MORNING MANNA            2-14-21

February 14, 2021 By Pastor David Stone

“ I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. ” – Psa. 34:1
Yesterday I commented on the phrase “I will meditate” and emphasized that the words “I will” speak of a commitment on the part of the writer. Today it has to do with praise — something that should be the most natural thing in the world for a Christian, but is sadly neglected.

J. R. Miller explains it like this: “It is not hard to bless the Lord at some times. There are days when all is bright. There is no sickness in our house. No recent sorrow has left our heart sad. It is easy then to bless the Lord.

But there are other times when things are different. Business is not prosperous. Or, health is broken. We begin to say this verse, but we cannot get through it. “I will bless the Lord at _____.”

We cannot bless the Lord for the broken health, for the empty chair. Yet there the words stand. We cannot make them read: “I will bless the Lord at some times: His praise shall be in my mouth on certain days – days when the sun shines.”

It is not our business to write Bible verses; it is our business rather to bring our lives up to the standard of the inspired words. So we must learn to say the verse just as it is written.

We must learn to bless the Lord on the dark days as well as the bright days. We must learn to praise God in pain as well as in pleasure.”
Our problem is that when problems arise we tend to pout rather than praise. We act as though God is dead, deaf, mighty sick, or unconcerned – none of which is true. Such an attitude in adversity trashes our testimony and gives others the wrong impression about God. So rather than murmuring about our misery we ought to magnify the Lord. He is worthy of our worship at all times and His praise should be continually on our lips (Heb. 13:15). Regardless of how bad things are we should say “I will bless the LORD at all times“. – HDS

“I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.” – Psa. 119:15

As a new Christian I started a Bible reading plan that takes you through the Bible in a year. While that’s a good thing to do, I soon found myself wanting to read through it twice a year and was racing through the scriptures as fast as I could without giving much thought to what I was reading. While that’s better than not reading at all there is something much better. We should honor God’s Word by reading it slowly and thoughtfully.

Stop worrying about how much you are reading and spend more time thinking about what you’re reading. Our text tells us that we need to meditate on the Word of God. I understand that, due to the Eastern religions and the new age philosophy, many people misunderstand when we talk about meditating. They especially despise the term “Christian meditation”. The Bible, however, makes it clear that meditation is necessary and demanded. The word “meditate” means “ponder, muse, think, or study” and that’s essential to an understanding of God’s Word. Take your concordance and look up all the references to it.

One person described meditation as “the focused contemplation of the renewed mind upon the treasury of divine truth”. Another said, “meditation is to the soul as marination is to a fine cut of meat or as soil assimilation is for healthy crops”. Whatever you call it, as you read God’s word you need to slow down, pray, and give serious consideration to the words.

Now notice the first words to our text – “I will“. That speaks of a definite commitment and that’s what it takes. A mere half-hearted resolution won’t get the job done. Our intentions might be good, but it takes a sincere commitment for us to carry through with it. There’s always something or someone trying to distract us and if we aren’t careful we will put it off, neglect what we need, and miss the benefits of the Bible.

To encourage you to get started I suggest that you spend some alone time meditating on Psalms 1:1-3. It commences by speaking about the “Blessed” man- of whom it says “in his law doth he meditate day and night“. Then it continues by reminding us that “he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; “. It concludes by saying, “And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper”. – HDS

“And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.’- Psa. 50:15

Here we see a brief but beautiful picture of prayer. It consist of four main lines of thought that should encourage us to call upon the Lord consistently.

I. YOUR PRESENT PROBLEM – “the day of trouble”
This opens the door to a vast array of thoughts. Based on experience, observation, and scriptures we know that troubles are to be expected, that they come in many forms, and can come in different degrees of severity.

II. YOUR PRIVILEGE OF PRAYER – “And call upon me”
God’s throne of grace is always available (Heb. 4:16) and He is able to meet every need (Phil. 4:19). So, if you are —
— perplexed, ask for wisdom.
— enslaved, ask for deliverance.
— weak, ask for strength.
— guilty, ask for pardon.
— in darkness, ask for light.
— miserable, ask for comfort.
— fearful, ask for courage.
The nature of your problem makes no difference. God is able ( Eph. 3:20).

III. YOUR PROVISION – “I will deliver thee”
Here is a precious promise that pictures the prospect of prayer. While we can’t dictate the time, means, or manner of deliverance we can depend upon God to answer at the time and in the way that is best. Notice the —
— Speaker -“I will”. This promise comes from God who cannot lie – the One who has all power, is infinitely wise, and has never failed.
— Subject – “deliver”. God knows what we need and provides it. He does more than just give us a pat on the back or a word of cheer. He delivers us!
— Self – “you”.God takes a personal interest in each of us. You will never meet a person He doesn’t love, nor see a need He can’t meet, if we trust Him.

IV. YOUR PROSPECT – “And thou shalt glorify me”. How about that? The very purpose for which we were created and the reason why we exist will be realized when we obey God by calling upon Him in our day of trouble. And that is of far greater importance than us getting our needs met. When we pray as we should it gives God the opportunity to show Himself strong on our behalf. Not only is our need met, our Lord is magnified and we are satisfied. Shall we then not pray? I’m praying that you will, – HDS

BIGGER THAN A MOUNTAIN

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. ” – Phil. 4:13

I just read the following story that ought to give every Christian hope for their hardships. In 1924 a group of explorers tried to climb Mount Everest and failed. They attempted twice to tackle the mountain but with no success. The group lost two of its members in the second effort. After the failed endeavor they met with a group of supporters in London to raise funds for yet another expedition.

On stage, one of the hikers stood up and gave a rousing speech of determination. He was persuaded that his team could indeed conquer the mountain if given enough time and support. He closed his remarks by stating, “Mount Everest cannot grow larger, but we can.”

The obstacles we face and the mountains we climb can sometimes appear daunting and unmovable. The one advantage we have however is that we can grow, we can get stronger, and we can become wiser. It takes a spirit of resolve and faith to climb the mountains of life. Our failures can actually become our successes if we properly glean from our experiences.

Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Walk up the mountain one more time. Everest doesn’t get any bigger, but you can!

“And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?” – Mark 4:40

The disciples appeared to be in danger, and fear filled their hearts. They did not realize that they were the care and charge of Jesus, or else, knowing Him, their fears could have had no place.

Beloved, you are in the hands of your loving Saviour. He has charge of you and all your concerns. He has numbered the very hairs of your head, and watches over you every moment, by night, as well as by day. He is ever present, His eye cannot be diverted from you, His omnipotence is engaged to defend you, His fulness to supply you, His wisdom to guide you, and all His perfections will be glorified in your everlasting holiness and happiness. He says, “I am glorified in them.”

Why are you so fearful? Jesus is a very present help, He is a Friend that loveth at all times, He is your shield, and will be your exceeding great reward. But perhaps you have wandered from Him; your conscience accuses you, and Satan tempts you to despond; go, go, and return unto Him, delay not a moment, cast yourself, guilty as you are, at His feet, confess all, and give yourself to Him afresh. He will receive you graciously, love you freely, and restore to you the joys of His salvation.

The saints should never be dismay’d,
Nor sink in hopeless fear;
For when they least expect His aid,
The Saviour will appear.
