MORNING MANNA          11/1/19

November 1, 2019 By Pastor David Stone

“I must be about my Father’s business” – Luke 2:49

Jesus lived in perpetual awareness that his Father had a purpose for his being here, and that he must therefore be constantly about his Father’s business.

What is the driving motivation of your life? Whose “business” are you usually and primarily concerned with? Are you mostly working toward your own ends and purposes, toward the pleasure and admiration of your colleagues, toward the fulfillment of your friends’ expectations? Jesus determined that his Father’s business was his one driving, overruling interest.

You may excuse yourself as being too young or too new to the faith to make such an all-encompassing, single-minded resolution. But do you know how old Jesus was when he uttered these words? He was twelve years old!

It is never too soon to give your life to the service of the Lord, to dedicate your time and energy and labors to His glory and pleasure. Can you hear the urgency in Jesus’ words, at the age of twelve, to accomplish this purpose in His own life?

You, also, are here for the glory of God. Like Jesus, you must determine to pursue your Father’s purpose for you now, no matter what family members or coworkers or classmates might say or think. Sadly, Jesus is here having to remind his own parents, in a gentle and respectful way, of the God-centered nature of his calling and life.

Believer, you must be about your Father’s business! Do not let any personal ambition or conflicting counsel get in the way of that great purpose. – Baptist Bible Hour

MORNING MANNA.            10/31/19

“Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord “– Romans 12:11

The word “business” here refers to any responsibility or activity in which we might be engaged, not just career or financial obligations.
Paul exhorts us not to be slothful, or lazy, in anything that we do. Whether you are parenting, or studying, or working, or ministering you should do it to the very best of your ability. As Solomon so wisely advised, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
Sadly, sometimes we confuse our American rights with our Christian rights, and we begin to grumble and complain and get by with as little as we can. But Christians should be the most conscientious and virtuous employees, husbands and wives, or citizens, no matter where they are or what their circumstance.
Why? What is the motivation for such constancy and integrity, even in the midst of a lazy and selfish culture? Paul reminds us simply that we are “serving the Lord.”
No matter what responsibility or opportunity we may be given, we are ultimately to understand that it comes from God and that we are to perform the duty for His sake, for His pleasure. We are serving the Lord.
Do not settle for a mediocre effort and do not have an ungrateful disposition. As you change diapers, or give presentations, or sell products, or take tests — whatever you do, do it with all your might, in service to the Lord.- Baptist Bible Hour

MORNING MANNA          10/30/19

“….Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?….” – John 21:16

Sometime ago, after preaching from 1 Pet. 4:8 about love being the greatest characteristic, command, credential, and challenge, I left the service feeling like “What’s the use?”. That’s a feeling all pastors are familiar with. It was one of those days that every pastor has once in a while–and they are never fun.The entire message was about “The Greatest Thing”, but I couldn’t help but wonder if it was on anyone’s top ten list– if they truly attached any great importance to it. Surely it would be a reason to fear God if we didn’t. To treat lightly something God values so highly certainly is no minor matter–but it happens. Although just about everyone recognizes their responsibility to love, few acknowledge their failure to do so. Even when it is obvious that love is lacking they keep pretending, and singing “It is well with my soul”. Really?

If it suddenly came to their attention that their bank funds were depleted, or their health was diminished, or their spouse spoke of divorce, they would hit the panic button and give their full attention to the problem. But present evidence that there is a lack of love and they just yawn. It doesn’t so much as raise an eye-brow– let alone drive them to their knees in repentance. It’s almost as though they resent having someone even question their love. As you read this interaction of Christ with Peter you can almost sense the tension. There was no doubt great emotion on both sides. Peter had publicly denied the Lord, so there was need for a public confession.

We know Peter’s story, but what about you? What is your story? Has your actions, or lack thereof, raised a question about your affection for the Lord. How would you answer the Lord? Can we honestly say there is evidence of our love for Christ? Although we all fail at times we are never at liberty to ignore the matter. Our failure should drive us to our knees in prayer as we repent. Dear friend, this is a question we all must answer – “lovest thou me?” – HDS

“Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.” – Song of Sol. –  2:15

Just about everyone my age has heard the song, “Little Things Mean A Lot”. But that is more than a good song title. It is a tremendous truth. It is a great reminder of something too often forgotten. In every area of life it is attention to little things that make the difference between success and failure.

Horatius Bonar said, “A holy life is made up of a multitude of small things. It is the little things of the hour and not the great things of the age that fill up a life like that of the apostles Paul or John, or David Brainard, or Henry Martyn. Little words, not eloquent speeches or sermons; little deeds, not miracles or battles, or one great heroic effort or martyrdom, make up the true Christian life. It’s the little constant sunbeam, not the lightning, the waters of Siloam that go softly in their meek mission of refreshment, not ‘the waters of the rivers great and many’ rushing down in torrent, noise, and force, that are the true symbols of a holy life.”

As a warning, Bonar then wrote, ““little evils, little sins, little inconsistencies, little weaknesses, little foibles, little indulgences of self and of the flesh, little acts of indolence or indecision, or slovenliness or cowardice, little equivocations or aberrations from high integrity, little bits of covetousness, little indifferences to the feelings or wishes of others, little outbreaks of temper, or crossness, or selfishness or vanity.”

Whether for bad or good, little things make a big impact. If we are wise we will avoid the things that lead to failure and attend to the things that promote success. Don’t fret about your lack of ability. If you can’t do big things, do small things in a big way – it will make a huge difference! – HDS

MORNING MANNA         10/28/19

October 28, 2019 By Pastor David Stone

“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.”-1 John 4:16

Who shall describe it? What tongue or pen can set it forth? It is infinite, and what can finite mortals say? It is eternal, and how can we who are but of yesterday declare it? It is the present heaven of the saints, to know and believe the love that God hath to them. None can reveal it to us, or shed it abroad in our hearts, but the Holy Ghost. He can direct our hearts into the love of God, and into the patience of Jesus Christ. He is in office to show the saints the things of God, and enable them to believe and enjoy them.

Let us, beloved, daily pray that we may know and enjoy the love that God hath to us; it will be an antidote to all our miseries, a source of joy under all our sorrows. Our friends and frames may change, but the love of God is unchangeable. Our temporal prospects may be all blighted, but if we know and enjoy the love of God, we cannot be unhappy.

Who, or what shall separate us from the love of God? Jesus has told us that we shall never perish, neither shall any pluck us out of His hand. The love of our God is the source of our happiness, and the cause of our safety. Oh, to know and believe the love which God hath to us. God is love.

What shall I do my God to love?
 My loving God to praise?
The length, and breadth, and height to prove,
 And depth of sovereign grace?
        – James Smith, 1840
