SAFE AND SECURE

March 21, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“Then shalt thou walk in thy way of safety, and thy foot shall not stumble”   (Proverbs 3:23). That is to say, if we follow the ways of wisdom and holiness we shall be preserved in them. He who travels by daylight along the highway is under some protection. There is a way for every man, namely, his own proper calling in life, and if we devoutly walk therein in the fear of God He will preserve us from evil. We may not travel luxuriously, but we shall walk safely. We may not be able to run like young men, but we shall be able to walk like good men.

Our greatest danger lies in ourselves: our feeble foot is so sadly apt to stumble. Let us ask for more moral strength that our tendency to slip may be overcome. Some stumble because they do not see the stone in the way: divine grace enables us to perceive sin and so to avoid it. Let us plead this promise and trust in Him who upholds His chosen.

Alas! Our worst peril is our own carelessness, but against this the LORD Jesus has put us on our guard, saying, “Watch and pray.”

Oh, for grace to walk this day without a single stumble! It is not enough that we do not actually fall; our cry should be that we may not make the smallest slip with out feet but may at the last adore Him “who is able to keep us from stumbling.” –Faith’s Checkbook

“OUT-DATED?”

January 19, 2009 By Pastor David Stone

The older I get the more “Out-Dated” I feel. This, however, has nothing to do with age. This feeling comes from being out of sync with others. I’m not talking about the world in general—I haven’t been in sync with the world since I trusted Christ as my Savor. No it isn’t that. I’m talking about the way professing Christians have changed over the last forty years.

You would have to be blind not to see that there has been a drastic shift in the views and actions of professing Christians over this period of time. It’s hard to believe what has happened. Don’t misunderstand me—I’m not one of those who say, “ I’ve never changed any of my beliefs since the day I was saved.” I got some doubts about how much they have been studying God’s Word if they say that. Although I haven’t changed my beliefs in regards to the major doctrines of the Bible, I’ve changed my views in regards to other matters of lesser importance. I believe we ought to change when compelled to do so by the truth. That’s the real issue—what is right and what is wrong? We live in a day when it seems nothing is wrong, except maybe taking a firm stand for the truth. It seems that people today will tolerate anything except those who refuse to tolerate sin. Seems amazing that you can’t convince people that truth never changes.

I don’t mind telling you—I feel out of touch with most folks today. I know what some of you are thinking—“He is old fashioned”, “He isn’t up to date”. ”He is living in the past”, etc. That’s alright. My grief isn’t grounded in what they think about me. I grieve because they have forsaken the truth. That’s what hurts. The fact that they don’t agree with me doesn’t matter. Their being blinded to the truth matters very much. If someone saying, “You are behind the times” means that I have not departed from the truth, then I take that as a compliment.

I’m not the least bit concerned about being in step with the crowd. I’m not trying to win a popularity contest. My only concern is walking in the truth and pleasing Christ. Brag all you want about being the “ coolest dude” in town—it won’t be so funny when you stand before Christ. It’s not a matter of being “up-to-date”, it’s a matter of being right. As believers we ought to value the truth, abide in the truth, proclaim the truth, and “earnestly contend” for the truth. We are never at liberty to ignore it. We shall be judged by it. Think about it!

JUST DO IT

March 20, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it.” – John 2:5

We must obey whether we can understand or not. When Jesus was at the wedding in Cana, the servants had no way of knowing what Jesus was going to do. It might have seemed silly to them to fill pots with water. But Jesus’ mother gave them some very wise advice that we would do well to heed: “Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it.”

It wasn’t a matter of whether they understood it or not, just that He told them to do it. The same Jesus who turned water into wine can transform your home, can transform your life, can transform your family, can transform your future. That same Jesus is still in the miracle working business. His business is the business of transformation.

Someone has well said that nature forms us, sin deforms us, the penitentiary reforms us, education informs us, the world conforms us, but only Jesus transforms us.

A lot of times your mind is going to say, “Well, that’s old fashioned,” or “That doesn’t make sense.” Never come to the Bible that way. Never parade the Bible across the judgment bar of your reason. Whatever He says to you, do it.– Adrian Rogers

TIRED OF BEING USED?

January 16, 2009 By Pastor David Stone

Did you ever feel like you were “just being used”? I’ll bet you have. It happens to everyone. On behalf of all the pastors, let me tell you it is a common problem. Most have felt like they were considered as nothing more than a piece of furniture or church owned equipment—useful only until a new model comes along or until they are out of style. They often feel they are just tolerated until they can no longer meet the expectations of the church. Then it’s off to the dump!

But pastors aren’t the only ones who feel that way. The same thing happens in all walks of life. No need to illustrate—anyone who strives to fulfill their duties know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s an awful feeling and sometimes it is difficult to keep going. Everyone gets tired of people taking advantage of them and feeling unappreciated. So how do you keep going when you feel like throwing in the towel?

Whether we are able to keep going or not is a matter of motive. Why do we do what we do? That’s the key issue. Here’s the answer—“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”(Colossians 3:23). When our main motive is to please God we will endure the slights and injustices of others. It still hurts, unrequited love always does, but we will be empowered to do what we should regardless of how people treat us.

The only way to really please yourself is to please Christ. Knowing  He is pleased with us will keep us going under the most trying circumstances. He turns drudgery into delight. Life is tough for everyone and it is made even tougher by those who just want to use you to get what they want. But we can get the job done by keeping our focus on Christ. So, if you are frustrated because others are unkind, consider your motive. THINK ABOUT IT!

PRECIOUS PROMISES

March 19, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises- – –  2 Peter 1:4
Trouble comes to all without exception, and often without expectation, explanation, or escape. Tragedy strikes, fear follows, heartache comes, tears flow, anger arises, and we find ourselves in a sad situation. We want things to be different, but we can’t change or control what has happened. We grieve and wonder if we can ever laugh again. We search for answers, but find none. We ask God, but He isn’t talking. So we wonder—oh how we wonder- – ” Why?” It is then more than ever that we must cling to the precious promises of God. Writing to his congregation in 1846, James Smith said:

“The promises of Scriptures are the promises of the great God; they are all of free grace; they are confirmed by the blood of Jesus; and are exceeding great and very precious. They are so plain that a child can understand them; and so great that no angel could fulfil them. There is such a variety that they meet every case; and such a fulness that they include every want. They are breasts of consolation for the poor, tried, and distressed believer; and are the strength and support of every child of God. They are our plea at the throne of grace, our confidence in the hour of trail, and our rejoicing in prospect of death. Beloved, God’s promises are to be your daily comfort: it is for you to search them out, store them up, believe them, trust in them, plead them, and be assured of their fulfilment, because “He is faithful who promised.” The promises are more precious than gold or silver; sweeter than honey or the honey-comb; more lasting than the earth; and more stable than the pillars of heaven. Let us think of them, plead them, and expect their fulfilment today; our God is a faithful God, keeping covenant and mercy unto a thousand generations.”

Praise to the goodness of the Lord,
Who rules His people by His word;
And there as strong as His decrees,
He sets His kindest promises.
