THE SAVIOR’S SUFFERING

May 29, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered.”Hebrews 5:8

We are told that the Captain of our salvation was made perfect through suffering, therefore we who are sinful, and who are far from being perfect, must not wonder if we are called to pass through suffering too. Shall the head be crowned with thorns, and shall the other members of the body be rocked upon the dainty lap of ease? Must Christ pass through seas of his own blood to win the crown, and are we to walk to heaven dryshod in silver slippers? No, our Master’s experience teaches us that suffering is necessary, and the true-born child of God must not, would not, escape it if he might. But there is one very comforting thought in the fact of Christ’s “being made perfect through suffering”—it is, that he can have complete sympathy with us. “He is not an high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” In this sympathy of Christ we find a sustaining power. One of the early martyrs said, “I can bear it all, for Jesus suffered, and he suffers in me now; he sympathizes with me, and this makes me strong.” Believer, lay hold of this thought in all times of agony. Let the thought of Jesus strengthen you as you follow in his steps. Find a sweet support in his sympathy; and remember that, to suffer is an honourable thing—to suffer for Christ is glory. The apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy to do this. Just so far as the Lord shall give us grace to suffer for Christ, to suffer with Christ, just so far does he honour us. The jewels of a Christian are his afflictions. The regalia of the kings whom God hath anointed are their troubles, their sorrows, and their griefs. Let us not, therefore, shun being honoured. Let us not turn aside from being exalted. Griefs exalt us, and troubles lift us up. “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him.” (Morning & Evening)

WHO’S FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

September 28, 2009 By Pastor David Stone

Well over 40 years ago I heard J. Vernon McGee preach on the radio and my first impression was,”Man, this guy must be some country hick!”(of course that describes me also). But as I kept listening I began to realize that he was a great Bible teacher and I made it a habit to listen to him as often as I could. Although Dr. McGee has been dead for many years, you can still hear his radio broardcast today. I thought about all this the other day when I ran across an article by Dr. McGee. It was a blessing to me and its message is greatly needed today. I have posted it here because I’m confident that it will be a blessing:

Who’s Following in Your Footsteps?
by Dr. J. Vernon McGee

Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good. (Ecclesiastes 9:18)

There is a tremendous influence exerted by the life of one individual. And the influence is more potent when it is in the wrong direction. History bears this out. Adam sinned and his sin has affected the entire race of mankind. Achan sinned, and because of him an entire nation went down in defeat. Rehoboam’s sin split the kingdom of Israel. The sin of Ananias and Sapphira brought the first defect into the early church, and from that day on the church has not been as potent as it was in the beginning.

You and I have an influence, either for good or for bad. No matter who you are, you occupy a place of influence. “For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself” (Romans 14:7). My friend, all of us are preachers. You are preaching to those around you by the life that you live. I personally believe that the do-gooder, the man who boasts of his moral life apart from God is the greatest detriment. He actually stands in the way; he blocks the way to God because his message is, “Live like I do. I live without God. I just do good.” There is nothing quite as deadening as that.

You are a preacher, whoever you are. It may be in a very small circle, but you are affecting someone. You are a preacher in your own home. This reminds me of a father who kept a jug of whiskey hidden in the corn crib. It was his habit to go out there every morning and get himself a drink. On a snowy morning he went out to the barn as was his habit, but this time he heard someone behind him. He turned around and found that it was his little son following him, stepping in the footsteps in the snow where his father had walked. The father asked, “What are you doing, son?” The boy answered, “I’m following in your footsteps.” He sent the boy back into the house, and then he went out to the corn crib and smashed that jug of whiskey. He realized that he didn’t want his boy to be following in his footsteps. Someone in your home is following in your footsteps. Where are you leading him?

You may be influencing a wide circle of human society. You may have influence in your neighborhood and in your community. You have influence in your Sunday school. Somebody is looking at you and watching to see whether or not you mean business with God. Does your going to church mean anything more to you than going to a drive-in to pick up a hamburger? Does your life suggest that there is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun? You have influence.

You remember that Peter preached a mighty sermon on the Day of Pentecost. Andrew just sat on the sidelines and could say, “That is my brother. I brought him to Christ.” That was Andrew’s influence. You, today, are pointing men to heaven or to hell. Now, if you want to go to hell, that’s your business, but you have no right to lead a little boy there. You have no right to lead your family and those who surround you there. Even if you want to go, it’s awful to lead others. Influence – “One sinner destroyeth much good.” Think about it.

PLEASURE IN PAIN

May 28, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ sake: for when I am weak, then I am strong.-2 Cor.12:10

Not until we discover God’s plan for our life are we able to make sense of our trials. Perhaps the biggest problem is that we all tend to believe that we deserve better. Something tells us that life is unfair and that we should be exempt from hardships. That would be nice, but it isn’t true.

To get to the truth about ourselves we have to look to God’s Word. We can parade ourselves before the world and win the approval and applause of everyone, and still not measure up to the standard of perfection. Or we could use the power of reason, compare ourselves to others and conclude that we are more deserving, yet not qualify for an exemption status. The cold hard fact is that, based on God’s righteous standard, we all come up short—way short!

Our unworthiness is not only depicted by the manner in which God’s Word describes the sinner, but also by the declaration that salvation comes “by grace”, “not by works”. Were we worthy grace would have nothing to do with it.

Once we get it nailed down in our mind that we are sinful and unworthy we are able to see that we don’t deserve anything and should be thankful for everything. Regardless of what happens to us, regardless of how bad and painful it might be, it is always less that what we actually deserve. That’s why we should be thankful for every blessing and uncomplaining about every burden.

Not until we get to place that can we see ourselves as chief of sinners, the least of all saints and “take wrong” and allow ourselves “to be defrauded” ( 1 Cor. 6:7) can we endure hardships without complaining and enjoy ourselves without ceasing. And that is a major milestone in a person’s life. Do yourself a favor— discover what God says about mankind and accept the truth about yourself. You will never be the same! God’s plan is to make you holy, rather than happy. and hardships are a part of the process. The person who comes to realize this will be able to “count it all joy” when they “fall into divers temptations”(James 1:2), endure any trial, and glorify God in any situation.

I LOVE KENTUCKY

September 24, 2009 By Pastor David Stone

Although I was born and raised in the Ozarks of Missouri and live in the great state of Texas, I love Kentucky! Whether it is “Wildcat” basketball, Golden Pond, fishing on the many lakes and rivers, man I love Kentucky–it is beautiful. But the main thing about my memories of Kentucky has to do with the fact that I have preached all over the western half of the state. That’ why the news headline caught my eye. I was even more interested when I saw the specific location–“Manchester, Ky.” I have preached there on numerous occasions and we even started a church there. Now the story gets sad.

The article told about a US Census worker who was found hanged from a tree near a cementary. The man had the word “fed” scrawled on his chest. He was evidently a victim of anti-government sentiment. In Clay County, Ky. that’s not unusal. It is a tough place to live.

Not long ago I wrote an article called,”Just Waiting for a Spark”, describing the ever mounting tension that is building in our nation. I fear we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. Our leaders are pushing us toward socialism, while totally ignoring the real problems in our country, and bitter resentment is building every day. Our nation is in serious trouble and the greatest threat is from within, not from without.

The solution to our problem, of course, is a spiritual awakening, but we see no signs of that. What we must remember is that revival happens one person at a time. A nation is no better than the people within it. Our best and only hope for turning our nation around is for Christians to get right with God and get busy preaching the gospel and establishing churches. We are not going to solve our problems by finding a political champion to defeat the opposing party. Our problem is of a spiritual nature and only a genuine revival in our churches can bring about the transformation that is needed. And, remember–that happens one person at a time. Has it happened in your life? Think about it!

BEYOND THE BAISICS

May 27, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

There are those who boast that they read the Bible everyday and read through it at least once a year, some for many years, yet they are woefully ignorant of the great doctrines of the Bible. They have no idea what atonement, justification, sanctification, etc. means, and they don’t seem to care if they ever do. That’s sad.

Although they are familiar with the popular stories of the Bible they have no idea as to their spiritual significance. When it comes to shadows and types they are clueless, and not much better when it comes to parables and prophecies. They enjoy the inspirational aspects of the Bible, but have little interest in instructions. To them the Bible is more like a good-luck charm or a rabbit’s foot. They are quick to affirm their belief that it is God’s Word, but their understanding of it is very limited. If you point out something from the Bible that is contrary to what they believe they usually respond with “That’s just your interpretation”.

If you are one of those I’ve just described, I’m not trying to belittle or embarrass you. I’m thrilled that you are reading your Bible everyday, everyone should, but I want you to see that there is so much more to it than that. The doctrines I’ve mentioned are glorious and should be of interest to all, not just pastors and theologians. These are precious truths that pertain to your relationship with God that will bless your heart beyond measure as you grasp more and more of their meaning. They speak of the person and work of Christ, and are never boring.

Try doing a word study sometime and read all the verses related to it. You will be blessed. Study a particular section of the Bible as though you had to teach it next Sunday and you will be amazed by what you will learn and how you will be helped. Do yourself a favor and start some sort of systematic study of God’s Word. It will not only change your life, it will thrill your soul beyond what you ever imagined.

Seeing that the Bible is God’s revelation to man how can we not be interested? Considering that it has transforming power how can we ignore it? Knowing it deals with the most important issues in life and answers the most perplexing questions in the world, how can we not care? Think about it!
