THINK ABOUT IT         6-6-24

June 6, 2024 By Michael Wassell

THINK ABOUT IT         6- 6-24
THINK
Several years ago I decided to start a “Blog” to maintain contact with our church members and to share information. I chose to call it “THINK ABOUT IT”. I did so for what I believe is a good reason. Since our thoughts affect our attitude and actions it’s crucial that we think right. That’s not as easy as it sounds. Due to modern day technology, the liberal media, corrupt government, progressive universities, etc there is a lot of confusion. We are bombarded with lies and it is crucial that we focus on the facts.

The world is in a mess because the majority refuse to think intelligently. Some won’t quit talking long enough to simply think. Others are so preoccupied with entertainment, recreation, etc, that they don’t take time to just sit and think. In their mind that would be boring or a waste of time.

I’ve often said, the most important piece of furniture might be a rocking chair or porch swing. You almost never see folks just sitting on their porch anymore. Seems that everyone is either on their phone or computer, or glued to the TV, or attending some form of entertainment. Thinking is a lost art today. If you are cutting timber with an axe it is not a waste of time to stop and sharpen the axe. Nor are you wasting time when you set aside time to read God’s Word and meditate on it.

The best kind of thinking is meditation in God’s Word, but that’s rare today. In this fast pace rat race most church members fail to soak their soul in the great truths of God’s word. They are too busy for the Bible. So they starve themselves spiritually- evidently unaware of the costly consequences. There is no Christian on earth who can neglect God’s Word and not be the worse for it.

Let me make a suggestion. Everyday, set aside some time to sit in a comfortable place with your Bible, notepad, and pen. Pray and read God’s word slowly, weighing every word and phrase, and jotting down your thoughts for future reference. Without that discipline in your life your spiritual growth will be stuck on stunted. And that will rob you of the ability to resist temptation, endure trials, discern the truth, and avoid troubles. So , again I want to encourage you to Think About It! – HDS

THINK ABOUT IT           6-3-24

AN UNEXPECTED BLESSING

I recently had a thrilling experience. I happened to notice a post on Facebook that mentioned a church in Kentucky that I helped establish years ago ( April 4, 1986), so I contacted the new pastor and was greatly blessed.

After moving to Texas 37 years ago I often wondered how that church was doing or if it still existed. It was a blessing to connect with the pastor and learn that they are doing great, supporting 18 missionaries, and planning to build a new building. I listened to one of the pastor’s messages and I’m convinced that the church is in good hands.

This experience reminded me that our labor in the Lord is not in vain. We know we will be rewarded for our service when we get to heaven, but some great blessings come while we are on earth. Knowing our labor is not in vain is a great encouragement.

Regardless of the nature of your service to God you can rest assured that He will bless your effort in some way. That being the case let us do the best we can, as long as we can, while we can. As Paul said in 1 Cor.15:58 “ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”- Think about it! – HDS

PRAYER WARRIORS

I’ve noticed after nearly 58 years in the ministry that certain words and phrases fade away. One example of this is the phrase “Prayer Warriors “. I remember when it was a common phrase, but we seldom hear it today. Many have lost sight of the fact that we are engaged in a spiritual warfare and we can’t win without prayer.

I am so very thankful for the men and women who make up our prayer ministry. Rather than being in the limelight getting attention they work behind the scenes getting little or no attention. As your pastor I want to say,”I am proud of you!”. Nobody is doing anything more important than what you are doing. Pray makes a difference, so don’t get discouraged. Never give up!

I also want to encourage everyone to pray regularly and earnestly for our church and all concerns. You can’t do anything better. Richard Foster wrote: “ “People desperately need the ministry of prayer. Marriages are being shattered. Children are being destroyed. People are living in dark depression and misery. And we can make a difference if we will learn to pray. If we genuinely love people, we will desire for them far more than is within our power to give them, and that will lead us to prayer.”

My prayer for each of you is as Paul said in Col.1:10 “ That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;” And that can’t happen without prayer. “ Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”(Jam.5:16). THINK ABOUT IT! – HDS

Prayer is not a last extremity—it’s a first necessity.

WHAT HEAVEN MEANS TO ME
After reading an article called “Real Estate in Heaven”, by Charles Spurgeon, my heart was stirred. My first thought was, “Now that’s prime property!”, or to put it in hillbilly slang, which I’m prone to do, “There ain’t nuttin like it!” The fact is, the glory that awaits God’s children is indescribable. There is nothing that compares to it.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better way to start the day than that. It was just what I needed, and I doubt that I’m alone. The prospect of heaven affects our outlook concerning our present problems. The older I get and the more I think about heaven the less excited I become concerning the things of this world. I can remember a time when it really mattered to me who won the World Series, etc., etc., but now it makes no difference at all. In fact it sickens me to think about all the money and attention athletes and entertainers get. Our soldiers get their guts blown out on a foreign battlefield for the sake of freedom and get no respect, while some immoral athlete or entertainer is worshiped by his or her fans. Even professing Christians are more enthused about the things of this world than they are about eternal matters. What a shame! O how foolish!

The truth is, when we are truly concerned about heaven and eternity it will show itself in the way we conduct ourselves every day and every way. Instead of getting all excited about the ways of the world, we need to think more about the next. Unless it is of eternal value it is of no earthly good. Such things are not only of no eternal value they are actually harmful in that they distract us from the things that are truly important. Let us live each day in the sunshine of God’s promises concerning the glory to come. Believe me–it will make a difference in what you do. Well, enough said—I can almost hear someone singing, “This is just what heaven means to me”! Think about it! – HDS

PRAYER

By R.G. Lee

After meeting R.G. Lee and hearing him preach, when I think about prayer I think about this message. He said:

Our world is a sick world–disillusioned, war-scarred, head-dizzy, body-weary, sin-smitten–a world in despair. Human philosophy is bankrupt. Nations, weary and wicked, walk on the edges of abysses. Men and women everywhere are bewildered and distracted by the problems and difficulties of life. Some leaders “loose wild tongues that hold not God in awe.”

When God’s People Pray

There are so many problems that cannot be solved, so many dangers that cannot be averted, so many burdens that cannot be borne by human strength and wisdom, ingenuity and genius. What we need is what God can do. What God can do will be done for us when God’s people pray. There is nothing so necessary in the lives of churches and individuals today as earnest, continued, importunate prayer.

It is the conviction of all who have proved the faithfulness of God that nothing lies beyond the reach of prayer except that which lies outside the will of God. There is no such thing as unanswered prayer when the basis of our beseeching is found within that sovereign will.

The needs of the world are so many and varied and complex. The evils that threaten to lead our greatest graces to the grave and leave the world no copy are so strong, defiant and daring. Apart from the right kind of prayer, there is little hope for us to achieve what God wants us to achieve.

 Power Is Unleashed Through Prayer

Jesus said, “Men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” Andrew Murray said, “In relation to His people, God works only in answer to their prayer.” Jowett said, “I’d rather teach one man to pray than ten men to preach.” Spurgeon said, “Cares are manifold; therefore let your prayers be manifold, for prayer is the sword that will cut the Gordian knot if it cannot be untied.”

By these words we learn that great is the law of intercession. Abraham interceded for wicked Sodom, Moses for wayward and complaining Israel, Samuel for the nation changing its form of government, Elijah for an apostate nation in disaster and for the Zarephath widow in poverty and sorrow, Paul for the church he founded, Jesus for the disciples He called.

Knowing that intercessory prayer is our mightiest weapon and the supreme call for all Christians today, I pleadingly urge our people everywhere to pray. Believing that prayer is the greatest contribution that our people can make in this critical hour, I humbly urge that we take time to pray–and when we take time, really pray.

Let us remember that Goodell said, “He who prays most, helps most”; that Pierson said, “Every step in the progress of missions is directly traceable to prayer”; that Eugene Stock said, “He who faithfully prays at home does as much for foreign missions as the man on the field”; that the poet said, “The place where we can reach the store of hoarded gold and free it for our Lord, the place where God Himself descends and fights for us, is the place of prayer.”

It Is Your Personal Privilege to Pray

You CAN pray. You may muzzle a man so that he cannot articulate a syllable, but you have not made it impossible for him to pray. You may cast a man into a dungeon and load his limbs with chains, keeping him from all manner of communication with his fellowmen, but you cannot keep him from having a conversation with God.

And what is more, and better still, you cannot keep God from coming to the help of His people–to the help of His people against their foes–for God has promised to be, in our behalf, an enemy to our enemies. The door has never yet been forged, the dungeon never yet constructed, the adversary never yet so mighty that can exclude God from His people.

Prayer is the highest of all our privileges as followers of Jesus. Of that privilege, no human power can deprive us. Let us prize it highly and prove it thoroughly in these serious days through which we are passing.

An Appeal for All of Us to Pray

Let there be prayer at sunup, at noonday, at sundown, at midnight–all through the day. Let us all pray for our children, our youth, our aged, our pastors, our homes. Let us pray for our churches, that they may fill their God-appointed missions. Let us pray for our missionaries at home and in foreign lands. Let us pray for ourselves, that we may not lose the word concern out of our Christian vocabulary.

Let us pray for nations in distress, for our own nation, for those who have never known Jesus Christ and redeeming love, for moral forces everywhere, for our national leaders, for all hearts that they may hold no malice, for our tongues and pens, that we be not hurtfully critical.

Let prayer be our portion. Let prayer be our pastime. Let prayer be our passion. Let prayer be our practice. Let us be found at the throne of grace, not only with holy boldness but with serene confidence–knowing that God is faithful to perform that which He has promised and that God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that in us worketh.- By R.G. Lee
