MORNING MANNA         5-23-24

MORNING MANNA             5-23-24

JUST AS I AM

”—–him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.–“ John 6:37

Physical ailments can really get us down. Sometimes the nicest people in the world can get as cranky as a she bear protecting her cubs–nobody wants to get anywhere near them. Such was the case with Charlotte Elliott. At the age of thirty her health began to fail and she was soon an invalid. It wasn’t long before her sweet disposition turned sour. With her body racked with pain living became a constant burden.

When a preacher visited Charlotte at her home one evening, she complained–“If God loved me, He would not have treated me this way”.

The wise preacher responded kindly, but with boldness, “You are tired of yourself, aren’t you?”

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“You are holding to your hate and anger because you have nothing else in the world to cling to”, he said. Then he proceeded to explain God’s grace through Jesus Christ, and told her she could come to Christ just as she was and be saved. That struck a note.

Charlotte was deeply impressed at the thought of coming to Christ just as she was, and she trusted Christ as her Savior later that evening.

Fourteen years later, on the anniversary of her new birth, she penned the words to the famous hymn,”Just As I Am”. She couldn’t forget  the wonderful privilege of being able to come to Christ just as she was. So can you!

That was true then and it’s true now. It was true of Charlotte and it’s true for you. We need not, in fact we cannot, make any changes that would make us acceptable to God. We come to Him as we are or not at all. Our only plea and our only hope is the shed blood of Christ, the Lamb of God. Will you come to Him right now, you can come just as you are! But remember this, I can come to Jesus just as I am, but when I do I won’t remain as I was! As Paul said, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”( 2 Cor.5:17). – HDS

MORNING MANNA             5-22-24
ROUGH ROADS
Growing up in the Ozarks I know a lot about rough roads. I’ve bounced along many miles of dirt and gravel roads, and it wasn’t comfortable. However, today I want to talk to you about rough roads of a different kind.

A great many years ago Moses pronounced this blessing upon Asher–“Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.”(Deut. 33:25). Asher had been allotted a portion of the land that was filled with hills and valleys—rough and rugged terrain. But, for us the application goes beyond a specific geographical location. It reminds us that there are many rough roads of various sorts in life. This is especially true if we are on the right road. Sometimes there are easier routes, but they do not lead us to our divinely ordained purpose.

Sadly most people take the “easy” route rather than the essential route. They think it is the most pleasant path, but that’s not really true.It is a road that leads to ruin and regret rather than reward. They choose a path to be trod with velvet slippers, a flower-strewn pathway, but there is no joy in their journey, nor sense of satisfaction at the end of their road. Their choice is that of a child rather than a champion.

The Christian pilgrim’s path is different. He isn’t wondering about his purpose nor wandering about aimlessly. He is a dedicated disciple and he has a goal in view. Directed by the map of God’s Word, he travels a road appointed by the Lord. Although it is a rough road it is the right road and he expects it to be difficult. Like the disciples on the storm-tossed sea, he is in the storm and will of God at the same time. He knows doing the will of God will expose him to problems rather than exempt him from them. And expecting problems is the first step in preparing for them. Wishing they didn’t exist won’t make them go away. So, the wise man readies himself for the reality of rough roads.

But how do we get ready? The answer is found in the command to live by faith. We aren’t just invited to trust God, we are commanded to do so. We either live by faith or live in sin. We triumph over our trials only by trusting in God. Just as Asher could cling to this glorious truth we can claim the precious promises of God which prepares us to prevail. They assure us that God will provide help for hard places; strength for all seasons— whether it be the day of difficulty, doubt, danger, or death. There is not a single day when we are without help from God.Armed with faith in God’s promises we are equipped to endure!

We don’t always know exactly what to prepare for. The nature of our problems vary– it’s one thing today and another thing tomorrow, but regardless of the specifics the solution is the same. We must acquaint ourselves with the Word of God and believe He will keep His promises. His precious promises are numerous and we can always find at least one for anything we will ever encounter.

For Asher the promise was, “Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be”. Isn’t that a marvelous thought? It is a word of assurance for a man anticipating adversity. He knows very well that the road is rough and rugged. He knows he will need divine aid and that’s exactly what he is promised. This is not only a prophecy of rough roads, it is a promise of reliable resources that bring relief! When he feels trapped in the cold shadow of some dark valley, that feels like a grave, he can cheer himself by living in the sunlight of God’s exceeding and great promise”(2 Peter 1:4).

Here’s something else we need to remember–Asher’s allotment was by divine appointment rather than accident. There are no accidents with God. Long before Asher ever received his portion of the land, God knew exactly what it would be like. The same is true of you. Everyone’s circumstances are different. In Asher’s day the land was divided up among the tribes and it was not all the same. In His great wisdom God gives to each that which they would have chosen for themselves were they as smart as God. Don’t curse your circumstances. Consider them to be what they are–divine appointments, although they are often rough roads. Get ready for them by searching out the sure promises related to  your situation.

If the road is rough to the point that shoes of iron and brass are required, so shall it be! God always provides what He promises. So as we journey down the rough road of life let it be with this blessed assurance– in Christ we have everything we need for anything that might come our way. Remember–“as thy days”, regardless of how difficult,”so shall thy strength be”. Think about it! HDS

SUFFERING SAINTS
“And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;“- Heb.11:36-37

If you haven’t read Hebrews 11:33-40 lately I suggest you do so today. We tend to forget what a great price God’s people have paid for being true to the faith. What they suffered was horrible, and in some parts of the world it still happens today. Why do we feel that we deserve better? Are we better? Of course not. The fact of the matter is that if we live godly we will encounter persecution ( 2Timothy 3:12). Good people often have bad problems. Saints suffer. You can’t judge a person on the severity of their suffering—some of the best people have had the worst problems. But you can tell a great deal about a person’s character by their attitude toward their afflictions. We may mourn, but we must not murmur.

How we respond to our trials is crucial. If we get bitter instead of better, if we murmur and complain, if we fret and fume we make ourselves and others miserable. We lose our credibility as “believers”. The moment we act as though God is being unfair we toss our testimony out the window. When we rant and rave we cut off the line of communication with others and lose the chance to be a witness to them.

It’s when we accept what God allows or appoints with a sweet spirit that others sit up and take notice. Then their ear is open and their heart is receptive. Now we have an opportunity to show others the difference that Jesus can make! We have it far better than we deserve and much easier than some others, such as those described in Hebrews 11:36-38. Our pay-day is someday. We have no reason to believe that we can or should expect life to be a bed-of- roses. To the contrary–our Lord warned us of troubles and trials. He Himself suffered beyond anything that we can describe. Why should we complain?

We live in troublesome times, the days are difficult, but God’s grace is sufficient. He will empower and enable us to live victoriously. Our problems create for us a glorious opportunity to bear witness for Christ. Out of the bad can come good, just as God promised in Romans 8:28. Others have suffered, now it’s our turn. May we, by the grace of God, be as bold and brave as they were. Sustained by God’s grace we can glory in our infirmities as Paul did ( 2 Cor.12:9-10 ) That’s a life well-lived. HDS

THE PRIVILEGE OF PAIN
“ For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; ” Phil.1:29

I don’t know about you, but I get tired of hearing bad news—especially when it involves me and/or my loved ones. However, I have to remind myself–that’s the price of living, and death is the only other option. Since we live in a fallen world, no bad thing should surprise us and no good thing should go unappreciated. But just because we expect bad things that doesn’t always make it easier to accept. You might expect a root-canal, but that doesn’t mean you will enjoy it.. However if we see that in the end the pain proved to be profitable, in a strange way, you can say the pain was a privilege. Make sense?

Let’s look at it another way. As a parent I consider it one of the greatest blessings in life to have children, yet it has been hard and painful at times. You can’t have one without the other. Children spell TROUBLE. They bring tremendous pleasure, but also plenty of pain. For me and most parents, the pleasure out weighs the pain. I’ll choose my children over a care-free life any day. They are worth whatever problems the cause.

I love life! I don’t enjoy everything in life, but the experience of living is worth whatever I have to endure to have the experience. When I say,”I love life” there are many things about it that I love. At the top of the list is the pleasure of life with my wife and family, and the privilege of serving the Lord. Although it is sometimes hard being a husband, a father, and a preacher, the happiness it brings far outweighs the hardness that goes along with it.

Maybe it doesn’t work for you, but it helps me greatly to think about these things. I have to focus on my privilege of living so as to not complain about the the problems that accompany it. Whether I spend my life being content or complaining is determined by whether I view life as a privilege or a problem. How do you see life? The choice is yours–no one can make it for you. If you choose contentment no one can take it from you–you have to give it up. What will you choose?

There is so much riding on your answer I am reluctant to end this article. I feel like begging and pleading, doing everything in my power to sway your opinion. I wish I could say that I always have the perfect attitude and serve as an ideal example, but I am miles from perfect. Please don’t let my failures dissuade you from doing the right thing. I know life is tough and some of you are going through deep waters and dark valleys, and you are weary and worried. I just want to remind you that the sunshine comes after the rain, the mountain top after the valley, and pleasure after pain. Like the song says,”It will be worth it all”. It really will–you have God’s word on it. Don’t ever give up! You can find pleasure by seeing your problems as privileges because they are profitable! –  HDS, 6-3-12

HOW CAN IT BE?

Avis Marguerite Burgeson (1895-1985) lived all her life in Chicago. She attended the Moody Church, and in 1917 married Ernest Christiansen who later became a vice president of Moody Bible Institute. This is one, perhaps her finest, of the poems and hymns she wrote.

1

O Savior, as my eyes beholdThe wonders of Thy might untold,
The heavens in glorious light arrayed,
The vast creation Thou hast made—
And yet to think Thou lovest me—
My heart cries out, “How can it be?”

2

As at the cross I humbly bow
And gaze upon Thy thorn-crowned brow,
And view the precious bleeding form
By cruel nails so bruised and torn,
Knowing Thy suffering was for me,
In grief I cry, “How can it be?”

3

How can it be? How can it be?
Was ever grace so full and free!
From heights of bliss to depths of woe
In loving kindness Thou didst go,
From sin and shame to rescue me—
O Love Divine, How can it be?

Refrain:How can it be? How can it be?
That God should love a soul like me,
O how can it be?

Here is the answer, “.. God is love” 1 John 4:8,16
