GEORGE MATHESON

September 8, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

The Scottish preacher, George Matheson (1842-1906) was a remarkable man. I’ll never forget the first time I read his story many years ago–I was blessed beyond measure! Over the years I accumulated several quotes from him that I carry in my Bible case and refer to time and time again. In this article I have put some of these quotes together to acquaint you with this man, with the hopes that you too will be blessed.
HIS DIFFICULTIES
George Matheson is probably best known for writing the hymn,”O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go”. It was written on the eve of his sister’s marriage and after the most heartbreaking event of his life.
Before he lost his sight Matheson was engaged to a young lady that he loved dearly. When he discovered that in a short time he would permanently lose his sight, he told his fiancee the bad news. Her reply was–“Why, George, I couldn’t be tied to a blind man the rest of my life”. The engagement was broken off and George went blind while studying for the ministry. But out of that awful experience came the wonderful hymn that has blessed so many.
HIS SONG
In his deep sorrow Matheson wrote these words:
“O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in Thee;
I give Thee back the life I owe,
That in Thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.”
HIS PRAYER
“My God, I have never thanked Thee for my thorns. I have thanked Thee a thousand times for my roses, but not once for my thorns. I have been looking forward to a world where I shall get compensation for my cross: but I have never thought of my cross as itself a present glory. Teach me the glory of my cross; teach me the value of my thorn. Shew me that I have climbed to Thee by the path of pain. Shew me that my tears have made my rainbow.
Thou wouldest not have me accept Thy will because I must, but because I may. Thou wouldest have me take it, not with resignation, but with joy; not with the absence of a murmur, but with a song of praise.”
HIS COUNSEL
“There are some songs which can only be learned in the valley. No art can teach them; no rules of voice can make them perfectly sung. Their music is in the heart. They are songs of memory, of personal experience—–
St. John says that even in Heaven there will be songs that can only be fully sung by the sons of earth–the strain of redemption. Doubtless it is a song of triumph, a hymn of victory to the Christ who made us free—-
No angel, no archangel can sing it so sweetly as I can. To sing it as I sing it, they must pass through my exile, and this they cannot do. None can learn it but the children of the cross.
There are chords too minor for the angels. There may be heights in the symphony which are beyond the scale–heights which angels alone can reach; but there are depths which belong to thee, and can only be touched by thee.
In the night He is preparing thy song. In the valley He is tuning thy voice. In the cloud He is deepening thy chords. In the rain He is sweetening thy melody. In the cold He is molding thy expression. In the transition from hope to fear He is perfecting thy lights. Despite not thy school of sorrow, O my soul; it will give thee a unique part in the universal song.”
HIS POEM
“There is an eye that never sleeps,
Beneath the wings of night.
There is an ear that never shuts
When sink the beams of light.
There is an arm that never tires
When human strength gives way.
There is a love that never fails
When earthly loves decay.”

STRENGTH AND ENCOURAGEMENT

July 21, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me – Philippians 4:13

It is not uncommon in human experience to run up against things that are bigger than we are, that we simply cannot overcome in our own strength. It may be a lust that threatens to consume us, an addiction that repeatedly overcomes us, a resentment that is growing inside us, or a sorrow that seems to paralyze us.

It is also not uncommon to try to grit our teeth, hunch our backs, and seek to make it through by shear determination. We tell ourselves we can overcome if we just try hard enough. Isn’t that what being a good Christian means?

Yet here is the mighty apostle Paul admitting that his strength does not come from himself, or from his own willpower. He is not trying to do it on his own. Rather, he is looking to Jesus Christ for the power and deliverance he needs.

How can you make it through this trial? Through Christ. How can you overcome that temptation or addiction? Through Christ. How can you rise above your grief or depression? Through Christ. There is nothing that you cannot do through the strength that Christ has promised to you. Turn to Him, beloved, and find for yourself the confidence, the joy, the strength that Paul found through Christ. –Baptist Bible Hour

A SPECIAL DAY !

September 6, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

I know, I’ve got a bad habit of using superlatives too often. Naturally when speaking of God we can never over-do it, but such isn’t the case concerning other matters. However, that being said, when I say yesterday was “a special day” I’m not exaggerating the least bit. It was totally AWESOME!
Although every Sunday is “special”, even though some people don’t think of it as such, this one was different. To start with it was special to Bev and I because we each had one of our sisters visiting from Missouri. Bev’s sister, Shirley, had been here before and many of you know her, but my sister, Linda, had not visited us since we moved from Missouri 35 years ago. It has been a joy having them with us. But this day was special for other reasons also.
Two things happened that made this a day to remember. First, one of our faithful men, a man active in our music ministry, was saved and baptized–that is always awesome! Secondly, a young lady from Russia made a public profession of faith in Christ and was baptized. She will soon be returning home to Russia, but she will never be forgotten.
I’ll never forget the day LeAnna showed up at our church. It’s not everyday that someone from Russia, without any transportation other than a bike, shows up on your door-step. In case you haven’t noticed—God works in strange ways!
I won’t try to tell the whole story, but I’m not stretching the truth when I say it is amazing. God used some of His people to provide LeAnna and her friend Christina a place to stay, a job, and a car to drive. Now we see some of the results of their kindness (I say “some” because the rest of the story is yet to be told). It is truly amazing to see what God will do when His people do what they should do. It pays off in a big way when you allow God to use you and this is evidence of that.
As a pastor, I could not be more proud of those who are a part of this story. They stepped up to the plate at a crucial time and hit a home run! And to think that it all started with a kind word to a total stranger in the church office and a church full of friendly people who received these two girls with open arms—amazing! Nothing is more thrilling than watching God work in people’s lives.
We can always find 1001 excuses for not doing what we should, but when we face our fears, get self out of the way, and do as God leads, blessings are sure to follow. I’m so thrilled and thankful that God let me witness all this. It was indeed “a special day”—I’m glad I didn’t miss it. Did you? I can’t hardly wait to see what God does next. I bet it will be AWESOME! Think about it.

SAVED AND SURE

July 20, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”–1 John 5:13

Pastor Stephen Davey wrote, Queen Victoria, sovereign of Great Britain from 1837-1901, attended worship in St. Paul’s Cathedral and listened to a sermon that piqued her interest. After the message she asked her chaplain the question, “Can one be absolutely sure in this life of eternal safety?” His answer was, “No, there is no way that anyone can be absolutely sure.”

This incident was published afterward in the Court News and came to the notice of a humble minister named John Townsend. After reading the Queen’s question and the answer given, he prayed for wisdom, and felt compelled to send these words:

“To Her Gracious Majesty, our beloved Queen Victoria, from one of your most humble subjects: With trembling hands, but heart-filled love, and because I know that we can be absolutely sure now for our eternal life in the home that Jesus went to prepare, may I ask Your Most Gracious Majesty to read the following passages of Scripture: John 3:16; Romans 10:9-10. I sign myself, your servant for Jesus’ sake, John Townsend.”

John Townsend took others into his confidence, and they offered up prayer to God on Her Majesty’s behalf. About two weeks later, he received the following letter:

“To John Townsend: I have carefully and prayerfully read the portions of Scripture referred to. I now believe in the finished work of Christ for me, and trust by God’s grace, to meet you one day in that place He has prepared for us in heaven. Victoria Guelph”

The Queen of England bowed her heart and surrendered her life to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords—the One whose majesty extends over all the earth. After she discovered the assurance of salvation through faith in Christ alone, she eventually carried copies of a small booklet to give to her subjects. Safety, Certainty, and Enjoyment contained the plan of salvation and the assurance that one could have in Christ. These were the very things she had discovered upon receiving the Truth.

My friend, don’t be deceived by the wisdom of the present age, which says that truth cannot be known, and that material, scientific evidence must be obtained before anything can be proven. As John writes, the proof is in our hearts, and only those who have tasted the everlasting water which God has so freely offered (John 6) can be assured of its never-ending benefit.

Here are the facts: Jesus was born; He died; He rose again on the third day; He is living in the hearts of all those who trust in Him.

And the Apostle John says . . . of this we can be assured!

GOD GETS THE CREDIT

September 5, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

For the Christian, nothing is so embarrassing as to examine one’s life in the light of first century Christianity. our shortcomings are obvious! Even a casual reading of the book of Acts reveals that things are not the same. Granted, everything shouldn’t be the same–that was a different day. But when it comes to personal devotion, strength of character, compassion for the lost, courage to stand, etc. those early disciples serve as an example for us, and we are way off course!
In that holy record of history we are amazed at what we read. Think about it. That early church was composed of poor, uneducated men who had no unusual talents. They were plain, ordinary, common men, not of the upper crust of society. They had no political clout, rich supporters or financial reserves. Nor were they great orators. Add to that the fact that they lived in a hostile environment and you wonder how they survived, let  alone thrived. Yet, without the aid of TV, radio, printing presses, beautiful buildings, etc. their number grew daily. Thousands were saved and added to the church. Although hated by the majority, that church was the talk of the town.
So why do we struggle so? We’ve got so much more going for us, why do we reach so few? Why are our numbers decreasing rather than increasing? We could make an argument for it being due to a lack of effort, there is some truth to that, but that’s not the main difference. The early church grew because “the Lord added to the church” (Acts 2:47). In other words, it was what God did, not what they did that made the difference. That gets overlooked today.
Modern churches depend too much on what man can do, rather than God. We tend to think that we can be successful if we just do the right things. We suppose a bigger and better staff could get the job done. Or maybe it’s time for a fresh face in the pulpit–a younger preacher that identifies with the younger crowd. Maybe a new program, something with a catchy name will turn things around. Or maybe it’s time to tear the old building down and build something that will attract a lot of attention. The list could go on and on, but none of these things ever get to the heart of the matter. There are churches all across the nation that have all these things and more, and they are still failing to win the lost. The truth of the matter is what Jesus said in John 15:5– ” without me ye can do nothing”.
There’s an old song that puts it all in perspective by saying,”all is vain unless the Spirit”. Exactly! Why can’t we see it? We are like helpless little babes trying to do something that is far beyond our ability. “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it–“(Psalm 127:1). It was “the Lord working with them”(Mark 16:20) that made them successful. He will work with us also, if we meet His conditions. Don’t dare blame God for our failures. Don’t accuse Him of being unable or unwilling. If we would do things His way He would do “great and mighty things” as He promised. All the failures belong to us and all the successes to Him.
If we would repent sincerely, pray earnestly, feed on the Word daily, witness boldly, give generously, forgive freely, surrender fully’ and serve joyfully, there is no telling what great things God would do. We would be amazed. The problem is we don’t and God won’t until we do. Think about it!
