MORNING MANNA          2/17/20

February 17, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.” — Job 2:10

An old Arab proverb says, “All sun and no rain makes a desert.” Even nature demonstrates the importance of dark clouds and wet days. Without them, life not only fails to grow but totally dries up and blows away. Nothing but sunshine would make for a barren and uninhabitable landscape.

Job realized this truth applied not only to nature but to human life as well. It would be foolish to think that God should send only those things that appear to be good without balancing them with those experiences that appear to be bad. To accept the one and refuse the other is to question God’s wisdom. As painful as it was to go through the loss of his possessions, his health and, most of all, his children, Job was unwilling to fault God. He knew it was part of God’s balance in life.

If given the option, most of us would probably choose sunshine over rain, ice cream over liver and joy over sadness. Fortunately, God doesn’t always give us a choice when it comes to things that challenge our lives. Both sorrow and gladness often come from sources over which we have no control. We can resist the trials and plead for only the “good” things, but this would be foolish. Without the balance between positives and negatives, our spiritual lives would be like the desert. The alternative is to submit to God and accept what He sends our way as part of His ultimate plan for our good.

You may not find it natural, but give thanks for the painful events that have happened in your life. Recognize them for what they are–a gift from the hand of the God who loves you. Acknowledge the truth that you need the rain as well as the sun to make your life complete. God gives you what is best for you. Trust Him and rejoice.

Without the rain, it’s hard to fully appreciate the sunshine.- Woodrow Kroll

MORNING MANNA        2/16/20

February 16, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” – 2 Cor. 5:17

Salvation is wonderful – for many reasons. It not only changes where we’re going, it changes who we are. It changes our eternal destiny, but it does even more. It also changes our earthly life. It does so to such an extent that even if there was no heaven or hell the Christian life would still be the best life possible. Salvation changes our beliefs and behavior, our attitude and our actions. We become someone we’ve never been before. We are “a new creature“.

That’s not true of only some, but rather of all who trust Christ. As Paul said, “if any man be in Christ“. Every Christian has a new life. They live because Christ “died for them, and rose again” (vs. 15). And because of who they become they “should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him” (vs. 15). Having new life “in Christ” we are to live for Christ. We don’t have the right to do as we please unless it is to please Him who died for us and reconciled us to God. We do so because “the love of Christ constraineth us” (vs. 14).

We don’t become a Christian by changing, but by being changed. We could never make ourselves acceptable to God. Instead, “he ( God) hath made us accepted in the beloved.” ( Eph. 1:6). As a result of that glorious truth we are changed and that changes everything! We are made new, different, and better! It is no wonder that we love to sing “Since Jesus Came into My Heart”. Think about it — HDS

What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought
since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long I had sought,
since Jesus came into my heart!

Refrain:
Since Jesus came into my heart,
since Jesus came into my heart,
floods of joy o’er my soul like the sea billows roll,
since Jesus came into my heart
.

MORNING MANNA           2/15/20

February 15, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;” 2 Tim.  3:13-14

Some people spend the bulk of their lives up-set, angry, and depressed due to their disappointment with the world. It appears that all they can think about is how bad, awful, and rotten the world is, and it colors their thoughts about everything else in life. You could describe their life as one long, non-stop rant. They are miserable and they spread it to others. And the fact that they are correct in their beliefs about the world’s condition leaves them feeling justified in what they do. It’s true that the world is in a terrible mess, but merely moaning about the mess doesn’t make it any better. Complaining can’t create change.

All of this is the result of unrealistic expectations. If we truly understood the nature of the world we wouldn’t be surprised by it. What do you expect from unsaved people? The world is like it is because it is what it is. And it’s not a pretty picture. It is a sinful system under the sway of Satan, it’s god. It is indeed awful, just like they say, and it’s going to get worse. The question is “What are we to do?” How should we respond? Considering what the world is and what is to come we need to consider Peter’s question, “what manner of persons ought ye to be?” ( 2 Pet. 3:11) That’s the question.

For some of us the great temptation is to crusade against the evil and try to change the world back to the good old days that we dream about. To resist that urge we must understand what we’re dealing with. We need to understand the nature of the world. We need to remember that it is cursed, corrupt, controlled, confused, and condemned. In other words it’s not something we can control or change. That’s not only beyond our ability it isn’t our assignment. Our God given mission is clear ( Matt. 28:19-20) and it has nothing to do with changing the world. The only changes that we can make are made one person at a time as people come to know Christ.

The thing that makes this so difficult is our desire for things to be better – a legitimate desire for sure. If I could have my way “____ “.  I’ll spare you the details, and some would be glad I did if they knew what I would say. I’ll just say, the world would be different. But I know the effort would be a waste. It’s not that I would mind putting forth the effort and making the sacrifices. I would gladly do that if it would help, but it wouldn’t. I say that because that’s what the Bible tells me. The world is going to get worse and worse until Jesus comes. Naturally I can and should pray, vote, and speak out but I must not allow my effort to change the world distract me from the great commission. That should always be my first order of business. Yours also.  – HDS

MORNING MANNA         2/14/20

February 14, 2020 By Pastor David Stone

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” – John 13:35

There is one unfailing mark of Christian character, wherever it is found: Love is always in it. Whatever else may be or may not be in the new life of the Christian–the scarlet thread of love is always woven into the character. God is love, and the believer in Christ, is in a measure, like God. To be a Christian is to have Christ in the heart; and Christ is love. Not to have love–is not to be a Christian.

The first effect of faith in Christ–is the springing up of love in the heart of him who believes. This love does not lie hidden–but is revealed in the life. It shows itself in love for  God; but there is no love for God–which does not also make the heart warm toward man. He who loves not his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

Christian love is not a mere beautiful sentiment, glowing like a radiant vision in the soul–but fading the moment we meet our brothers in actual life; it is a love that becomes the very mainspring of all action, the burning heart of all ambition. It is a love that makes us pitiful  toward all human sorrow, gentle toward human infirmity, helpful toward human need, patient under human unkindness and injury, and ready at every call to do and suffer and sacrifice. “…the precious blood of Christ…..” –1 Pet. 1:19

The blood of Jesus is the price of our redemption, the object of our faith, the ground of our peace, the subject of our meditation, and our constant plea at the throne of grace.

It satisfied Divine justice, and speaks peace to the humble sinner’s heart. It overcomes Satan, and cleanseth from all sin.

It purges the conscience from dead works, and leads us to joy in God. We build on it as our foundation, flee to it as our refuge, look to it as the cure for sin, and sing of it as the joy of our heart. It has made a perfect, a satisfactory, an infinite atonement; and no sinner can perish who relies upon it, washes in it, and pleads it before God. It is indeed precious blood! It is invaluable!

Whenever you feel guilt on your conscience, fears rising in your mind, or a gloom come over your spirit; look to, meditate upon, make use of, the precious blood of Jesus. It made peace, it gives peace, and it secures peace. It cleanses, heals, and sanctifies; and we could not live happy one day without it. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin. To this alone we must look as the foundation of our hope, and ground of our peace. – James Smith, 1840

Dear dying Lamb! Thy precious blood
 Shall never lose its power,
Till all the ransom’d church of God
Be saved to sin no more.
