaction apart from God. It is to forever hunger, without ever being filled.

Similarly, the person who is left to her own counsel finds that she is like a blind person at the street corner, without a guide. She is free to walk any direction she pleases, but there is danger and destruction on every side.–Baptist Bible Hour

“TELL ME THE STORY ONE MORE TIME”

March 21, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

I just finished reading this article on the blog by Tim Challies and thought you might enjoy it.

Reading Michael Wittmer’s excellent new book The Last Enemy, I came across a powerful little story that I wanted to share with you. I trust you will enjoy it as I did.

My friend Jeff stopped by the hospital to visit one of his dearest senior saints. Charlotte was in her eighties, but she had been young enough in heart to blossom under Jeff’s ministry. She had paid close attention as Jeff proclaimed the story of God—how the world began with God’s good creation, suffered a cataclysmic fall that ruined us and everything else, is being redeemed by Jesus’ cross and resurrection, and will be consummated when Jesus returns and delivers this world to His Father.

Charlotte said learning God’s story had changed her life. “I get it now,” she told anyone who would listen. “The parts of the Bible make sense when you read them in light of the whole. For the first time in my life, I understand how my salvation fits into the larger picture.”

Now Charlotte was dying. She chatted with her pastor about family, church, and the general quality of hospital food, and then Jeff said a prayer and promised to come see her again.

Jeff was minutes from home when his cell phone rang. It was the floor nurse calling from the hospital.

“Charlotte told me to contact you,” she began. “She said that it’s time for her to die. She told me to tell you not to hurry; she’ll wait until you get here.”

Jeff turned his car around and drove slightly faster than Charlotte had recommended. He feared she would die before he returned, and he prayed God would grant her sufficient stamina to hold on. He need not have worried. When he entered her room, panting from his swift jog from the parking garage, Charlotte called him over to her bed. She took his hand, looked into his eyes, and said, “Pastor, tell me the story one more time.”

For the next twenty minutes, with a heavy but grateful heart, Jeff reviewed the story that had saved their lives. He told Charlotte about their gracious, triune God who created our world from love and for His glory. He reminded her that God put us here as His “image bearers” to take care of this world on His behalf (see Genesis 1:26-28). God intended us to flourish in all of our relationships—with Him, one another, and creation—and we would as long as we rested in His care and obeyed His loving will.

Jeff then described the destruction of the fall and how our rebellion against the one, true, and living God had shattered everything we were meant to be. We rejected God’s love, fought with each other, and brought a curse upon the entire creation. We were doomed, unwilling and unable to take the first step toward reconciliation. We were “without hope and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12).

Jeff and Charlotte remembered how God refused to let the world end this way, and He sent His Son to rescue us from sin and death. Jesus offered His sinless life in our place, absorbing the wrath of God that we deserved so we could be adopted as the righteous children of God. Our loving Lord was crucified, dead, and buried, but three days later He shocked the world by rising from the dead.

Jesus ascended to heaven where He rules the world and intercedes for us before our merciful Father. He will soon return to make all things new. He will restore our humanity, repairing our relationships with God, each other, and creation. And He will bring joy to the world, far as the curse is found, by abolishing sin, disease, and death. No more tearful goodbyes! Because Jesus lives, we too shall live—with Him, here, glorifying God and enjoying Him forever!

Jeff’s voice cracked and Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears. “It’s true,” she whispered. “I know it’s true.” She smiled, and then cleared her throat and asked, “Pastor, will you call for the nurse?”

When the nurse entered the room, Charlotte said with resolute voice, “Nurse, I’d like a clean robe and I’d like my teeth.” She turned to Jeff and patted his arm, “It’s time. It’s going to be okay.”

Jeff left the room while the nurse dressed Charlotte in a white robe and put her teeth in, and when she was ready, Jeff returned, took her hand, and kissed her on the forehead. As Jeff prayed beside her, Charlotte raised her eyes toward heaven, and with a serenity that comes from knowing how the story ends, she repeated the words “thank you, thank you, thank you.” By the third “thank you” she had fallen asleep, and on the fourth she was waking up in heaven.

STRENGTH FOR THE DAY

October 13, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“…as thy days, so shall thy strength be. “ Deuteronomy 33:25

It is easy to imagine a trial of some sort that, to our mind, would be more than we are able to bear– to envision a situation that would be more than we are able to cope with. Feelings tell us “that would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back”. What we forget is that sufficient grace doesn’t arrive until the time of its need. That’s why we must live by faith rather than feelings. Peace is possible only if we take one day at a time.

J. R. Miller wrote,”Strength was not promised in advance–enough for all of life, or even for a year, or for a month. The promise was, that for each day, when it came with its own needs, duties, battles, and griefs–enough strength would be given. As the burden increased–more strength would be imparted. As the night grew darker–the lamps would shine out more brightly.

The important thought here is, that strength is not emptied into our hearts in bulk–a supply for years to come–but is kept in reserve, and divinely given day by day, just as the day’s needs require.”

“Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11

“In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.” Psalm 138:3

HIP- HIP- HOORAY FOR HONESTY

March 16, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

I just read about a man who found a bag of money containing $7,000 while cleaning the streets in Alvin, Texas, and returned it! The doughnut shop owner who lost it was delighted and “shocked that someone was still honest”. The man who found it said the money was not worth more than his honor. I say “Hip-Hip-Hooray!” to a man who is so honest.

Reading this story reminded me of an incident that happened a couple weeks ago. As Bev and I was leaving a store she spotted a purse someone had left in a shopping cart. She picked up the lost purse and turned it in immediately. You can bet that the owner of the purse was surprised and happy. Another woman standing nearby, watching the scene unfold, had a shocked look on her face and she expressed her amazement that someone actually would return the purse.

Here’s the point–not everyone is a thief! There are a few honest and caring people in the world. It’s the fallen stars that get the most attention. Think about it–with millions of stars over-head staying true to their orbit, it is the fallen star that distracts us from their beauty. Even so, in the news world today it is mainly the bad news that makes the headlines. Don’t let the bad behavior of a few sour your attitude toward everyone else.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said,” If the stars appeared only one night every thousand years how we would marvel and appreciate them”. How true. Even so, the rarity of honesty, and other virtues, should get our attention and gain our appreciation. Next time you see someone do a good deed don’t let it go unnoticed. Expressing your admiration and appreciation can encourage people to do more of the same. Think about it!
