REVIVAL RESULTS

November 22, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

We just finished a “Revival Meeting” and now comes the test. As we listened to the Word of God, hearts were stirred, sins were confessed, and vows were made. Many resolved to start obeying God and now we wait to see what happens next. I’m optimistic! I really believe that lives have been changed and that we will see fruit as a result.

One of the encouraging things about this meeting was the obvious interest of some of our young people. They not only attended the services, they wanted more. They wanted to learn how to study the bible for themselves and a special class was made available for them. That’s encouraging! When a person gets serious about Bible study it will affect the way they live. I’m looking forward to seeing the difference it makes.

During this meeting we were reminded of our duties as disciples and that God has a work for each of us to do. Every member of the church is important, because each one has a special function to fulfill. You have a wonderful opportuniy to serve God and to make a difference in the world. It’s my prayer that each person who attended will accept the challenge. Discover what God wants you to do and do it. That’s what revival is all about.

THE EXCEPTION

March 3, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him. –Deut. 8:6

Believers once knew what it meant to fear God. Men like John Huss and John Wycliffe willingly faced death for refusing to denounce their faith, knowing that God had warned, “If you deny me before men, I will deny you before my Father.”

Men like Jim Elliot and Nate Saint refused to use their guns against the attacking natives, believing that dying for Christ was far more important than killing unbelievers who would never have another chance at salvation. But this kind of reverence for God and His gospel is rare today.

Today, the church is not only losing its  testimony—it is no longer living up to it. Warren Wiersbe writes in his book, The  Integrity Crisis, these sharp and painful words:

For nineteen centuries the church has been telling the world to admit and confess its sins. Today, in the twilight of the twentieth century, the world is  telling the church  to face up to its sins and to begin living what it preaches.

I might add that is true for us in the twenty-first century!  For hundreds of years, men have stood firm in the gospel despite being persecuted, laughed at, and at times, slaughtered. But a shift has taken place. Now, not only do Christians shy away from persecution and hardship, questioning God in the midst of it, but their lives are full of sin, hiding under the cloak of religion rather than living up to their testimony.

Part of the problem is rooted in our shamefully low viewpoint of God. When we hear truth from God’s Word, we are convicted but not changed; we are challenged but not converted.

It naturally follows that an inferior view of God will birth a shallow view of His Word.

Today, the Bible is not only being questioned and debated, but it is being disobeyed. Why? The fear of the Lord is no longer before our eyes. Christ has become an after-thought, rather than an all-consuming thought.

Reverence for the things of God takes a back seat today in the public arena.  The crowd who claim the name of Christ but float downstream in the current of popular culture find their lives swirling in the eddy of religious pluralism, inclusivism, and universalism— spiraling rapidly downward—moving farther and farther away from distinctiveness and purity.

This crowd becomes the rule. You must choose to be . . . the exception.

Pray for the kind of faith in God  that Abraham had, the kind of purity that Joseph had, and the kind of heart that David had. Pray that God will teach you to fear and love Him, and ask for strength to live an extraordinary life for Him.– Stephen Davey

HEROES

November 21, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

I just noticed a news headline that said, “Monday Night Football tops TV cable ratings.” That’s not at all unusual. People love sports. Entire TV networks wre dedicated to sports of all sorts. You can watch sports 24-7. It’s unbelievable!

Now I’m not against sports. I have my favorite teams just like most people. But it is dangerous to be obsessed with any sport. Far too many people have the wrong heroes. “Superstars” are idolized by many, especially by young people. Instead of admiring people because of their character or their contribution to society, they admire and heap honor on people because of their physical abilities. That’s ridiculous!

I just read about a certain quaterback who plans “to play with (a) broken finger.” What’s the big deal about that? Considering that he is being paid millions every year to “play” a game, he should be willing to play with a broken arm and leg. That’s no hero.

If you want to find a real hero, go to the Walter Reed Army Hospital and visit those who were injured while serving their country; go to the home of a single mother who is trying to raise her children alone; go to a missionary who left fortune, family, and friends to minister to people who hate his guts and threaten to kill him. Those are some of the real heroes!

It’s silly to get all bent-out-of-shape because your favorite team loses a game–it’s just a “game”. Just about everything is more important than that. If you’re going to be troubled about something—concern yourself with the soldier who lost a leg, or the wife who lost her husband, or the missionary who left the comforts of America to live in a third world country. These are the people who deserve to be honored. Think about it!

A REASON FOR HOPE

March 2, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world– Acts 15:18

Perhaps you have known, even recently, the unsettling and sorrowful experience of receiving a phone call, or a doctor’s report, or an employer’s notice that delivered unexpected and tragic news — “You have cancer.” “We’re letting you go.” “Your loved one has been in an accident.” No matter what form these moments take in our particular situation, they always remind us of our personal frailty and inability to control the details of our lives.

The great consolation from God’s Word, however, is that God never has such moments. He is never surprised by calamity that befalls us, He is never taken back by sudden tragedy, His plans are never disrupted by the unexpected. In short, He is never at a loss for a solution to any problem…or for the power to implement it… or for the wisdom to make sure it is the right solution.

God knows all His works (and subsequently, obviously, the events those works will be connected with) from the beginning of the world. It is for this reason that God can, and does, give us such rock-solid assurances in the midst of earth-shattering catastrophes. “I will never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5); “my grace is sufficient for thee” (2 Corinthians 12:9); “all things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28); “trying of your faith worketh patience” (James 1:3).

Beloved, in your moments of overwhelming pain, or grief, or disappointment, flee to the God Who is never disappointed or surprised, but is touched by the feelings of your infirmities. Rush to Him, rest in Him, believe on Him.–Baptist Bible Hour

Content In The City

November 13, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

I’m a country boy at heart. I’ve never really liked cities. As a boy I envisioned the perfect life as living in a little cabin, way back in the woods, with a sparkling stream (loaded with fish) nearby. I thought a few hound dogs was all I needed. But my perspective changed somewhat when I started dating the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I quickly decided that I didn’t really want to spend all my time alone. My views began to change, but I never truly fell in love with the idea of living in the city. Give me a little town (Norman Rockwell type) with quick access to the wooded hills.
Lately, however, I’ve had an attitude adjustment regarding cities. I started noticing that the Bible has a lot to say about cities. I was reminded of this again the other day while reading an article written by the late Ray Stedman. He said, ” Those of us who live in a city and are choked with fumes; crowded on the freeways; and exhausted with fighting taxes, crime, and crabgrass wonder why anyone would want to live a city; it is the country that is attractive to us. But the Bible indicates that God has designed that humans should ultimately live in cities.—Why? A city is always characterized by two qualities: excitment and security. Excitement is created whenever people gather together. There things are happening; that’s where the action is. Cities are also a place of security. If you are going to experience trouble, it is better to have others around. Defense is more easily possible in a city if an attack comes.”
Think about it folks. Abraham “looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God”(Heb. 11:10). Our heavenly home will be a city (Rev.21:2), not a cabin in the corner of gloryland. So let’s not complain because we are forced to live in a big city with all its attendant problems. We are here for a reason. In His providence God has put us here that we might carry out the great commission. Sure we have problems. No it’s not always easy, but it’s necessary and we need to remember that. Being where God wants us to be is all that really matters. Living in a city puts us in contact with numerous people and gives us a chance to tell them about Christ. We need to think of it as an opportunity, rather than an obstacle. As Christians we have no right to seclude ourselves for the sake of seeking personal gratification. We have a work to do. Remember, Calvary wasn’t easy, but it was essential. Jesus didn’t complain about the agony of the cross and we shouldn’t complain about the discomforts of the city. We are here on a mission that is much more important than our personal comfort. Our lives all much easier than that of Paul, yet he said “I have learned , in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”(Phil.4:11).We should do the same. Remember–we’re not home yet!
