THE ATTRACTION OF JESUS

April 6, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

….. He is altogether lovely…. Song of Solomon 5:16
His love wins us.
His glory charms us.
His beauty attracts us.
His sympathy soothes us.
His gentleness subdues us.
His faithfulness inspires us.

He is the “altogether lovely One!”

Jesus is all that is tender in love.
Jesus is all that is wise in counsel.
Jesus is all that is patient and kind.
Jesus is all that is faithful in friendship.
Jesus is all that is balmy, soothing, and healing.

The heart of Jesus is ever loving towards His children.
The disposition of Jesus is ever kind towards His children.
The nature of Jesus is ever sympathizing towards His children.

Jesus is your Brother, your Friend, your Redeemer.
As your Brother — He knows the need of His brethren in adversity.
As your Friend — He shows Himself friendly.
As your Redeemer — He has redeemed your soul from sin and hell.

There is . . .
not a moment of your time,
nor an event of your life,
nor a circumstance of your daily history,
nor a mental or spiritual emotion of yours —
in which you are not borne upon the love, and
remembered in the ceaseless intercession of Christ.

Yea, He is altogether lovely! This is my Beloved, and this is my Friend!–” Song of Songs 5:16

TIRED OF WAITING

February 28, 2009 By Pastor David Stone

I am impatient by nature. That doesn’t make it right–I’m just stating a fact. I hate long lines, railroad crossings, stop lights, haircuts, etc. Most of you know what I mean–it is a common problem. People just don’t like to wait.

However, there is an area where we have a right to be duly concerned about having to wait. I’m talking about waiting because of procrastination. Why does take so long to get things done? I can understand it if it is a  government project–the word “government” says it all. We expect red tape when we deal with something so inept as the government. But we ought to expect more out of those who labor in the vineyard of the Lord.

Sadly “foot-dragging” is a common problem in church ministry. It seems to take forever to get the simplest things done. And don’t give me that balony about “that’s all you can expect out of volunteers”. That’s no excuse. Those same volunteers have no problem getting to work on time and finishing their secular assignments. They do what they want to do without any delay. It’s the ministry that always gets put on the back-burner. Why should God’s work always be last on the list?

This is one reason why churches limp along at a snail’s pace. People just keep dragging their feet. Simple projects seem to take forever. It can take weeks to change a burned out light bulb! After it is finally noticed someone makes mention of it, but nobody does anything. Next week somebody enquires if there are any bulbs, but nobody takes action. Finally after another week has passed someone decides to take action and the bulb is replaced. By now there is another bulb burned out and the process starts all over again.

The sad fact is that most people are selfish, undisciplined, and unorganized. We simply do not have a sense of urgency when it comes to Christian ministry. We need to correct that. We’ve all heard the saying,”Little things mean a lot”, there is even a song to that effect. Well it is true. If we would start doing the little things that need to be done it would make a big difference in the effectiveness of the church. We should have the attitude that there are no little things when it comes to serving God.

My mother used to say,”If a job is worth doing it is worth doing right.” You’ve probably heard that. Well if we’re going to do it right we need to do it without delay. We need to break the habit of procrastinating. It is like a ball and chain on the church. If there is a job to do don’t put it off. Do it without delay and you will be amazed at how much more is accomplished. Think about it!

YOU CAN’T —- CHRIST CAN

April 6, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“Without Me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5

NEVER forget that in the Lord is our righteousness and strength. We are not sufficient to think rightly of ourselves, but through Him we can do all things. Never attempt anything without looking to Jesus for power. Let a knowledge and constant sense of weakness keep you near to Him; sensibly depending on Him; and ascribing all good unto Him. You cannot, He can. You have destroyed yourself, in Him is your help found. It is only by union to Him, and receiving from Him, that you can glorify God, adorn your profession, enjoy your privileges, and obey the holy precepts of the gospel. Never presume, but come up out of the wilderness leaning on Him, your beloved. Live as one deeply sensible of your dependence upon, and obligation to, the Lord Jesus. He is the strength of the poor, the strength of the needy in his distress, and your strength too. Beloved, Jesus is your life-giving Head, the Fountain from which you are to draw all your supplies, and the Friend to whom you are to carry all your cares. He will work in you to will and to do of His own good pleasure.

Jesus, immutably the same!
Thou true and living vine!
Around Thy all-supporting stem
My feeble arms I twine;
Thou art my strength, my life, my hope,
Nor can I sink with such a prop.  —James Smith

THE VALUE OF VENTING

February 27, 2009 By Pastor David Stone

I recently received an email that said,” Forgive me, I just needed to vent.” That got me thinking—we all need to “vent” at times. Life is tough and our burdens can get hard to bear. It helps when we can talk about it with someone who cares.

After spending five years teaching the book of Psalms, I was amazed at how patient God is with His people. It startled me to learn that God is not offended when we open up and pour our heart out to Him. In case you didn’t know it, some of the writers said some shocking things about their relationship with God. Some even expressed their feeling that God was treating them as an enemy. That study encouraged me by reminding me that God cares about all our troubles. He knows what is in our heart and He encourages us to express it to Him, appropriately of course.

Friends should feel the same way about each other. One of the advantages of having friends is being able to share our mutual woes, as well as our blessings. While we don’t want to get in the habit of constantly bombarding others with our troubles, it is good to have a friend with whom we can share our feelings. Friends like that are of great value.

Some have made the mistake of taking the “tough guy” approach to their problems. The “I can do it without anybody’s help” attitude isn’t very smart. We do need others, and they need us. That’s why we should work at cultivating friendships. Count yourself fortunate if you have a friend to whom you can “vent”. If you don’t, it would be a good idea for you to become that kind of friend to someone. Remember,” A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly-“(Proverbs 18:24). Think about it!

THE SAD AND GLAD NEWS

April 4, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

We often hear people say, “No two people are alike”, and in a sense that is true. But, it also can be said that, by nature all people are alike. We all descended from Adam and have the same sinful nature. Of all men, “there is no difference”(Rom. 3:22), “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). Whether you trace  your ancestry back to faithful Abraham or Nimrod the rebel, there is no difference. We are all sinful and unfit for the kingdom of God. Your family tree might be that of royalty or rogues, you are a rebel against the King of kings until you claim Christ as your Lord. Whether you are a bum or a banker, without Christ you are spiritually bankrupt. Black or white, bond or free, rich or poor, learned or illiterate we’re all in the same boat by nature, and it’s sinking. That’s the bad news!

The good news is that, “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”(John 3:16). It is good news that, “Jesus. . . by the grace of God should taste death for every man”(Heb. 2:9); “. . .”he died for all”. . (2 Cor. 5:15), that we who are unrighteous “might be made the righteousness of God in him.”(2 Cor. 5:21), That is good news indeed— it is glorious! We have hope —but only in Him!

Jesus made salvation available for everyone, so anyone could be saved. Now “. . whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”(Rom. 10:13). God has provided everything everyone needs for anyone to be saved. All we have to do is “believe” to receive. It is easy for us because it was hard for Him. We can be saved because He was sacrificed. He died that we might live.

The sad news is there is none righteous, no not one. The glad news is, there is One righteous, yes just one. He who is righteous died for the unrighteous. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him”(2 Cor. 5:21). “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. . . (Acts17:31)
