FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS

November 18, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS
“—who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”( Esther 4:14)
Have you ever wished that you had been born at a different time in history? Have you ever thought–I wish I had lived back in the good old days? Well, the truth is that  “the good old days” were not always so good! Every generation has had its problems to deal with. We see an example of this in our text.
These words were spoken by Mordecai as he sought the assistance of Esther. But his challege to the queen also gives us something to think about. We live in tough times, but these are the only times we have. Like the old saying–we have to play the cards we’ve been dealt. We cannot choose the times in which we live, but we can choose how we will live. Some have looked at the situation and have given up in despair. That should never be an option for a Christian. As the children of God we have reason to hope.
Although our heart breaks because of the wretched condition of our country we should not give up. As Christians we have a work to do–regardless of the situation. God has placed us exactly where we are at this point in history and we are here for a reason. Knowing God is in control gives us reason to hope. As Daniel said, “the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will”( Dan. 4:25). Since that is true, our only concern should be to be found faithful in the work God has given us to do. Leave the outcome to Him.
Instead of cursing the night we should be a light. We need action, not complaints. We need to focus on our God-given assignment, believing that if we do what we should it will result in the best possible outcome. David left us an example. Acts 13:36 says,” he had served his own generation by the will of God.” What more could you ask of a man? We should do the same. Let us serve our generation while we can.
Proverbs 21:1 says, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” If we truly believe that it should color our thoughts about everything. That’s not to say that times won’t be tough—-sometimes that is exactly what is needed. God’s plan is much bigger than our personal comfort. And His will is more important than ours. We need to do the best we can and then be patient as God works all things according to the counsel of His own will.

QUIET TIME WITH GOD

November 17, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

“And Isaac went out to meditate in the fields at eventide” (Gen. 24:63).

We should be better Christians if we were more alone; we should do more if we attempted less, and spent more time in retirement, and quiet waiting upon God. The world is too much with us; we are afflicted with the idea that we are doing nothing unless we are fussily running to and fro; we do not believe in “the calm retreat, the silent shade.” As a people, we are of a very practical turn of mind; “we believe,” as someone has said, “in having all our irons in the fire, and consider the time not spent between the anvil and the fire as lost, or much the same as lost.” Yet no time is more profitably spent than that which is set apart for quiet musing, for talking with God, for looking up to Heaven. We cannot have too many of these open spaces in life, hours in which the soul is left accessible to any sweet thought or influence it may please God to send.

“Reverie (day dreaming),” it has been said, “is the Sunday of the mind.” Let us often in these days give our mind a “Sunday,” in which it will do no manner of work but simply lie still, and look upward, and spread itself out before the Lord like Gideon’s fleece, to be soaked and moistened with the dews of Heaven. Let there be intervals when we shall do nothing, think nothing, plan nothing, but just lay ourselves on the green lap of nature and “rest awhile.”

Time so spent is not lost time. The fisherman cannot be said to be losing time when he is mending his nets, nor the mower when he takes a few minutes to sharpen his scythe at the top of the ridge. City men cannot do better than follow the example of Isaac, and, as often as they can, get away from the fret and fever of life into fields. Wearied with the heat and din, the noise and bustle, communion with nature is very grateful; it will have a calming, healing influence. A walk through the fields, a saunter by the seashore or across the daisy-sprinkled meadows, will purge your life from sordidness, and make the heart beat with new joy and hope.   —Mrs. Charles Cowman

GROW IN GRACE

November 17, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever.” (2 Peter 3:18)
Growth is an evidence of life. We see it in plants, animals, and people. Even so, as believers we are to grow spiritually. Since none of us have attained complete Christlikeness there is always room for growth and we should be doing those things that promote it.
We often talk about backslidders and we usually do so with some particular sin in mind. But my favorite definition of a backslidder is this—someone who has ceased to grow in grace, and in the knowledge of Christ. Regardless of how long you’ve been saved, or how much you know, or how much you do or give, there is always room for growth. None of us should be at a standstill. This desire for growth is evidenced again and again in Paul’s desire for himself and for others. Should we not have the same hunger for it also?
If they would be honest, many would have to admitt that their spiritual life plateaued several years ago. After receiving Christ there was a spurt of growth, but then they levelled off. They still attend church and do other things associated with Christianity, but they are not growing. If that describes you—admit it and take the necessary steps to change it. Growth not only makes us more useful, it enables us to overcome sin and to enjoy the fulness of God’s blessings.

A DESERT PLACE

November 15, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

“Into a desert place apart” (Matt. 14:13).

“There is no music in a rest, but there is the making of music in it.” In our whole life-melody the music is broken off here and there by “rests,” and we foolishly think we have come to the end of the tune. God sends a time of forced leisure, sickness, disappointed plans, frustrated efforts, and makes a sudden pause in the choral hymn of our lives; and we lament that our voices must be silent, and our part missing in the music which ever goes up to the ear of the Creator. How does the musician read the “rest”? See him beat the time with unvarying count, and catch up the next note true and steady, as if no breaking place had come between.

Not without design does God write the music of our lives. Be it ours to learn the tune, and not be dismayed at the “rests.” They are not to be slurred over, not to be omitted, not to destroy the melody, not to change the keynote. If we look up, God Himself will beat the time for us. With the eye on Him, we shall strike the next note full and clear. If we sadly say to ourselves, “There is no music in a ‘rest,'” let us not forget “there is the making of music in it.” The making of music is often a slow and painful process in this life. How patiently God works to teach us! How long He waits for us to learn the lesson! –Ruskin

NOT FORSAKEN

November 15, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

” Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”( 2 Cor. 4:9)
Doubts and fears often leave us confused. That’s when we need to turn to God’s Word for reassurance. We must be guided by the facts, rather than our feelings. There are times when we might lose our sense of God’s love, but we can never lose the reality of it. We have blessed assurance that nothing “shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”(Rom.8:39). That glorious fact should cheer up the most troubled heart.
When we find ourself in the furance of affliction we must remember that God’s design is only to remove the dross, making us pure. His great love does not allow Him to do anything that is unjust or harmful to His children. God is never guilty of child abuse or neglect! Although we might forsake Him, He never forsakes us.That gives us hope in the most trying times of life. When we are cast down, and the enemy has his foot on our neck–ready to strike the fatal blow, we can rest assured that the love and power of God will protect us. He will take the worst thing that can happen to us and use it “for good“(Romans 8:28), if we but trust Him.
