MORNING MANNA              2/5/20

February 5, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” – John 15:5

Having repented and received Christ as our Lord and Savior we are saved–but we are not yet sinless! That day will come because we are “in Christ”, but not until we are “with Christ”. Until then, as greatly as we desire to be like Christ, perfection eludes us. We all fail more than we should. Although we are new creatures in Christ we are far from like Him. We fail many times and in many ways, and there is always a reason.

Sometimes it is because we lag behind the Lord. At other times we impatiently run ahead of Him. And sometimes we actually turn away from the Lord. But in all cases, as different as the details might be, we get away from Him, and that is the cause of our failure–something we need to avoid at all cost. This is cause for serious thought.

Accepting Christ is the only way to salvation (John 14:6) and abiding in Christ is the only way to success (John 15:4-7). He who is our only hope of heaven is also our Helper until we get there, and help is something we all need–all the time. We are so very weak that without Him we can do nothing. That fact ought to humble us. In and of ourselves we have nothing of which to boast. The only good in any person is Christ. And for that we ought to be eternally thankful.

Let us then love Him with all our heart, serve Him with all our strength, glorify Him in all that we do, give to Him all our devotion, trust Him for all our needs, and find our pleasure in pleasing Him. Do these things and you will not fail. In the doing of these things we will be able to keep going and growing regardless of the circumstances. HDS (revised from 8/1/15)

MORNING MANNA         2/4/20

February 4, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” – Eph. 5:16

What do you think of when you think of something sacred? Perhaps you think about the Holy Bible, or the Lord’s Day, or worship, or Christian Hymns. But have you ever thought of time as something sacred? Or to put it another way, the sacredness of opportunity? That’s exactly what Paul is speaking about in our text. He is telling us to buy up opportunity.

Time marches on, or as the old proverb says, “time waits for no man”. That’s true. I never expected to live as long as I have, but by the grace of God here we are, all in different stages of life, in the year of 2020. And none of us have any idea how much time we have left. Every day is a precious gift from God and we ought to use it wisely. There are two Greek words translated “time”. One has the idea of hour upon hour and day after day – the duration of time. The other, which is used in this verse, has to do with a definite portion of time – a time when something should happen, “the time” as we might say. It’s the same word that that is translated “opportunity” in Gal.6:10 “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” The idea is that we should make use of every opportunity.

We make a serious mistake when we treat our opportunities with disrespect. Those moments are sacred and should be treated as such. They are divinely ordained appointments for which we are responsible. Don’t misunderstand – that doesn’t mean that we are to be working every moment. There is a time to labor and a time to rest and both are important – both are sacred in the sense that God expects both from us. As we go through life God sets before us opportunities to work, to worship, and to witness, let us walk wisely by doing what God decreed. – HDS

MORNING MANNA         2/2/20

February 2, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.” – Psa. 107:29

I love the song “Til the Storm Passes By”. It reminds us that one day all our trials shall come to an end. But, here on earth we go from one storm to another. Thankfully we have help here and hope for the future. Our blessed hope is the coming of Christ who takes us to a place “where the storms never darken the skies”. Regardless of what they are going through now those who have trusted Christ are assured that joy comes in the morning. All the storm clouds will vanish and the Son shall shine! Until then we wait with patience, knowing that He that shall come will come, just like He said ( Heb. 10:37 ). It’s that blessed assurance that keeps us from getting weary and worried while we wait.

As long as we are on earth we will have troubles, but the same One who assures us of joy in the morning gives us strength for the day and songs in the night. Joy not only comes in the morning, it also comes in our mourning as He gives us grace for our grief. In these dark days and tough times when we are tossed about on the sea of life we are blessed by the grace of God that sustains us. We can endure because we are enabled by the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. Our difficulties give us no reason to despair, for God is greater!

The only thing troublesome to God is people who resist and reject Him – limiting what He wants to do for them. God can easily calm the storms and control nature, but man is different. It’s not that God can’t do anything related to man, but He chooses not to, which enables man to choose. God could change your height, color of your eyes, or anything else, but He doesn’t remove your will. God doesn’t force Himself on us. When it comes to the matter of securing God’s help we must trust and obey Him. Some folks want God’s help in getting what they want, but they have no concern about what God wants. That a sure fire way to not get what you need. But a child of God in the will of God will never lack what the grace of God can provide. – HDS

MORNING MANNA        2/1/20

February 1, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

Nothing ever written or said by man is more important than this one thing—“ye must be born again“–John 3:7. The fact that these words were spoken by Jesus Christ tells us this is important, true, and deserving of our attention. When He speaks we ought to listen. We should listen not only because of the speaker, but also because of the subject.

The Lord was speaking about a spiritual birth–what every man needs most. By nature we are spiritually dead—separated from God, condemned and without hope. The new birth reconciles us to God and we receive eternal life. It makes the difference between heaven and hell, so it makes no sense that we refuse  to listen. It is essential that we understand exactly what the new birth is.

Jesus clearly taught that the new birth is a work of God, not an accomplishment of man. It is the impartation of spiritual life by the power of the Holy Spirit to all who receive Christ as their Lord and Savior. Those who receive Him are accepted by God because their sins are forgiven on His behalf . When He died on the cross He paid our sin debt. He was raised from the dead for our justification. By His grace, salvation is offered as a gift to all who are willing to trust Him. You can do that! All it takes is simple child-like faith to receive the greatest gift possible. We aren’t saved because we give up certain sins, do good deeds, or contribute to worthy causes. It is a gift, not a wage or reward. Although secured at great cost to God it cost you nothing.

As a gift salvation is received, not earned. We are saved by grace not goodness, mercy not merit, atonement not attainment, believing not behaving. Adding to the wonder of this is the fact that God is willing to save “whosoever“– anyone and everyone who truly believes. Regardless of who you are or what you’ve done, you can be forgiven, cleansed, accepted by God, delivered from wrath, and adopted into God’s family. In Christ, God has provided exactly what you need and everything you need. And for you it is all free—paid for by the precious blood of Jesus! Seeing that God cannot lie, why would you reject such an offer?

Salvation is by far the greatest gift a person can ever receive, the most delightful discovery they ever make, the most important thing in life, the most exciting experience you can have, the most valuable thing you can possess, the surest thing on earth, the greatest miracle ever. How can you expect a person who has received such a wonderful gift to remain silent about it? The fact that they desire to tell you how much God cares is an evidence that they care about you. This could be the greatest day of your life if you are willing to trust God to do as He promised. If you are confused please contact a Christian. They would be delighted to help. – HDS (Revised from 5/13/15)

MORNING MANNA         1/31/20

January 31, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.–Acts 1:8

Many years ago I met the famous Russian evangelist Hyman Appleman, a converted Jew, who preached revivals across America and around the world. I was thrilled that I had the opportunity to speak with him, but the greatest blessing was hearing him preach. As a young preacher I was deeply impressed by the way God used him. The other day I happened to run across a sermon he preached in 1941. Here is an excerpt of the sermon where he speaks of how the Holy Spirit empowers God’s servants to do His service:

“His power is beyond human computation and measure. His wisdom is limitless. He is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent. He can take, He has taken the weakest vessel, the humblest tool, the poorest instrument, and wrought wonders with them. It was He who endowed Moses, enrolled Joshua, enabled Samuel, ennobled David, enlightened Isaiah, emancipated Daniel, encouraged Paul and Silas—. He is our Comforter also, ready to transform our lives into channels of blessings, making us mighty unto the pulling down of the strong holds of sin, unto the advancing and the upbuilding of the kingdom, unto the winning of multitudes of precious souls. Without Him we are helpless. With Him the gates of hell cannot prevail against us. He is the key to success, the secret of victory, the door to the impossible. The Holy Spirit is our ally.”

Dear friend if we would keep these glorious truths in mind we would be a lot less prone to get discouraged in the face of difficulty. With the Holy Spirit as our Helper all things are possible giving us good reason to be encouraged. HDS
