MORNING MANNA          11/19/20

November 19, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”- Psa. 119:160“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” – Psa. 119:105

I just read about Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. a doctor who became interested in the use of ether to anesthetize patients who were having procedures done. To better understand its effects, he decided to administer it to himself one day. He found himself in a dreamy state and awoke believing he had suddenly grasped the key to all the mysteries of the universe. But he was unable to recall what he had learned. So he decided to put himself under again with a stenographer by his side to record whatever he said. Coming out of the daze, Holmes asked his stenographer if he’d said anything that might give insight to the mysteries of the universe. The assistant looked down at her notebook and read, “The entire universe is permeated with a strong odor of turpentine.”

Holmes arrived at a wrong conclusion because he looked in the wrong place for the answer. That’s a common problem with man. Some things will be with us for the rest of our lives, and one of those is questions. Regardless of how much we study, how many degrees we get, of what our IQ is, there will always be questions. No one understands everything about anything. And in many cases that doesn’t really matter. But other things matter a great deal. They are of great importance and we must take great care in where we look for the answers. There is only one source that is absolutely trustworthy and that’s God’s Word.

We ought to think of the Bible as God’s answer book for man’s needs. It has the answers to all the most important questions and issues of life. And to sum it all up in a word, it is “Christ”. Andrae Crouch wrote a song that said, “Jesus is the answer for the world today. Above Him there’s no other, Jesus is the way”. Truer words were never spoken! “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” ( John 14:6). Now notice where Jesus sends us for the solution to our questions – “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” – John 5:39. – HDS

MORNING MANNA          11/18/20

November 18, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”- James 1:22

Just about every Christian is familiar with the phrase “be ye doers of the word” (Ja. 1:22) – we hear it over and over, but not everyone sees the big picture. In their minds being a doer of the Word involves obedience to only certain parts of God’s Word. They fail to see it as all inclusive. However, it isn’t just certain parts of the Word that we are commanded to obey. We are to obey all of it. We are never at liberty to leave out the parts that we dislike.

Some folks break their arms patting themselves on the back over their obedience to one part of God’s Word, when they actually deserve a kick in the rear for ignoring other parts of the Word. They are proud of their church attendance, Bible reading, prayers, contributions, etc., yet they ignore the greater duty to love their neighbor (Matt. 22:37-39). Some people are Bible believers only to the extent that it says something they want to believe or do. They reject what they resent – which is just about everything that isn’t fun and easy.

Far too many acknowledge the truth without applying it. They recognize it but refuse to do it. They receive it but do not respond to it. They expect it from others, but excuse themselves. But God doesn’t. He expects everyone to obey everything. He expects all from all – complete conformity to His commands. And partial obedience is disobedience. We have no right to pick and choose what we will do. We are to always do all that God demands – He deserves it! HDS

MORNING MANNA          11/17/20

“Lord, to whom shall we go?” – John 6:68

In these days when we hear so many say, “One religion is just as good as another” we need to give serious consideration to this question. All roads might have led to Rome, but all religions do not lead to heaven. Jesus Himself made this clear in John 14:6 where He said, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Commenting on our text, Vance Havner wrote:

Where could we go? Look down all other roads and see what they have to offer. It is Christ or else. The wisdom of man, the religions of the world, have no answer to the soul’s desperate cry, “Where could I go but to the Lord?”

Where would we go? If we do not follow the Light we go out into darkness, utter and eternal. We would go to hell if we did not go to Him. “He that believeth not is condemned already.”

Where should we go? To Jesus of course. Plain common sense tells us that nothing else satisfies. He has proven His case long ago. We ought to be Christians. God commands us to repent and believe.

It is a matter of eternal alternatives: saved or lost, justified or condemned, heaven or hell. “He that is not with me is against me.”

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man.” “I am the way.” Which way are you going?

MORNING MANNA             11/16/20

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”- Matt. 7:21

Have you ever known someone who had a terminal disease and didn’t know it? The doctor diagnosed the disease and shared the prognosis with the family, but the person had not yet been informed. In some cases the patient might feel good and think all is well–but they are dying. As heartbreaking as this is there is something worse – much worse.

Multitudes think they are saved and they’re not. They feel they are saved, but the facts say otherwise–there is absolutely no evidence that they are. I realize that we humans are imperfect judges, and we certainly are not “The Judge”. I also know that on occasion we all act in un-Christian ways, leaving room for others to doubt us. But the fact remains that when a person is truly saved there will be some evidence of it (Matthew 7:20). How sad it is to see people breezing through life thinking they are Christians when they’re not. It hurts all the more when they are members of your family or dear friends.

I’m not talking about those who are merely pretending, those who try to convince others that they are saved when they know they’re not. There are many of them and they are to be pitied. But my focus now is on those who really believe they are saved although they aren’t, those such as our Lord described in Matthew 7:21-23. They have a hope, but it is a false hope – making them the hardest people on earth to reach, because they do not see their need. They are confident, but they are condemned. Their end is tragic–they live and die in hope and wake up in hell.

The most common problem with these folks is their ignorance of the Bible.  They simply do not know what the Word of God teaches in regards to salvation. They think they do, but they don’t.  Sadly, most of them aren’t interested in learning any more than they know. They feel quite comfortable in their ignorance and become irate if you even suggest that they might not be saved.  They are oblivious to the obvious.

At this very moment there are millions who claim to be Christians when there is no scriptural evidence that they are.  How can you claim to be a Christian when you live in habitual disobedience to God (see I John 3:6-10)?  Yet multitudes of professing Christians refuse to attend God’s house, rob God by refusing to tithe, and live in open rebellion against Him.  How can you claim to love God when you don’t love your neighbor?  How can you claim to be forgiven when you refuse to forgive?  How can you say Jesus is your Lord and then refuse to do what He says (Luke 6:46).

If this describes you, you need to heed the admonition given by Paul in 2 Cor.13:5 “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.  Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?”  Dear friend, don’t make the mistake of assuming all is well just because you feel good about it.  Don’t assume that you’re saved just because you discontinued some bad habit, started attending church and was baptized.  “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).   And when you are it will make a difference in your life (2 Cor.5:17).  Don’t be among those of whom the Lord says, “I never knew you: depart from me—” (Matt.7:23). – HDS

MORNING MANNA           11/15/20

November 15, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”- 1 Sam. 15:22

Many people set a great deal more stress on religious rituals, than upon practical obedience. They will be faithful in attendance upon church services, devout and reverent in worship–and yet in their daily life, they will disregard the plain commandments of God! They fill the week with selfishness, pride, bitterness, and evil-speaking, and then go to church on Sunday, with great show of devotion, to engage in the worship of God!

But what God desires before our worship can be acceptable, is that we obey what He commands us. He bids us to love one another, to be unselfish, patient, kind, honest, pure, true; and unless we obey these commands, our religious rituals, no matter how conspicuous, how costly, how seemingly devout and reverent, are not acceptable to God!

There are many other phases of the truth. It is exact obedience which God desires, and not something else of our own substituted. When he tells a mother to care for her child, He is not satisfied if she neglects that duty to attend church. When God wants a man to help a poor family in some obscure street, He is not satisfied if instead of that lowly service, the man does some brilliant thing that seems to bring ten times as much honor to the Lord.

The supreme thing in Christian life–is to obey God; without obedience nothing else counts. The obedience must also be exact, just what God commands, not something else. “If you love Me–you will keep My commandments.” John 14:15 (J R Miller)
