PATIENCE AND HOPE

April 19, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

We glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience, and experience, hope – Romans 5:3-4

When we are suffering physically or passing through a time of great trial, it doesn’t seem possible that any good could ever come out of it. Yet Paul says we glory in tribulations; and the reason we do is that, though at the time we cannot see it, something good is going to come out of the trial. The suffering itself is not good but the patience, the experience, the hope that spring from it is very good.

When we face trials that are outside of our control, we are made to learn the lesson of patience. Whether we want to or not, we have to wait. We don’t get what we want immediately. But so often, when the trial is finally lifted, we are able to see how God has used even this difficulty to shape our lives, and the lives of others perhaps, in ways that we could never have imagined. Thus, trials give us experience of God’s wisdom and faithfulness.

In the time of suffering we come to place great value on the promises of God. We may know the promises by memory, but they are never so full of meaning as when we claim them in our darkest hours and deepest struggles. The patience and experience we have gained from past deliverances gives us hope to trust in the Lord and in His promises.

Good has come from our trials because we now have a greater sense our weakness and God’s strength. We have been drawn to a closer walk with Him, and His promises are not just words but a reality in our life. So with Paul we “glory in tribulations.”  (From “A Good Thing”)

FEEL THE PAIN

April 18, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

You may be going through an awful lot right now. Maybe your company is shedding jobs and salaries, trying to keep from going under. Maybe one of the jobs– was yours.

Maybe your marriage is really tanking at the moment. You can’t say you haven’t contributed to the problems, but you’re trying as hard as you can now to make this work, to make this right. Still, you’re not sure where things are headed.

Work. Family. Health. Finances. Between these major categories, life can get very complicated, both from things you’ve done as well as things that just happened. And if God feels very far away today, unconcerned and out of the picture, hear a word of encouragement from hundreds of years ago.

Throughout the Old Testament, God’s people faced one crisis after another. Sometimes it was their own dumb fault; sometimes it came by way of surprise attack. But no matter how they got into their troubles, “in all their affliction he was afflicted–” (Isaiah 63:9). When they hurt, He hurt. When they suffered, He suffered.

God has not lost the directions to your house. He’s not waiting to work you in between 3:00 and 4:00 next Wednesday. God feels. He grieves. He knows what you’re going through. You’re not the only one hurting here. And His is the kind of hurt that knows how to help you.

Lord, thank you that you haven’t forgotten me. It’s good to know you’re a God who’s really alive, who’s really here, and who genuinely cares. I’m counting on that today.( By Coach Joe Gibbs, Scripture references changed to KJV)

PEACE WITH YOUR ENEMIES

April 17, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“When a man’s ways please the LORD, He maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him”   (Proverbs 16:7).

I must see that my ways please the LORD. Even then I shall have enemies; and, perhaps, all the more certainly because I endeavor to do that which is right. But what a promise this is! The LORD will make the wrath of man to praise Him and abate it so that it shall not distress me.

He can constrain an enemy to desist from harming me, even though he has a mind to do so. This He did with Laban, who pursued Jacob but did not dare to touch him. Or He can subdue the wrath of the enemy and make him friendly, as He did with Esau, who met Jacob in a brotherly manner, though Jacob had dreaded that he would smite him and his family with the sword. The LORD can also convert a furious adversary into a brother in Christ and a fellow worker, as He did with Saul of Tarsus. Oh, that He would do this in every case where a persecuting spirit appears!

Happy is the man whose enemies are made to be to him what the lions were to Daniel in the den, quiet and companionable! When I meet death, who is called the last enemy, I pray that I may be at peace. Only let my great care be to please the LORD in all things. Oh, for faith and holiness; for these are a pleasure unto the Most High! (Faith’s Checkbook, by C. H. Spurgeon)

In this day when evil men wax worse and worse, our own family members are without natural affection, sin abounds, and nations rise against nations, let us remember that our best defense and our greatest safety is to simply please the Lord. No other goal is worthy of our pursuit. Nothing else can provide such peace. –HDS

THE PRECIOUS BLOOD

April 16, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

The precious blood of Christ.–1 Peter 1:19

Standing at the foot of the cross, we see hands, and feet, and side, all distilling crimson streams of precious blood. It is “precious” because of its redeeming and atoning efficacy. By it the sins of Christ’s people are atoned for; they are redeemed from under the law; they are reconciled to God, made one with Him. Christ’s blood is also “precious” in its cleansing power; it “cleanseth from all sin.” “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” Through Jesus’ blood there is not a spot left upon any believer, no wrinkle nor any such thing remains. O precious blood, which makes us clean, removing the stains of abundant iniquity, and permitting us to stand accepted in the Beloved, notwithstanding the many ways in which we have rebelled against our God. The blood of Christ is likewise “precious” in its preserving power. We are safe from the destroying angel under the sprinkled blood. Remember it is God’s seeing the blood which is the true reason for our being spared. Here is comfort for us when the eye of faith is dim, for God’s eye is still the same. The blood of Christ is “precious” also in its sanctifying influence. The same blood which justifies by taking away sin, does in its after-action, quicken the new nature and lead it onward to subdue sin and to follow out the commands of God. There is no motive for holiness so great as that which streams from the veins of Jesus. And “precious,” unspeakably precious, is this blood, because it has an overcoming power. It is written, “They overcame through the blood of the Lamb.” How could they do otherwise? He who fights with the precious blood of Jesus, fights with a weapon which cannot know defeat. The blood of Jesus! sin dies at its presence, death ceases to be death: heaven’s gates are opened. The blood of Jesus! we shall march on, conquering and to conquer, so long as we can trust its power! HAPPINESS HUNTERS

April 15, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

A higher degree of personal piety, will promote
a higher degree of personal happiness.

“Sin and sorrow are bound together— Hence man increases
in misery–as he increases in sin. It is upon this
principle that the devil is the most miserable
being in the universe–because he is the most
depraved.

So, on the other hand, there is an inseparable
connection between holiness and happiness. God
is the most happy being in the universe–because
He is the most holy. And the happiness of His
people is just in proportion as they resemble
Him in righteousness and true holiness.

Heaven is a world of supreme happiness,
because it is a world of supreme holiness.

Hell is a world of supreme misery,
because sin is there fully developed.

God has so ordered it, that our comfort and happiness
in this world can only be found in a pious life. For the
last six thousand years mankind have been happiness
hunters
. In all ages and lands the eager query has been,
“Who will show us any good?” But every device has been
a failure! The recorded and unrecorded experience of all
has been, “All is vanity and vexation of spirit!” We can
no more expect to find happiness in the pursuits and
objects of this world–than we may expect to find
luscious grapes growing at the icy North Pole.

But in the likeness and service of Christ, is found
a happiness which is pure, elevating, perennial,
inexhaustible–a happiness that will go with us
in all conditions, all lands, and all worlds!

The great cause of all the sadness and depression
in the followers of Christ, is the small degree of their
piety. The only reason why they are disconsolate,
is because they “follow the Lord afar off.” One single
uncrucified, unbemoaned sin–will not only destroy
all pious enjoyment–but open the soul to the devil,
with his whole black train of guilt and misery. It
matters not what this sin is. Any one sin habitually
indulged in, whether it is pride, malice, backbiting,
covetousness, filling the mind with unholy images,
or murmuring under adverse providences–will
exclude from the soul all pious enjoyment.

After all, the great secret of being happy, is
to be holy.
He who grows in practical piety has
opened a thousand sources of true bliss.

The “golden fruit of happiness” grows only on the
“tree of holiness”. If happiness is sought in any
other way than by being holy–it is sought in vain.

(By Cornelius Tyree, 1859).
