BETTER HIGHER UP

“But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.”-1 Peter 4:13

The famous preacher D.L. Moody told the story about a Christian woman who was always bright, cheerful, and optimistic, even though she was confined to her room because of illness. She lived in an attic apartment on the fifth floor of an old, rundown building. A friend decided to visit her one day and brought along another woman—a person of great wealth. Since there was no elevator, the two ladies began the long climb upward.

When they reached the second floor, the well-to-do woman commented, “What a dark and filthy place!” Her friend replied, “It’s better higher up.” When they arrived at the third landing, the remark was made, “Things look even worse here.” Again the reply, “It’s better higher up.” The two women finally reached the attic level, where they found the bedridden saint of God. A smile on her face radiated the joy that filled her heart. Although the room was clean and flowers were on the window sill, the wealthy visitor could not get over the stark surroundings in which this woman lived. She blurted out, “It must be very difficult for you to be here like this!” Without a moment’s hesitation the shut-in responded, “It’s better higher up.”

While she could have focused on her suffering, the old woman realized that her pain was temporary and that one day she’d be in Heaven where things were better.

Even so, if we are to endure our suffering and remain faithful to God, we must remember that our trials and pains are only temporary. First Peter 4:13 says, “But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.”

According to God’s Word, we can rejoice during times of adversity. Because Christ has suffered and endured adversity on the Cross, we can take part of that suffering and have our sins forgiven. Knowing we are saved and are taking part in Christ’s suffering, we can rejoice!

These trials can be times of joy! When we compare our trials with the trials and suffering our Lord went through, we have no need to be discouraged. God is in control! And because He has suffered the same adversity, we can look to Him for help during these times.

Rejoicing comes through putting your confidence in the Lord. Too often we can face the challenges of life and try to tackle them by ourselves. But God wants us to step aside and let Him work out the difficulties. When we realize that Christ is in control and will take care of the trial, we can rejoice!

Are you rejoicing in your time of adversity? Are you looking to Christ as your source of strength? The way to overcome adversity and to have joy in times of suffering is by looking to the Cross for strength. Spend time reflecting on Christ’s suffering today. Take time to read John 18–19. Then as you go about your day, remember that in light of all that the Lord went through, our sufferings are minimal!- copied- HDS

LOVING GOD

James Meikle (1730-1799) was a surgeon in England who devoted his life to writing devotional articles so as to encourage others to meditate on spiritual subjects. and, as you see in the following article, he was brutally honest about his imperfections. He said:

“To love you—is my honor. That I may love you—is my privilege. And in as far as I do love you—so far am I happy. How is it, then, that this divine duty of loving you meets with so much opposition! Hell and earth bid me hate you; sinners will not let me avow my love to you; corruption within, cares and concerns without, check my love; unbelief cools my love, “for faith works by love,” and love bears proportion to faith. Immoderate fear, and love of anything besides you, is a clog to my love; and imperfect apprehensions of your glorious self, deaden my love to you. In what a melancholy case am I! It is death to live, and not to love; yet I live, and cannot love you! I can love my friend, and hate my enemy; but I cannot love my God, nor hate my enmity. I can love what I think beautiful in the creature, with love more than fit; why then not love the Rose of heaven, the chief among ten thousand, who is altogether lovely, and whose love is, like himself, unchangeable!

What makes the triumphant eternal state so glorious, so desirable—but because their love is perfect without fear, their adorations without distractions, their conceptions bright without misapprehensions, their praise without interruption, their knowledge clear without confusion, their vision perfect, their views fixed; and all their souls strengthened in God, replenished with God, and going out on God.

In loving you, I begin the felicity of eternity, and anticipate the bliss above. I will love you for yourself, and your saints for your sake, for your image shining in them. I will hate my enmity against you, and grieve that I cannot love you as you deserve; and wait for that day when I shall love you as I desire—because I shall see and enjoy you as you are!”

Meikle’s words might seem strange to some, but others know exactly what he spoke of. They are the ones who understand what the song writer meant when he said,”Prone to wander how I feel it, prone to leave the God I love”. Those who have the greatest love for God are those who realize that their love falls short of what He deserves.- HDS

“Certainly I will be with you!”
 Author unknown, 1872
“Certainly I will be with you!” Exodus 3:12

Then, Lord, I will go forward. I would not venture a step — if You did not accompany me; but if You are with me, then all is well.

With You I will go forth to my daily business in the world — for You will keep me amidst its temptations and snares.

With You I will labor in Your vineyard — for You will make Your strength perfect in my weakness.

With You I will walk the thorny path of trial — for You will furnish me with shoes of iron and brass.

With You I will enter the field of conflict — for You will teach my hands to war, and will cover my head in the day of battle.

With You I will enter the chamber of pain and weakness — for You will make all my bed in my sickness.

With You I will walk through the valley of the shadow of death, and will fear no evil — for Your rod and Your staff will comfort me.

With You I will enter the waters of Jordan — for You will bear me through, and land me on the shore of the heavenly Canaan.

“Surely I am with you always — even to the end of the age!” Matthew 28:20

“I will never leave you or forsake you!” Hebrews 13:5

”SURPRISE SURPRISE!”

”Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”–Proverbs 27:1

Gomer Pyle had it right when he said,”Surprise, Surprise!” Life is full of surprises. None of us know what a day may hold. While we’ve gotten pretty good at predicting the weather, there are some things we just can’t predict. Experience has taught us to expect the unexpected. This very day, some will receive a notice that they have been laid off from their job. Others will receive a bad and sad diagnoses from their doctor. Some will be told by their spouse that they want a divorce. Indeed this will be a sad day for a lot of folks. But, on the otherhand, some will receive wonderful news today, and they will be on the mountain top. The one sure thing is that we don’t know what lies ahead.

Now, here’s the good news. As uncertain as the future is, we know that God never changes. He is “the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.”(Hebrews 13:8). You can count on God! Regardless of what happens today, God is just as loving, wise, faithful, and powerful as He was yesterday. And, He will be the same tomorrow. You can rely on God regardless of your situation. His promises are true. But if you refuse to trust and obey Him don’t be surprised when things get worse instead of better.

Fix your thoughts upon the Lord and trust Him to use today’s experience for some good and His glory. He can do it. Whether sunshine or rain, or pleasure or pain, God can make something glorious out of your grief. Knowing this is true should make this day special—- do as God commands and live life to the fullest! – HDS

THE TEST OF VICTORY
“David behaveth himself wisely.”
1 Sam.17:55-18:1-5

The hour of victory is a more severe moral test than the hour of defeat. Many a man can brave the perils of adversity who succumbs to the seductions of prosperity. He can stand the cold better than the heat! He is enriched by failure, but “spoilt by success.” To test the real quality of a man, let us regard him just when he has slain Goliath! “David behaved himself wisely”!

He was not “eaten up with pride.” He developed no “side.” He went among his friends as though no Goliath had ever crossed his way. He was not for ever recounting the triumph, and fishing for the compliments of his audience. He “behaved wisely.” So many of us tarnish our victories by the manner in which we display them. We put them into the shop-window, and they become “soiled goods.”

And in this hour of triumph David made a noble friend. In his noonday he found Jonathan, and their hearts were knit to each other in deep and intimate love. It is beautiful when our victories are so nobly borne that they introduce us into higher fellowships, and the friends of heaven become our friends.–J H Jowett
