MORNING MANNA         3/3/20

March 3, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” – Lam. 3:21-23

I read about a fellow who stood on a street corner every day shouting “Ain’t it awful!”. As he did so he held a newspaper high in the air enticing people to buy one. He was aware that bad news gets attention and he shouted the same thing every day because he knew each new day brings some bad news with it. And that seems to be all some people ever think about.

People flock to bad news like buzzards to carrion. Terrible tragedy makes it to the front page and the headlines of the TV news. People seem to be addicted to it. But their obsession comes with a price. Millions live in deep depression because they just can’t stop thinking about bad and sad news. And depression can be destructive in numerous ways.

Even great men like Jeremiah are not exempt from this danger. For forty long years he warned Israel of impending judgment. He witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem and the dispersal of his people into captivity. Amazingly he survived and remained true to God. He did so because he was confident that God would fulfill His promises. He said, “For the LORD will not cast off for ever: But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.” – Lam. 3:31-32

Even so, we have precious promises assuring us of God’s care in time of trouble. As the song says, “Hold on my child joy comes in the morning”. Indeed it does. If we are true believers we derive deliverance from our dependence upon God’s promises, knowing He who promised is Faithful and True! Ain’t it awesome! – HDS

MORNING MANNA        3/2/20

March 2, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“The LORD will give strength unto His people….”–Psalms 29:11

Here we see something we all need–“strength“. Regardless of who you are or what great talents you possess, sooner or later you will face something that pushes you to your limit– and beyond. Then you realize how weak you are, and that can be frightening. What will you do? How will you cope? That’s why it is crucial for us to be mindful of God’s promises–especially this one.

Here is a promise you can rely on–” The LORD will”–that’s emphatic. There is no doubt about this. He is “Faithful” and “True”. He cannot lie. This promise comes from God Himself. Notice who it is for–“His people“. God is our Father and He is ever mindful of the needs of His children. The very hairs on their head are numbered. His all seeing eye is upon them day and night and His ear is open to hear their cry.

Regardless of how powerful the foe, or how fierce the fight, or  how frail the flesh, or how great the fear, we can rest on this promise. It is as He said in Deut. 33:25,”as thy days, so shall thy strength be“. We can entertain great expectations because we rely on His strong arm. We can rest in peace because He supplieth every need. We can rejoice in every trial, because He gives songs in the night. We can resist every temptation because the One who conquered death, hell, and the grave is with us.

If you are a child of God you have special privileges unknown to others. If you are not a part of God’s family you can be by simply trusting Christ as your Lord and Savior. Do it without delay. Then you can live every day with the blessed assurance that not one of His precious promises shall ever fail you. That’s the life! – HDS, 8/8/15

MORNING MANNA           3/1/20

March 1, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.” -Acts 16:22–25

When Paul and Silas arrived in Philippi, they were the first people to present the gospel there. Among those they met was a young slave girl whose owners used her demonic possession to gain profit from fortune telling. After Paul cast the demon out of the girl, her owners were furious at the loss of their easy money and demanded the preachers be arrested. Despite the fact that it was contrary to Roman law, they were beaten and thrown into jail.

This was completely unjust, both on a moral level where they had done something that was good, and on the legal level, where they had not violated any laws. That reality did not make their wounds any less painful, or release them from the shackles that kept them from even relaxing within their cells. And the reality of that injustice also did not stop them from singing and praising God. Even though everything seemed to be going wrong, their faith remained.

All of us have good days and bad days. God is just as close and faithful in the bad days as He is in the good days. And the song in our heart and the praise on our lips does not depend on how things are going, but in whom we trust. When we realize that God never makes any mistakes, we can be joyful regardless of where we are or what we are experiencing. We do not have to allow our circumstances to dictate the joy in our hearts and in our mouths.(Daily in the Word)

MORNING MANNA         2/29/20

“Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy”.- 1 Pet. 1:16

One of the most important lessons we can learn is that being comes before doing. We hear a lot about doing things for Christ, but very little about being like Christ. We don’t seem to understand that conduct is one thing and character is another. Character is what you are and conduct is what you do. And the only way for both our attitude and actions to be appropriate is if our character is such as it should be. You can control a man’s behavior by the threat of punishment or the promise of reward, but that doesn’t mean he has character. And what you are is more important than what you do. Being is more important than behavior, beauty, or bounty. Character counts!

To succeed in living as we should — being “holy and without blame before him in love” ( Eph. 1:4) — our character must be what it ought to be – like Jesus. I love the little chorus “To Be Like Jesus”, but it takes more than singing to conform to His image. In fact, being like Jesus involves more than singing, serving, submitting to a list of rules, or seeking to imitate Jesus. To be conformed to the image of Christ we must yield ourselves to the control of the Holy Spirit who effects the change ( 2 Cor. 3:18). If you are a true believer you have a new nature and the potential for Christlikeness, but you must appropriate what God has made available to become the person He purposed you to be. – HDS

MORNING MANNA       2/28/20

February 28, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.” – Job 42:10

Of this important verse J. R. Miller wrote: A great many people who try to be comforters, only lay  thorns under aching heads. No art needs a more delicate touch, than the comforter’s. The hands of most of us are too rough to be laid on throbbing hearts. No wonder Job felt that his friends were miserable comforters, or that he was not at first in a mood to pray for them. But until he could pray for them–blessing could not come to him.

The lesson is for us. Others may have injured or grieved us in some way, and we may not be ready to forgive them. But while we feel so, we are shutting out divine blessing from ourselves. Job’s praying at length for his friends, showed that his heart was now softened toward them, that he had forgiven them. Then blessing came to him. When we can pray for one who has wronged us, misjudged us, or said unkind things of us or to us, hurting us in some way–we are in a condition to receive blessing from God.

Job was also ready now to come out of his own sorrow–to try to help others. We do not find comfort by staying in the darkness of our own grief, by thinking only of it; we must forget ourselves, and begin to serve others and seek their good, before we can find the light of God’s comfort. Selfishness in sorrow is selfishness, and selfishness in any form misses God’s blessing.
