MORNING MANNA 2-5-23

MORNING MANNA            2-5-23

LEARNING TO LISTEN
“A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels;”–Prov. 1:5

As a boy one of the most irritating things I heard was, “I told you so!”, or “Didn’t I tell you?” And as a father to eight I have often dropped that bomb on my kids. I didn’t want to hear it and I’m sure my children felt the same, but sometimes we all need reminders like that. Being forced to face our failures can be a good, although unpleasant, thing. Especially when we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Thinking about this, I can’t help but wonder what God thinks when we turn a deaf ear to His instructions and warnings. Although He speaks out of the depths of His great wisdom and glorious love we tend to ignore what He says– to our own detriment. In doing this we deprive ourselves of His blessings and expose ourselves to great danger. Foolish indeed!

Whether as a child or a Christian I’m sure we can all look back and think of those times when we wish we had listened. And that reminds me of another one of the least favorite things my parents said–“When are you going to learn to listen?” Yeah, I bet you’ve heard that too. And you probably responded just like I did– with a blank stare. But it is actually a good question and worthy of our consideration. When will we learn to listen? After we’ve humiliated ourselves? Hurt ourselves? Harmed others? Hit rock-bottom? Would we not be better off to listen and learn?

God has given us competent counsel, clear commands, wise warnings, and precious promises. He demands that we listen and He deserves to be heard. If we refuse we have only ourselves to blame for the outcome. If we listen and learn we have only God to praise. Without His aid we neither would nor could do as we should. God still speaks today, and “A wise man will hear–“. Are you listening?—HDS, 1-8-14

ANGER MANAGEMENT

“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:”- Eph.4:24

Pastor Tom Goodman said,”I read about a woman whose neighbor played his music way too loud in the apartment below her. Finally, she had enough and yelled at him to turn it down. He just taunted her by banging a broom handle on his ceiling. This infuriated her so much that she jumped up in the air and slammed both feet on the floor.

Here’s why the altercation made the newspaper. The force of her landing broke both her legs about 4 inches below the kneecap. The moral of the story? When you lose your temper in a disagreement, it will leave you without a leg to stand on.

David needed help with his out-of-control rage at one point. Does that surprise you? I mean, David loved to write psalms about nimble deer and quiet waters and night skies. He was “a man after God’s own heart” who “served God’s purpose in his own generation” (1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:36). And yet in 1 Samuel 25, we have an account of how he let anger get the best of him. Had Abigail not intervened, his rage would have led to disastrous consequences.

The story convicts me. No matter how much we love God, no matter how gentle we think we are, no matter how much we’ve grown spiritually, anger can get the best of us.Thankfully, the Bible is a wonderful Anger Management Manual”.

Remember this, when anger gets the best of you it brings out the worst in you!- HDS

WHAT EVERYONE NEEDS
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, temperance. Against such there is no
law.”- Galatians 5:22-23

When it comes to radical spiritual transformations, it’s easy for us to
think of saints like John Newton (from slave trader to pastor), the
apostle Paul (from persecutor to protector of the church), and Nicky Cruz
(from street thug to street evangelist). But the truth is, every follower
of Jesus has been transformed. Before you met Jesus, you were something
that needed radical transformation–what the Bible calls a “natural” man
or woman (1 Corinthians 2:14). You may have been polite, friendly,
generous, and well-educated–hardly someone who appeared in need of
transformation. But in God’s eyes, the need was readily apparent. Only God
can see the fallen human nature that does not know how to give glory to
the Creator. If you think for a moment about your life before and since
meeting Jesus, you’ll see the transforming work only God could accomplish.
Whether the changes are subtle or significant, they are the work of the
Holy Spirit within you, reproducing the life of Jesus (Romans 8:29). Don’t
forget today to thank God for the changes He has made.

Unless God changes a person’s heart, nothing lasting will be achieved.- Will Metzger

COMFORT

“He knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold” – Job 23:10

Are you feeling the weight of some crushing burden or heartache? Job’s words speak immeasurable comfort in the midst of any trial.

First, remember he knows the way that I take. God is not unaware of your difficulty, nor is he insensitive to the pain you are feeling. He knows. He is intimately acquainted with your situation and your condition.

And if the all-wise, all-powerful, loving God is allowing one of his people to pass through affliction, you can rest assured that there is a purpose behind it. You may not as yet see it; you may not now even agree with it. But rest assured that when he has tried you, you will come out of the trial as refined, purified gold.

He hath tried me. The source of the fire may be cruel or malicious intentions on the part of others, but ultimately God is the one who is controlling the temperature and allowing you to pass through it. In Job’s case, the Bible reveals that the devil himself was the author of his sufferings; and yet Job correctly affirmed that the trial was coming through the hand of the Lord (2:10).

Believer, rest in this wonderful assurance, that God is at once next to you in your trial and on his throne in heaven. He knows the way you are taking, and is ruling over every detail of your difficulty until you are sanctified to his glory.- Baptist Bible Hour

GOD LOVES THE WORLD

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.”- Matthew 23:37–39

Most of the world religions throughout history have featured stern and largely unapproachable gods. These gods often demanded great sacrifices in order to be appeased. One of the distinctive traits of Christianity is that God Himself provided the sacrifice for the atonement of men’s sins. Rather than demanding that we make the payment for redemption, Jesus—God in the flesh—came to make it. John the Baptist was the first human voice to announce Jesus’ redemptive role. “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

There are many things in the world around us that are in direct opposition to God, and it seems that the more evil is displayed, the more it is applauded. Yet,God loves the whole world, and we too were once sinners. Even those raised in the most protective environments of church were still sinners in need of God’s love and a Saviour.

Dr. John R. Rice wrote, “God loves this world! Let me say it again, because our hearts are so calloused to the blessed truth that it makes little impression upon us—God loves this world! He loves every sinner in it. The extent of His love is beyond human comprehension. He gave His own perfect Son, to be a man, to be tempted as a man, to live a perfect life, to minister among men and then to die a shameful death of agony that men might be saved.” (Copied)
