ARE YOU LISTENING?

March 11, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

– – – hear ye Him.– Matt.17:5
Strange that we listen to the crude jokes of a stranger, the carnal music of a concert, the lies of a politician, hours of make believe on TV, and yet find no time to hear the Son of God. We would do well to consider what James Smith said to his congregation in 1840:

“Jesus speaks to us in His word; He tells us all His mind; and the Father commands us to hear Him. He speaks to us on a variety of subjects; He instructs, exhorts, warns, directs, and comforts. He always speaks in love. Every word is intended to do us good. Let us then take up His word and say, “I will hear what God the Lord will speak.” How much better this than to listen to Satan, unbelief, carnal reason, or men. Let us believe what He says, for He speaks truth; expect what He promises, for He intends to bestow; practise what He commands, for His ways are peace; and abstain from what He prohibits, for it is sure to be injurious. Hear Him, and plead His word in prayer. Hear Him, and oppose what He says, to fear, Satan, and appearances. Hear Him, and compare all doctrines with His word. Hear Jesus everyday, give Him your attention at least for a few minutes; you can hear nothing better than what He speaks; no one that has a greater claim upon your attention. Hearing Jesus with attention, prayer, and faith, will prevent a great number of real evils.”

Have you heard a word from the Lord today? He is still speaking. Are you listening? Why?

“DEATH BY GIFT CERTIFICATE”

December 12, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

If you think the world hasn’t gone crazy just read this, from Dr. Albert Mohler:

Gift certificates are now a big part of the American economy. Along with electronic gift cards, gift certificates represent a growing segment of the consumer market — and for good reason. Who wouldn’t welcome and appreciate a gift certificate to a favorite store or service provider?

Well, what if the product is abortion? Planned Parenthood of Indiana is now selling gift certificates redeemable “for services or the recipient’s choice of birth control method.” Those “methods” include abortion.

As The Washington Times reports:

“Indiana residents in need of a quick stocking stuffer this holiday season have an unusual option: Planned Parenthood gift certificates.

“The group’s Hoosier State chapter on Wednesday began selling gift certificates redeemable at any of its 35 facilities for any service provided — from basic health screenings to birth control to abortions.”–end of quote.
Since 1973 more than 48 million babies have been murdered in America and if some get their way things will get even worse. So, who is guilty of these terrible crimes? The mothers, the doctors, and the legislators all share part of the guilt—but so do those who empower them to do so. Every person who votes for a leader who supports abortion is just as guilty as the woman who submits to it. Don’t boast about how much you love God when you aid those who murder innocent babies. You are just as guilty as a person who gives someone a “Gift Certificate for Death”. THINK ABOUT IT!
Mohler then concludes with these words:”The gift certificates from Planned Parenthood represent a brazen and ill-disguised effort to package abortion as a gift. When the state’s health commissioner calls these certificates as “really a meaningful gift,” she adds her influence to the effort.

So this Christmas shopping season comes with something new — an offer of death by gift certificate.”

WALK WORTHY

March 10, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“—walk worthy of God.” 1 Thessalonians 2:12
Understanding who we are and what we have in Christ plays a major role in what we do for Christ. And that makes an impact on those with whom we have contact. As Christians we are to walk worthy of God that others might see Christ in us. James Smith wrote:

“GOD hath call us with a holy calling, to enjoy a holy Saviour, believe a holy Gospel, possess a holy nature, and walk in a holy way. All the provisions of free grace, all the promises of infinite love, and all the precepts of reigning holiness, unite to require us to be a holy people unto the Lord our God. We are to imitate the conduct of our God. He feeds His foes, loves His people, and always acts becoming His glorious character. Enemies will lie in wait to deceive you, errors will be broached to mislead you; but beware, least being led away by the error of the wicked, ye fall from your own steadfastness. Consider your character: children of God; your high privileges: united to Jesus, temples of the Holy Ghost, companions of saints and angels the friends of God; your destination: to fill a throne of glory, wear a blood-bought crown, and reflect the praises of Jehovah for ever. Walk worthy of God; suitable to your character, profession and destination. Walk with God; walk as Jesus walked; walk circumspectly; walk in love, walk honestly, as in the day; so will you adorn your profession, and secure to yourself comfort and peace.”

When thus we walk with God and men,
The life and conscience clean,
Our faith assumes a body then,
And may be felt and seen.

Questions From Children

December 12, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

As you know, dealing with questions from children can sometimes be difficult. They aren’t afraid to ask the tough questions–questions that adults won’t ask. Maybe we should listen to them more often.

I received the following e-mail from Bro. Warren Vanhetloo and thought it might be helpful to someone:

A local pastor wrote in our paper about a niece asking him, “Why can’t I see God?”  He talked with her about it briefly, but didn’t try to answer her question.  He knew if he gave the obvious answer, “Because He’s invisible,” her response would be, “Why is He invisible?”  In the article, he never did reveal how he might someday try to answer her.  Would any of our pat answers satisfy her?  How do you find some likeness to use when in all creation there is nothing else “like” God? One of the names God uses concerning Himself might be as good as anything we might come up with.  God has made Himself known as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  The word for spirit is often used of the wind or of a breath.  A child can comprehend that a breath is real although it cannot be seen.  We can blow on something and see the result of the invisible breath at work.  We can hear and feel the wind.  Strong winds can do great damage.  We do not see the wind, though we may spot things the wind is carrying along.  We behold the effects of movement of the wind, but we do not see the wind itself.  That’s the nature of it.  That’s what it is and how it works. When a child gets a little older, comparison to radio and TV waves in the air can help to comprehend that something can be real and not be visible.  We are quite accustomed to tuning a radio or selecting a TV station.  The “tool” for talking with God is prayer.  He tells us that He always hears and that He always wants to help.  We won’t actually see Him work or hear Him when He answers, but we will see the way in which He works.  Then it’s important that we thank Him for hearing us and helping us. Sometimes size impresses children.  God is too big for this universe.  He is everywhere present throughout the universe, including all the stars, and yet His greatest presence is outside this universe, in the place He calls “heaven.”  Angels there can see Him, for they are sinless spirit beings and they can see God truly, for He is Spirit.  God promises us that some day we shall see Him.  If we trust Him to forgive our sins, He will take us to be with Himself through all eternity, and we will then be able to see Him.  Now, sin hinders our spiritual sight.  When we are fully cleansed of all sin, we shall behold Him who is perfect and glorious. One special truth needs to be emphasized for children (and for all of us), that, although God is everywhere and is invisible, He chooses, when we accept Jesus as personal Savior, to dwell within each believer.  That indwelling is realized as He is able to guide our desires, our choices, our actions.  He that is the Light of the world makes each one of us tiny shining candles to benefit others we live with and meet throughout life.

TROUBLE IS NEAR, BUT HELP IS HERE

March 9, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

– – – trouble is near- – -Psalm 22:11
An old song says, “Troublesome times are here, filling men’s hearts with fear”, but that could have been written in any generation and still be true. Adam pulled a curse down upon out heads and as a result, “Man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble”(Job 14:1). What we need to remember is that although trouble is near, help is here! One pastor of long ago put it like this:

“Trouble and the Christian are seldom far apart, or long apart; this may sound discouraging; but Jesus and the Christian are never apart. He will never leave us, and trouble is intended to prevent our leaving Him, or to bring us back if we have already wandered. His loving heart guides the hand which smites; and nothing is done by Him, or permitted, but that it may be over-ruled for our good. Trouble may be near, but the throne of grace also is near; His word of promise is near; and He is near who justifieth us. In trouble God can glorify His grace, deepen His work in your heart, brighten your evidences, and fill you with joy and peace in believing; plead with Him to do so, let not trouble fill you with confusion, weaken your faith, or drive you from Him; but listen to, and act upon His word. He says, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble, I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me.” “I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him.” “Hath He said, and shall He not do it? Hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?” Every trouble is intended to endear Jesus to your heart.” (James Smith)
